Looking Back at a Decade Ago When TV First Peaked

19 April 2016 3:48 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

“Mad Men” didn’t premiere until 2007 — after the landmark year of 2006 — but what Don Draper said about the Kodak Carousel is eternally true: “Nostalgia: It’s delicate, but potent.”

Some context: A passing comment from a critic, who made an astute observation about “The Americans,” made me search out a piece I’d written a decade ago. That short exchange led me down another rabbit hole: I began to compile a list of TV shows that were on the air in 2006.

The more I dug, the more I dwelled on something I and many other critics knew 10 years ago, but today, this realization struck me again with some force: The year 2006 was, by any account, a banner year for television.

This is by no means a complete list of TV shows available on American television in 2006. It’s a a very partial list that leans heavily on many of my favorites of the mid-aughts era. »

Competition: Win teen-horror ‘Anguish’ on DVD

8 April 2016 6:40 AM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

To celebrate the home entertainment release of Anguish, which releases on DVD from Monday 11th April, we have a copy of the DVD up for grabs courtesy of Arrow Films.

From the producers of The Strangers comes an unnerving psychological thriller inspired by true events. When Tess (Ryan Simpkins) is diagnosed with a personality disorder, she suspects she is possessed by the spirit of a dead girl. With powerful performances, a skin-crawling atmosphere, and jump-out-of-your-seat scares, Anguish promises to be one of the year’s most terrifying and emotionally affecting thrillers.

To win a copy of Anguish on DVD, just answer the following question:

Which kids show did Anguish’s Ryan Simpkins provide a voice for? Was it:

a) Gravity Falls

b) Wonder Showzen

c) Robot Chicken

‘Pee-wee’s Big Holiday’ Director John Lee on Being the Right Kind of Monster [SXSW Interview]

23 March 2016 8:00 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Director John Lee seems, at first, to be an odd fit for a Pee-wee Herman movie. With writing and directing credits that include Wonder Showzen, Inside Amy Schumer, Broad City, and The Heart, She Holler, Lee seems to exist in a darker, more pointed universe than the colorful, silly world of Paul Reubens‘ iconic character. But as […]

Review: 'Pee-Wee's Big Holiday' is a gentle delight, both new and familiar

22 March 2016 12:30 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

A quick note: my computer finally gave up the ghost last week, and I’ve spent the past five or so days scrambling to get back up and running. I’ve never gone this long without posting at HitFix, not since we began the site, and it’s a disconcerting feeling to just watch pop culture flow by without having the tools be part of the conversation. It’s amazing how ingrained it is at this point, and even when I’m working as hard as I can, I still always feel like there’s more that I’d like to write and publish than I’m able to actually accomplish. Case in point: I was hoping to publish this review last Friday night after my sons joined me and my girlfriend for an evening built around the Netflix premiere of Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday, directed by John Lee. Pee-wee Herman, the delightfully chirpy man-child that he is, hatches a plan for a grand adventure in the first full-length trailer for Netflix’s feature, Pee-wee’s Big Holiday.

Having portrayed the character for more than 30 years, Paul Reubens is practically synonymous with the childlike Pee-wee, and today’s snippet only showcases more of that signature, innocent charm. The remainder of the cast will be rounded out by Joe Manganiello (Magic Mike Xxl), Alia Shawkat and Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Stephanie Beatriz.

As the title suggests, Big Holiday will see Reubens’ character finally journey beyond the idyllic borders of Fairville. Buoyed by his newfound confidence – thanks in no part to Manganiello’s devilishly handsome stranger – he sets out on an impromptu road trip, crossing paths with angry bank robbers along the way.

In Pee-wee's Big Holiday, a fateful meeting with a mysterious stranger inspires Pee-wee Herman to take his first-ever holiday in this epic story of friendship and destiny.
