Marion Cotillard and Quentin Tarantino to receive Palm Springs honours

French actress Marion Cotillard and director Quentin Tarantino are to receive top honours at the Palm Springs Film Festival in California. Cotillard, who was previously feted at the event in 2008 for her role in La Vie En Rose, will take home the best actress prize for her performance in movie-musical Nine. 'Nine'

30 December 2009 9:05 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Nine begins with hips swaying in silhouette as the overture introduces the lovely women who both distract and drive master director Guido Contini (master actor Daniel Day-Lewis). From his sultry sexpot mistress Carla (Penelope Cruz) to his prim, Audrey-Hepburn-esque wife Luisa (Marion Cotillard), the bevy of beauties enter a scaffolding-filled set in Guido's mind. The director is struggling with his next project, but his lack of inspiration is suffered by the movie itself as well. Nine may be a frothy, flashy film filled with Hollywood's top talent, but it never quite achieves the heights its pedigree promises.

The film's biggest asset is clearly its cast. Day-Lewis, Cruz, and Cotillard would be enough for any normal film, but Nine greedily adds Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench, Kate Hudson, Stacy Ferguson, and the grand donna of Italian cinema, Sophia Loren. It's an embarrassment of riches that would make a more modest film blush, »

Cotillard And Tarantino To Receive Palm Springs Honours

30 December 2009 8:16 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

French actress Marion Cotillard and director Quentin Tarantino are to receive the top honours at the upcoming Palm Springs Film Festival in California.

Cotillard, who was previously feted at the event in 2008 for her role in La Vie En Rose, will take home the best actress prize for her performance in movie-musical Nine.

Tarantino will be handed the Sonny Bono Visionary Award, named after the festival's founder, for his contribution to film.

A statement from festival chairman Harold Matzner reads, "Following a distinguished career in French cinema, Marion Cotillard has firmly established herself as a major actress in American films. Her performance in Rob Marshall’s Nine is nothing short of breathtaking.

"Quentin Tarantino is one of the most gifted, iconoclastic film-makers of his generation, and with Inglourious Basterds, he’s created a hugely entertaining, revisionist take on history as it might have been.”

British actress Dame Helen Mirren is slated to pick up the coveted Career Achievement Award at the festival's gala prizegiving on 5 January, at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

The festival, which will run from 5-18 January, was set up in 1990 by the city's then-Mayor, singer-songwriter Sonny Bono, who turned to politics before his death in 1998. »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Seven

29 December 2009 7:16 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Mother and Child

Opens: 2010

Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington

Director: Rodrigo Garcia

Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.

Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.

The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not »

Trailer: U.S. version of Christopher Nolan’s ‘Inception’ lands online

29 December 2009 4:15 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Warner Bros. has released the second trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Inception. Yesterday, the studio yanked the French trailer and, we’re not sure if they had planned to release the U.S. this soon, but here it is for your eyeballs.

The same thing happened in November when the Russian trailer for Angelina Jolie’s Salt landed online. The trailer was quickly squashed and replaced with a U.S. version because we just can’t handle foreign shite.

Inception revolved around a “CEO-type” who who becomes involved in a blackmailing scandal. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page (Juno), Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai), the lovely Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose), Joseph Gordon Levitt ((500) Days of Summer), Tom Hardy (RocknRolla), Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins), Tom Berenger and Michael Caine.

Inception hits theaters on July 16.

London -- Celebrating its two-year anniversary with an anticipated 82 million downloads in December, the BBC iPlayer is extending the flexibility of how U.K. viewers view BBC fare, the pubcaster's director of future media and technology Eric Huggers said Wednesday.

Speaking as the pubcaster published new data on iPlayer usage patterns, Huggers revealed that the platform averages over five million unique users a week and experiences viewing surges on Saturday and Sunday mornings as viewers catch-up on TV from the comfort of their own bed.

The iPlayer is now available on more than 20 different devices, including PCs, Macs, mobile phones, PS3 and other gaming platforms, with Mac and PS3 users preferring comedy shows such as alternative comedy panel show "Mock The Week," while PC and Virgin Media users appear to prefer drama, with long-running BBC soap "EastEnders" and crime thriller "Waking The Dead" proving to be more popular.

Movie Review: Crazy Heart (2009)

Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart

Photo: Fox Searchlight Pictures Scott Cooper's Crazy Heart marks the helmer's feature film directorial debut. Having also penned the screenplay, an adaptation of the Thomas Cobb novel, there are obvious decisions that were made limiting the risk of this story of an alcoholic country music singer. In fact, Crazy Heart could have gone down much darker and less cliched paths had it dared and at the same time told greater truths about its subject matter. Instead Cooper plays it safe and relies on a powerful lead performance from Jeff Bridges and worthy supporting efforts from Maggie Gyllenhaal, Colin Farrell, Paul Herman and Robert Duvall to make it all work.

Already described by most as The Wrestler for 2009, this is an apt comparison in terms of framework, but the execution isn't as closely comparable. Bridges plays Bad Blake, a country singer that once toured and »

Golden Globes fashion competition heats up: who'll win best-dressed?

Who cares who wins or loses? It's how you look on the Golden Globes red carpet on Jan. 17 that counts.

And -- given the slate of stylish film actresses of all ages -- the 2010 Golden Globes promise to be a full-on fashion feast.

The best and best supporting actress in film nominations, announced early this morning at the Beverly Hilton, included the fave fashion plates of many an international designer: Emily Blunt, Julia Roberts, Sandra (a double nominee) Bullock, Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Julia Roberts and Julianne Moore.

Rounding out the list, Gaboury Sidibe and Monique for "Precious" will both show how fuller-figured ladies can work a red carpet.

We've even got seasoned awards dressers Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep (again, a double nominee) to spice up the arrivals.

Golden Globe noms announced

Complete list of film and TV nominees

"I'm pumped!" James Cameron said before hopping a plane from New York to Los Angeles, where he hoped to celebrate with the cast and crew of best drama nominee "Avatar" at a screening Tuesday night. "It's been a 4 1/2-year journey, and this is not typically the kind of film that critics love, it being a genre movie and being seen as a big commercial movie." Cameron, also nominated for a best director Golden Globe, was pleased the movie also got some love in the music category. "I think this is James Horner's best score to date," he says. But he says he is sad his actors got short shrift. "Maybe there's a sense that acting for performance capture isn't the same as acting for a lens, which is going to take an education. I think that will eventually go away. »

British film rivals in race to tell Maria Callas's love story

Penélope Cruz and Anne Hathaway may be rivals in two biopics

Two British screenplays are competing for the chance to be the first to tell the compelling life story of the opera star Maria Callas on film.

This summer, as guests attending the Cannes film festival gathered for cocktails on the terrace of the exclusive Martinez hotel to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Pier Paolo Pasolini's acclaimed film Medea, with Callas in the non-singing title role, the soprano's close associations with glamour and the cinema were never more evident.

On display at the hotel was a selection of jewellery from Callas's private collection, including her white diamond "La Traviata" necklace, showcased alongside unseen photographs of the singer with stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly. But what the guests at the Martinez did not know was that, just along the Croisette, producers were busy with »

A few years ago, the Hollywood biopic finally seemed to be coming of age. It was the fall of 2004 -- a season that gave us not one but two of the most thrilling biographical dramas ever made, the jumpin' and impassioned Ray and the bold and brilliant Kinsey. (No, that's not Kinsey at left -- it's Woody Harrelson as Larry Flynt -- though it's probably a ménage he would have approved of.) The fact that these two movies came out within one month of each other was a coincidence, yet I marveled, at the time, at what they had in »
