So, how do we make movie.
Step 1: Start from an idea Step 2: ... No point going to this step and
onwards because that's where the thinking part ends in this case.
The idea was good, different and definitely unconventional. The
execution was flawed and suffered from lack of thinking and complete
inability to knit a story around that idea.
Let's start with lack of identity in and relevance of characters: Sam -
couldn't figure out why is this character in the movie. He could not
resolve anything, could not set an example of any kind. If he is trying
to be Hugh Hefner, so be it - don't mix or dilute that character with
stints of love for his late wife.
Kamaljit - Such a fine actress - totally wasted because of the same
issue as above.
Maya - why is she unhappy? is she very fond of cleaning and Rishi very
fond of throwing trash around; she wants to do or achieve something in
life that Rishi is not letting her to? is she in love with some other
guy before marriage (like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam) and she is stuck
here? Not explained at all in the movie.
Dev - Why is he so irritated all the time? What does he want in life?
Why does he feel bad when Rhea kind of shows her generosity when she
declines the promotion but he makes sarcastic remarks when he wins some
small time cup in the beginning of the movie but she is unable to make
it because of her interview? His love towards Maya all these years
(even though he was married) and his waiting or letting the trains go,
keeping a close watch at her etc. comes as a big surprise to the
audience as well (at least tell us about it so that we can at least
appreciate and understand your character and try to defend you..
because ultimately it is going to be your story)? How was he wronged to
an extent that he had to leave his son, his mother because of some Maya
after more than 5 years of marriage? What led him to pull the chain in
the end when he didn't even know that Maya wasn't living with Rishi
anymore? Totally confused guy with no sense of life.
Rhea - Understood. She is a career oriented woman and work comes first
and family second. That's a personal choice and I appreciate that. She
is very successful and took the magazine to No. 1 spot in less than 2
years (she joined when her son was 5yrs old). But her way of dealing
with personal situations is very immature - don't believe she played
any role in dealing with people issues to make the magazine such a big
success. And what was the meaning of - Now we are No. 1 and now let us
go back to our husbands and family. Are you saying that leaving
husbands and family was part of the project plan to bring the magazine
to No. 1 spot and that now there will not be any effort to keep it that
way. Trust me, fight for sustenance at No. 1 spot is far more hard than
achieving it.
Rishi - The most reasonable character in the movie. Although we don't
know what is going on in his mind and how he wants to resolve things
than just being totally committed and in love with Maya..but still.. we
can grant him some room.
Arjun - A cute little angel with Chicken Little looks. He could have
played a significant role in the movie to turnaround things and
situations. But he is a kid...he gets to suffer in the end...so let us
leave him for now.
In short - if we have so many weak characterizations playing the lead
role in the movie, howsoever good the concept is - it is bound to fail.
The only good thing in the movie (that is why 1 star) 1- Music. Great
Music!! But the songs, lyrics and the situations were totally out of
sync with the storyline.
Mr. Johar - I have been a big fan of yours and I am sure you know this
but I don't know why you missed it this time - There's a lot that goes
into a movie to make it watchable than designer dresses, new york
streets, and the most expensive and talented set of actors in Indian
film industry. Please take charge of the movie and understand your
responsibility and accountability to get the best out of them.
This is not a Karan Johar movie - this is a movie that happens to have
Karan Johar's name as the director.

This movie was excellent. It was a truly adult theme and very
realistically made. This genre of movies has not been explored in India
because of social taboos but it happens all the time. People fall in &
out of love, they may never be 'in-love' with their spouse but think
they do and keep looking for a deep romantic love. This movie explored
all this with tenderness & dignity as the dominant themes. What's more,
it was not primitive in it's treatment of the story i.e. the previous
tone for movies would have been to kill these people who fall in love
outside of marriage or suddenly turn their spouses into abusing
monsters - to justify the people falling in love - who die and bless
the new couple in the dying scene to be together! The movie had a
realistic and logical conclusion. The only thing is that it could have
been shorter. Nevertheless, it was not boring. All the actors have
given it their best shot.

If you enjoy watching Bollywood movies about relationships especially
real life marital relations, I think this movie is worth watching. At
any rate, Karan Johar had courage to make this film and made it
intensely serious as well as adding good comedy at the right moments.
The songs are enjoyable and the performances by all the main actors
were superb. It takes courage to take on the topic of infidelity and
Johar does so brilliantly. We can relate to the characters on some
level. It was wonderful to see the father-son team of Amitabh and
Abishek team up in their mostly comic scenes. Shah Rukh Khan does
intensity very well. Even though many Bollywood movies love to play
with the idea that the couple that starts out in a movie isn't the
couple that will end up together at the end, most Bollywood movies give
it a fairy tale type ending where everybody is happy with the end
result. But KANK does good by showing that there are repercussions when
following your heart, and it doesn't feel good when we break another
person's heart. This movie really explores the emotions and dilemmas
that are involved in extra-marital affairs which I think is important
for people to explore. Keep making these great films Karan!

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna SO WONDERFUL yes it is You Like it or Not this
is the truth you just not open minded or not mature enough to accept
that fact i read most of the comments and most who give it bad rate are
Indian and one of them named his comment its not an Indian movie well
even if its not so what? its a great movie even if it from HELL! Drama
and Romance movies all Depends on Actors only because the special
effect almost not exist in it not like the action or horror movies and
all the characters in this movie did a wonderful job try to understand
it and feel it and then judge what if your marriage is failed? and you
did all what you can do to save it and you couldn't? man or woman when
we will wake up and listen
and now what is every character mean in this movie?
first of all
-Shahrukh khan: Dev he made his role 100% perfect i can tell because i
used to be normal person and then i got a lack of kind like what he got
in the movie but not in my leg anyway my point is i become like him in
the movie i just become another person than the person i used to be and
i changed my life style because of it and i know that feeling when you
have to be with some one and you love some one else and thats hurt more
than you can imagine!! so i can feel every move Shahrukh khan did in
this movie because its simply happen to me! and if i have right i will
give Shahrukh khan prize as a BEST Actor EVER on this role
-Rani: Maya WOW i know that Rani great actress already before i watch
Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna i am sure from that since i watched Black and
even before that and no one else can do her role in this movie she is
so talented and her face and her eyes can tell what she can't say and
back to her role in the movie she was the one who want to be in love
with some one she really love and want to be happy and live her simple
life but in the same time she was afraid from the guilt because she is
married and married woman shouldn't cheat on her husband so she is in
pain between the happiness of love and the fact of marriage lot of
people didn't like Rani in that role because they don't accept cheat in
marriage but did anyone from the people who hate that movie put
him/herself in her spot?? think again about it please and stop to rush
that she is cheater she don't deserve anything because this is immature
way to solve it
-Abhishek Bachchan: Rishi he did his role so good his acting was so
real and full of life which make you understand his character so well
he also made me laugh a lot in the movie his passion and way of life
his life style itself he is the opposite person for his wife so this
marriage never meant to be you tell me how 2 people have nothing in
common not even 1 thing can live together sure you watched the movie so
you don't want me to explain Maya and Rishi characters to you so Just
Tell Me
-Preity Zinta: Rhea Preity was not one of my favorite in the movie
actually But! she did her role just how it must be and she deserve all
the respect for her wonderful work she made Rhea as it must be the way
of the woman who love herself and her success and want to prove to
herself that she is the best and she don't need anyone she love to feel
that way even if she deny to accept that fact she is the one who make
her husband far for her not only her husband even her son she didn't
even know what music her son like to play etc.. she busy in her job and
her non stop party life and noway for person like Dev to live with
woman like Rhea
-Amitabh Bachchan: Sam Sam is the person who understand the people and
understand the life and fight with it for beat all his pains and
sadness he is not just an old man who think himself still young to run
after Young Ladies Sam Character so much deeper than that in the movie
and only mature people will understand Sam Character i can't explain
more really
-Kiron Kher: Kamaljit Kamaljit is just a mom who love her son a lot and
love her family so much and as most of the mothers specially the east
mothers who want see her son with his wife in their home and if there
any problem they have to fix it no matter what so the family didn't
ruin but is that work really? i don't think so love win no matter what
and this is the truth and what happen in real life even if lovers
didn't marry each others they alway be in the your heart and your mind
and the only reason for your problems with the person you with husband
or wife
So Simply this Movie show you a true story can happen to you or me or
anyone else any where and any time so Please use your mind before you
judge thats beside the songs in this movies so beautiful specially
Tumhi Dekho Naa and Mitwa

Will all the other comment writers stop looking at Hindi movies as
escapism from their current foreign surroundings and concentrate on the
storyteller instead.
Why does everyone in a Hindi movie have to be prudish, why do Indian
audiences around the world have to comment on the actions of every
actor. why does everything have to be black and white. it is the shades
of Gray that make our personalities colorful.
Just when someone tries to make in your face cinema that all goes awry.
why is it so hard to accept that love does come without warning like
death - as rightly said by the character of amitabh.
yes Shahrukh is surely over the top... but isn't that the reason why he
is where he is today. no character has to justify their actions but for
the fact that they are driven by their emotions... which is pretty
common among common human beings.
full marks to karan for bringing this out and kudos to all in the movie
for great performances.
the dialogues are splendidly thought out.
One thing i wonder--- why new york... maybe the same reason why Lamhe
was set in London for the radical part of the story ! but the fact is
that such stories may happen anywhere from Mumbai to Delhi to
Bhutan's... just that we prefer to close our eyes to the same.
watch the movie with rationality... think of the characters as human
and yes... you will find 3 hours worth it.

I loved this movie. Its just a great movie some people criticized it
because they don't have a sense of humor and like movies where
everybody has to fight and kill and more of that nonsense but this
movie really pushes the imagination. You really start to love the
characters and don't know who's side you should pick. Because they all
have good and bad things about them. You should think that it is a
predictable movie but you get surprised every time. OK the ending
leaves you a bit cold but it's better then other movies that people
like because of there mindless violence and a ending where every one
cries. This is just a alternative movie for people who like comedy with
romance and drama. So don't say this is a bad movie just say that it
isn't your taste.

Karan Johar is an entertainer and keeps his eyes on the money too. He
doesn't provide answers but gets his audience to ask questions. One is
free to do anything about this movie. Be entertained or be aroused or
simply be critical. While the home audience may be mixed in their
appraisal, is it any wonder why the ROI from overseas locations justify
Karan's venture? I believe that the theme is balance. Whether its
career or relationships. There is reference to Spiritual touches (as
the stroll in the church), Family (obviously), Friendships (evidently),
Financial intelligence (leveraging of time and money and how it effects
one choices), Fitness levels (mental, physical and emotional)and how
one views Fun. Does it occur to anyone that the child is left alone to
be in dilemma of being forced to play soccer when he wants to play
violin? This realization comes too late. Everone returns to the basics
finally. Foundation is essential.

I don't understand how anyone could not love this film. What happens
between Dev and Maya happens more frequently than you can imagine. I'm
putting this one up there with "Doctor Zhivago", my God! What an epic!
KANK was a moving, quiet yet powerful film.
Abhishek was wonderful as Rishi. I really liked how Rishi, after being
cuckold, is able to come to honest, realistic terms with what happened
and man enough to tell Maya. I haven't seen many Amitabh films (none of
his earlier films) but I must say I see what all the hype is. This role
was so very different from anything I've seen him take on (in that the
character appeared to be very frivolous), and he is still superb. I
didn't detect a bit of discomfort or doubtfulness in his performance.
Unlike Rani's dominatrix scene. I can't decide if she was slightly
uncomfortable or if she was too darn perfect because what she was doing
was totally out of her character's nature. Maybe it ran just a little
too long. Overall Rani's performance was wonderful too. How can you not
love her? She's so darn easy on the eyes. Rhea's (Preity Zinta) could
have used a little more building. I didn't feel as much sympathy for
her as I thought I would. Don't get me wrong, when she smacks Dev
across the face for being unfaithful I cheered with both fist in the
air. I guess if Mr. Johar made us feel too sorry for Rhea we would not
have been so pleased when Dev & Maya finally get together. I've saved
the best for last. What can I say about Mr. Khan that hasn't already
been said? Wonderful, superb, marvelous, excellent, incredible, simply
the best! Can ya tell I'm a huge ShahRukh fan? Dev, Dev, Dev a
frustrated jock trying to find a little happiness. I ain't mad at ya!
Life's too short and precious to spend it miserable. Always take a
chance on true love if you're lucky enough to find it.

I really don't understand how people can have so much hate against this
movie. No offence, but i think some people over analyse movies way too
much and try so hard to find meaning and concepts in the movie which
aren't there because they weren't intended. Some people don't seem to
'understand' how Dev falls in love with Maya (vice-versa) or how they
could salvage such love for that prolonged period of time after they
separate from their spouses, and I think that's one of the stupidest
thinks to not 'understand' if you are an avid Bollywood movie fan.
There have been countless examples of such prolonged and unexplainable
love in Bollywood movies in the past and it seems quite unfair to judge
this movie badly for that aspect alone. I don't know if it seems highly
improbable to the audiences around the world of how they continually
keep on meeting each other, but it's another common example found in
Bollywood films. Some scenes (I agree) could have been perceived better
but the music (and accompanying scenes) I feel was beautifully sweet.
The point is, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna was quite a beautifully shot story
of adorable love, and portrays challenges with marriage and love
(although it has been done before and sometimes better) and with fair
acting on some and excellent for others (I was highly impressed with
Abishek's performance ^^). Appreciate it for what it was and (im saying
the stupidly obvious but..) if you've found such unforgivable flaws
then try and think how you'd fix them.

Just when someone tries to make in your face cinema that all goes awry. why is it so hard to accept that love does come without warning like death - as rightly said by the character of amitabh.
yes Shahrukh is surely over the top... but isn't that the reason why he is where he is today. no character has to justify their actions but for the fact that they are driven by their emotions... which is pretty common among common human beings.
full marks to karan for bringing this out and kudos to all in the movie for great performances.
the dialogues are splendidly thought out.
One thing i wonder--- why new york... maybe the same reason why Lamhe was set in London for the radical part of the story ! but the fact is that such stories may happen anywhere from Mumbai to Delhi to Bhutan's... just that we prefer to close our eyes to the same.
watch the movie with rationality... think of the characters as human and yes... you will find 3 hours worth it.

I loved this movie. Its just a great movie some people criticized it because they don't have a sense of humor and like movies where everybody has to fight and kill and more of that nonsense but this movie really pushes the imagination. You really start to love the characters and don't know who's side you should pick. Because they all have good and bad things about them. You should think that it is a predictable movie but you get surprised every time. OK the ending leaves you a bit cold but it's better then other movies that people like because of there mindless violence and a ending where every one cries. This is just a alternative movie for people who like comedy with romance and drama. So don't say this is a bad movie just say that it isn't your taste.

A strategy of entertainment biz, 15 December 2006

Karan Johar is an entertainer and keeps his eyes on the money too. He doesn't provide answers but gets his audience to ask questions. One is free to do anything about this movie. Be entertained or be aroused or simply be critical. While the home audience may be mixed in their appraisal, is it any wonder why the ROI from overseas locations justify Karan's venture? I believe that the theme is balance. Whether its career or relationships. There is reference to Spiritual touches (as the stroll in the church), Family (obviously), Friendships (evidently), Financial intelligence (leveraging of time and money and how it effects one choices), Fitness levels (mental, physical and emotional)and how one views Fun. Does it occur to anyone that the child is left alone to be in dilemma of being forced to play soccer when he wants to play violin? This realization comes too late. Everone returns to the basics finally. Foundation is essential.

I don't understand how anyone could not love this film. What happens between Dev and Maya happens more frequently than you can imagine. I'm putting this one up there with "Doctor Zhivago", my God! What an epic! KANK was a moving, quiet yet powerful film.
Abhishek was wonderful as Rishi. I really liked how Rishi, after being cuckold, is able to come to honest, realistic terms with what happened and man enough to tell Maya. I haven't seen many Amitabh films (none of his earlier films) but I must say I see what all the hype is. This role was so very different from anything I've seen him take on (in that the character appeared to be very frivolous), and he is still superb. I didn't detect a bit of discomfort or doubtfulness in his performance. Unlike Rani's dominatrix scene. I can't decide if she was slightly uncomfortable or if she was too darn perfect because what she was doing was totally out of her character's nature. Maybe it ran just a little too long. Overall Rani's performance was wonderful too. How can you not love her? She's so darn easy on the eyes. Rhea's (Preity Zinta) could have used a little more building. I didn't feel as much sympathy for her as I thought I would. Don't get me wrong, when she smacks Dev across the face for being unfaithful I cheered with both fist in the air. I guess if Mr. Johar made us feel too sorry for Rhea we would not have been so pleased when Dev & Maya finally get together. I've saved the best for last. What can I say about Mr. Khan that hasn't already been said? Wonderful, superb, marvelous, excellent, incredible, simply the best! Can ya tell I'm a huge ShahRukh fan? Dev, Dev, Dev a frustrated jock trying to find a little happiness. I ain't mad at ya! Life's too short and precious to spend it miserable. Always take a chance on true love if you're lucky enough to find it.

an adorable relationship that was beautifully shot .., 5 November 2006

I really don't understand how people can have so much hate against this movie. No offence, but i think some people over analyse movies way too much and try so hard to find meaning and concepts in the movie which aren't there because they weren't intended. Some people don't seem to 'understand' how Dev falls in love with Maya (vice-versa) or how they could salvage such love for that prolonged period of time after they separate from their spouses, and I think that's one of the stupidest thinks to not 'understand' if you are an avid Bollywood movie fan. There have been countless examples of such prolonged and unexplainable love in Bollywood movies in the past and it seems quite unfair to judge this movie badly for that aspect alone. I don't know if it seems highly improbable to the audiences around the world of how they continually keep on meeting each other, but it's another common example found in Bollywood films. Some scenes (I agree) could have been perceived better but the music (and accompanying scenes) I feel was beautifully sweet. The point is, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna was quite a beautifully shot story of adorable love, and portrays challenges with marriage and love (although it has been done before and sometimes better) and with fair acting on some and excellent for others (I was highly impressed with Abishek's performance ^^). Appreciate it for what it was and (im saying the stupidly obvious but..) if you've found such unforgivable flaws then try and think how you'd fix them.
