Sunshine Cleaning was one of the most talked-about releases of this year's Sundance, given that it starred cuter-than-cute Amy Adams and fellow star-on-the-rise Emily Blunt as sisters who specialize in a more than unusual cleaning service. It's taken a while for the movie to get set up with release, but now the first trailer is available online, first posted at Movie-List.com. The movie has "Sundance" written all over it, mostly given the presence of Alan Arkin, who seems to be going Little Miss Sunshine with a role as a cranky old man who bonds with a little kid. But Blunt and Adams are fun to watch, and seem to have the ability to make the movie more than just a standard feel-good indie comedy. The movie doesn't have a release date yet, but check out the trailer below and decide how interested you'll be when it gets one.

The American independent film movement has been dominated over the past half-decade by slightly quirkier, more ramshackle versions of what's on broadcast television any given night of the week. Festivals and art-houses are jammed with style-poor movies about dysfunctional families and vaguely disaffected youngsters, all of whom seem to have strange hobbies, horrible fashion sense, and a knack for talking only when they have something nonsensical and/or pithy to say. So given the competition, it's easy to cling fast to a film like Lance Hammer's debut feature Ballast, which is all about atmospheric mood-spinning, and clearly aspires to a higher form of art. But though Ballast has more in common with the austere foreign cinema of the Dardennes brothers than it does with Juno, Little Miss Sunshine, or Napoleon Dynamite, Hammer's small-town wallow—in which characters suffer in stillness and silence—is itself a kind of art-house cliché.

Greg Kinnear came to stardom relatively late in life, after a series of lead-up careers, first as an entertainment reporter, then as a talk-show host on The Best Of The Worst, Later With Greg Kinnear, and Talk Soup. His cinema breakthroughs came in the mid-'90s, when he co-starred opposite Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond in the remake of Billy Wilder's Sabrina, earned an Oscar nomination for his role in As Good As It Gets, and stole scenes as the smug Captain Amazing in Mystery Men. His star has risen steadily since, with key roles in the breakout audience favorite Little Miss Sunshine and the critically praised The Matador, though he often ends up as easily the best thing in less-winning movies like Fast Food Nation, Invincible, and Auto Focus. Kinnear currently has two movies in theaters: In the comedy Ghost Town, he co-stars as a ghost trying to get the.

MoviesOnline sat down with Ricky Gervais (“Extras,” “The Office”) and Greg Kinnear (“Little Miss Sunshine”) at the Toronto International Film Festival to talk about their new movie, “Ghost Town,” directed by David Koepp. In the comedy "Ghost Town," Bertram Pincus (Gervais) is a man whose people skills leave much to be desired. When Pincus dies unexpectedly, but is miraculously revived after seven minutes, he wakes up to discover that he now has the annoying ability to see ghosts. Even worse, they all want something from him, particularly Fran...

Even without being in theaters, The Wrestler was the biggest movie of the weekend. The Darren Aronofsky drama about a down on his luck professional wrestler played by Mickey Rourke won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday and then on Sunday, it became the first major purchase at the Toronto Film Festival.
Anne Thompson of Variety reports in her blog that Fox Searchlight has picked up the film, and that couldn't be better news for The Wrestler. We've seen what Searchlight has been able to do with movies that have Oscar aspirations; in the past two years, Little Miss Sunshine and Juno grabbed eight Academy Award nominations and three wins, and the films made a combined $200 million. In that same time frame, they also had wins and eight total nominations for The Savages, The Last King of Scotland, Notes on a Scandal, and Once.

Ok, here's the deal: It's Labor Day. Hollywood, for whatever reason, has this misconception that people won't go see movies over the last pre-Thanksgiving holiday weekend. And I can't believe that, in 2008, all those multi-billion dollar multinationals still hold on to this business model. Here's a little secret, you to me: Some of the movies that do best on Labor Day weekend are movies from earlier in the summer. Why? The movies that come out on Labor Day aren't Usda grade A beef.
Last year, there were actually a couple new releases that did pretty well (Halloween, Balls of Fury), but in 2006, the carryover Invincible beat all newcomers, and Little Miss Sunshine and Pirates 2 saw significant increases in their audiences. The year before, The 40-Year-Old Virgin also sold more tickets over Labor Day than it had in the previous weekend, ditto March of the Penguins. In 2004, Hero became the

Steve Carell has a lot to celebrate as he sees in his 46th birthday this week. From his early career as a regular on The Daily Show, he's become a comedy stalwart and unofficial member of Hollywood's uber-cool Frat Pack. Not content to impress critics as David Brent's stateside alter ego in the Us version of The Office, he found big screen success with The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Little Miss Sunshine (The less said about Evan Almighty the better!). As latest flick Get Smart opens in cinemas this week, we deliver a few fascinating facts about the postman-turned-comedy star. 1. Steve is the youngest of four brothers born in Acton, Massachusetts to a psychiatric nurse mum and electrical engineer dad. 2. Steve's paternal grandfather was Italian and his dad was born with the surname Caroselli, which he changed to Carell before (more)

Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman is making his directorial debut with Jack Goes Boating, a big screen adaptation of an off-Broadway play that debuted last year. Before anyone stops reading after hearing that it's a play, you've got to hear the concept. The play is a quirky romantic drama about two stoners in love, one a limo driver who "embarks on such quixotic missions as cooking and swimming lessons", and the other another lovable loser. Hoffman actually stars in the play (as seen above) and has never directed a film before, although he has directed plays. The film will be produced by Big Beach Films (of Little Miss Sunshine) and Hoffman's Cooper's Town Productions, although there is no start date just yet. The New York Times gave a very positive review to the play last year, saying "you're likely to leave the theater with a contact high from the ripe pleasure

Kelly Ripa and Christie Brinkley caught Jonas Brothers fever Saturday when the heartthrob boy band performed in East Hampton, N.Y., at a concert benefiting the tony Ross School. "Kelly and her kids are huge fans," says a source who attended the $1,500-a-ticket fundraiser. And how. When the event planner was looking for someone to help raffle off two guitars to raise money for the prestigious school, Ripa immediately stepped forward. "Kelly said, 'I'll do anything for the Jonas Brothers! They have made my kids so happy! And I just want to be onstage to see what it's like to be a rock star!

Hamlet 2 is one of the funnier films you probably haven't heard of unless you track the movie sales at Sundance. Earlier this year it almost broke the Little Miss Sunshine record of 10.5 million when it sold for 10 million to Focus Features. The New York Times says ""It made sure to take shots at Christians, gays, Latinos, Jews, the American Civil Liberties Union and Elisabeth Shue, one of its lead actres ...

Ben Kingsley and Josh Peck wheel around the marijuana cart posing as a snow cone cart
Photo: Sony Pictures Classics Fueled by not much more than online fanboy joy over a film they mildly connect with, The Wackness is impressive only as a piece of teenage "where do I fit in the world?" questioning, but outside of that it isn't all that interesting. This film just tends to sit there and go through the motions as each and every turn in the plot is foreshadowed prior to anything ever taking place. None of it is a mystery as you follow the slovenly open-mouthed protagonist on his daily jaunts selling weed while the world he inhabits is crumbling all around him. Josh Peck isn't a newcomer to films although it may seem that way considering he has never broken out and astounded audiences. Starring as Luke Shapiro, he has just graduated

Not much change in my weekend predictions from Monday’s early preview. Virtually everyone I talk to has Steve Carell’s Get Smart (Warner Bros) at $35M or so. If the number holds, it will be an excellent start, becoming Carell’s all-time best live action opening as an above-the-title star. His best to-date is last summer’s Evan Alimighty, which managed just $31.2M. The reviews are coming in with a positive lean. As of Thursday morning, Rotten Tomatoes has the late 60’s TV adaptation at 53% Fresh and MetaCritic is scoring at 52% Positive. With a Pg-13 rating, the movie has a chance to play to Baby Boomers, who are fans of the original show, Generation X’ers, who saw the reruns, and teens that know Carell from The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Little Miss Sunshine. I am calling for $33M-$36M for Get Smart with a possible upside surprise in the cards.

Pint-sized Abigail Breslin swears that her Oscar nod and whirlwind career have barely changed her life, Vanity Fair reports. She will admit that her best supporting actress nomination for Little Miss Sunshine “was really exciting," but so are the 12-year-old's veterinary dreams. “I got to ride a sea lion, and I got to play with pelicans and lizards" in her latest film, she said. "It was awesome."

While Steve Carell and Mike Myers face off at the multiplexes this week, indie theaters fight back with a wide range of quirk, including a meter maid romance, a doc on balloon animals and a horror flick about killer hair extensions.
"Brick Lane" in London's East End might be just a relatively short jaunt down the M1 from Salford, but it's still a million miles (and a decade) away from the careful multi-ethnic empathy of another film that dealt with south Asian refugees in England, the 1970s-set "East is East." This story follows 18-year-old Nazneem (Tannishtha Chatterjee), who steps off a plane from Bangladesh and into an arranged marriage with middle-aged Chanu (Satish Kaushik). Bored and lonely, she's forced to question her beliefs when the charismatic and secular Karim (Christopher Simpson) knocks on her door. Director Sarah Gavron landed herself a Bafta nomination for this

Little Miss Sunshine star Abigail Breslin refuses to watch medical TV shows - because she is a hypochondriac.
The child star admits the programmes make her fear she will be struck down by an illness.
She tells New York gossip column Page Six, "I'm not allowed to watch medical TV shows. (Once), I was worried that I was going to step on glass, so I wore shoes even in bed... I thought I had bird flu, so for a long time I wouldn't go near any birds."
And Breslin, who recently filmed Nim's Island in Australia, feared she had been bitten by a poisonous spider, so she made sure she was pals with the set's first aider.
She adds, "My best friend on the set was the medic."

Little Miss Sunshine star Abigail Breslin gave Australia's animals something to smile about - thanks to a swear box on the set of her new family film Nim's Island.
Appalled by Scottish actor Gerard Butler's cursing, the child star insisted that all cast and crew pay $2 (GBP1) every time they swore in front of her - and she gave the cash to animal charity the Royal Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals (Rspca).
She says, "All together, with everybody contributing to the swear jar, we made $150 and we donated it to the Rspca."
Breslin admits co-star Butler was responsible for much of the cash she raised.
She adds, "It built up to, like, $12 really quickly and then he said to me, 'I'm gonna give you $20, and the next four times that I swear I don't have to pay you. I get them for free.'
"I'm like, 'That's not the way it works.'"

Pamela Anderson's soon-to-be ex-husband Rick Salomon has landed a role in Cameron Diaz's new movie My Sister's Keeper.
While Anderson is seeking an annulment to end her brief marriage to the poker player, Salomon is using his notoriety to land film roles.
As well as marrying the Baywatch babe, Salomon also starred in the One Night In Paris sex video, which he shot with then-girlfriend Paris Hilton.
And now he's set for the big screen, according PlanetGossip.Eonline.com.
Salomon is set to play a courtroom bailiff in the drama, in which a mum, played by Diaz, is sued for emancipation by her daughter. Little Miss Sunshine star Abigail Breslin will play the Charlie's Angels star's girl.
And sources tell the website that Salomon has a speaking role.
