Netflix Plans Twenty Original Shows A Year

10 December 2014 7:40 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Appearing at a media conference earlier this week, Netflix's Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos says the company is aiming to increase the number of its 'Netflix Originals' series to the point that a new original show or season will premiere every two and a half weeks.

That would equate to around twenty seasons worth of series per year, effectively doubling this year's output. To put it in perspective, this year the Svod service had eight original series airing a fresh season of episodes - "House of Cards," "Orange is the New Black," "Hemlock Grove," "The Killing," "Trailer Park Boys," "Lilyhammer," "Marco Polo," "Bojack Horseman" - along with three kids shows "VeggieTales in the House," "All Hail King Julien" and "Turbo Fast".

Their pace of releasing shows is increasing as well so this goal could be reached sooner than expected. Currently on the slate for 2015 are: "The Adventures of Puss in Boots, »

DreamWorks Animation to Launch First TV Channel in Asia with HBO

9 December 2014 5:00 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

DreamWorks Animation is set to launch a TV channel featuring kids and family programming in 19 Asian countries sometime in the second half of 2015.

The channel will represent Dwa’s first foray into operating its own TV network in any part of the world.

Until now, the toon studio’s TV efforts have largely focused on licensing its properties to kids cable channels Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network and producing original series for streaming service Netflix and its own digital platforms run by AwesomenessTV.

HBO Asia, based in Singapore, will manage affiliate sales and marketing, as well as technical services, for the channel, with larger markets expected to launch first.

Original content won’t be created specifically for the channel.

Instead, the network will consist of a combination of original shows produced for partners like Netflix, as well as pre-existing and new series based on Classic Media’s library of character that »

Penguins of Madagascar movie review: it’s cheezey-dibble-icious

5 December 2014 9:00 AM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Gloriously bonkers. Like, Looney Tunes levels of cartoon madness. You will laugh your homo sapiens head off. I’m “biast” (pro): mostly love the Madagascar movies, really love the penguins

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

The hilarious paramilitary penguins of the Madagascar flicks have their own movie, and it is gloriously bonkers. Like, Looney Tunes levels of cartoon madness. You will laugh your homo sapiens head off. Penguins of Madagascar is closest in tone to what I called the “animated anarchy” of the third film, Europe’s Most Wanted… about which, I said two years ago, it felt as if the “cool, smooth nonsense of the penguins’ outrageous schemes… was allowed to take over the entire film.” Now this has actually happened, and there was much rejoicing. The plot is entirely superfluous. All you need to know is that »

How to Live Tweet ‘Peter Pan Live’ Like a Social Media Star

4 December 2014 11:10 AM, PST | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

When it comes to TV, social media loves a spectacle – especially a live one.

When NBC aired The Sound of Music Live last year, audiences reacted almost immediately by flooding social media with updates – both good and bad – about the show and, in particular, Carrie Underwood’s performance. The reaction was strong enough to make producers worry and even prompt Allison Williams to beg fans to not “hate-watch” Peter Pan Live.

If you’re planning to tune in and live-tweet NBC’s live broadcast of the boy who never grew up, which airs tonight at 8 p.m., you better bring your A game.

So here’s a handy guide to what to you should be ready for when it comes to making the most of your “live social media TV viewing” experience:

Know your hashtags. The official tracker is #PeterPanLive. Use the tag wisely. (And you can follow NBC's curated Twitter list of the broadcast's stars, but just »

Bodacious Comic Art for New Bill & Ted Comic Book Wyld Stallyns

3 December 2014 2:22 PM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

It was recently announced that Bill & Ted would be making a triumphant return in comic book form. The comic will be called Wyld Stallyns, and thanks to the Nerdist, today we have the first art and details surrounding the project.

The comic will run for six issues, and it comes from writers Brian Lynch (Puss in Boots) and artists Jerry Gaylord and Ian McGinty. I know we all would rather see a third movie, but at least William “Bill” S. Preston, Esq., and Theodore “Ted” Logan will be back in a new adventure! The comic will be released in March 2015.

Here are the details from the publisher, Boom! Studios:

Why We Love It: Similar to our Big Trouble in Little China comics, we’re returning readers to one of our favorite—and most excellent—cult-classic properties with a new Bill & Ted adventure of epic proportions. And because we’re fans first, »

Jeffrey Katzenberg interview: Penguins, DreamWorks, universes

1 December 2014 12:15 PM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

The boss of DreamWorks Animation, Jeffrey Katzenberg, on too many blockbusters, 20 years of DreamWorks, Marvel, and Penguins....

It's been 20 years since DreamWorks Animation set up its stall, originally as part of the broader DreamWorks Skg project, but since splintering out on its own. One of the constants in that time has been the man heading it up: Jeffrey Katzenberg. Having overseen animation at Disney from the mid-1980s through the second golden era for the studio in the early 1990s, his company has made 30 animated films.

Here, he chats to us about film 30, The Penguins Of Madagascar, as well as the state of the business, the changing face of animation, and his fears for 2016...

Let's start with The Penguins Of Madagascar. I'd argue that the Madagascar films to date make for about the best comedy trilogy of recent times. I'd take them over The Hangover for a start...

Sluggish ‘Penguins’ Dampens DreamWorks Animation Prospects

1 December 2014 9:14 AM, PST | Deadline New York | See recent Deadline New York news »

DreamWorks Animation faced a chilly reception from investors this morning after its latest release, Penguins of Madagascar, generated $36 million at the domestic box office over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday – well below consensus estimates for $50+ million. Shares are down more than 5% in mid-day trading as analysts debate whether the studio will have to take another write down following recent ones for Rise of the Guardians, Turbo, and Mr. Peabody and Sherman.

More important, the disappointing results bolstered bears’ fears that Dwa will continue to dive after a 12 month period in which it lost more than 31% of its market value. Next spring’s Home looks “uninspiring,” B. Riley Co’s Eric Wold said this morning. That, plus the likely move of B.O.O.: Bureau Of Otherworldly Operations from its planned summer release, paint a bleak picture “to investors or potential acquirers of the studio,” per Wold.

DreamWorks' Jeffrey Katzenberg: 'Hollywood has let public down with 3D'

30 November 2014 1:30 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

As CEO of DreamWorks Animation, Jeffrey Katzenberg has seen a huge upheaval in the Hollywood landscape over the past 20 years. The carefully-crafted 2D animations have fallen by the wayside, as souped-up digital blockbusters like Shrek, Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar have taken their place.

Katzenberg, who oversaw an animation renaissance during his tenure as Walt Disney Studios chairman (which spanned from The Little Mermaid to Tarzan), isn't wistful for those heady days. "I don't have a nostalgic gene in me," he told Digital Spy. "What I find most valuable focusing on are my mistakes and on the things that went badly because I find my best lessons come from the things I did wrong, not the things I did right."

The studio boss addressed latest offering Penguins of Madagascar, what's in store for DreamWorks and why the industry has let the public down with its approach to 3D.

Forecast: Katniss to Fend Off 'Penguins,' 'Bosses' Over Thanksgiving

26 November 2014 1:15 PM, PST | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Penguins of Madagascar and Horrible Bosses 2 should do decent business over the long Thanksgiving weekend, though its unlikely that the two new franchise titles come anywhere close to taking first place from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1.A year ago, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire fell 53 percent over the three-day Thanksgiving weekend. If Mockingjay matched that drop, it would earn $57 million over the three-day weekend, and around $85 million for the five-day frame (including Wednesday and Thursday). However, word-of-mouth for Mockingjay isn't quite as strong, and grosses have dropped off at a slightly steeper rate from Friday to Tuesday. Look for Mockingjay to fall 55 to 60 percent in its second frame, which would put it around $50 million ($70-75 million five-day).Opening at 3,654 locations, Penguins of Madagascar should take second place ahead of Horrible Bosses 2.Madagascar is one of DreamWorks Animation's most successful franchises: all three movies have earned over $180 million in the U. »

DreamWorks Animation Gives B.O.O.: Bureau Of Otherworldly Operations a New Release Date

23 November 2014 12:00 PM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Dreamworks Animation is developing a new Ghostbusters-like movie called B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherwordly Operations. It really sounds like it could be a great movie. It was supposed to be released on June 5th, 2015, but the studio has has pulled it from that date, and a new one has yet to be given. Pixar’s Inside Out is scheduled for June 19th, 2015, and it seems like DreamWorks doesn’t want to compete with that.

The supernatural action comedy follows two bumbling apparitions who find themselves in an extraordinary after-life adventure when they join the Bureau of Otherworldly Operations (B.O.O.) – the ghost world’s elite counter-haunting unit – and ultimately must face off against the planet’s greatest haunter.

B.O.O. features the voices of Seth Rogen and Melissa McCarthy as the lead ghost agents. Rashida Jones, Matt Bomer, Jennifer Coolidge, and Octavia Spencer voice additional roles. »
