Not Bad
itsmcpaolo16 July 2018
Some decent laughs. It was more a CBC comedy show for my parents than me and my friends, is a good way I would describe it. Nothing special and really basic comedy but good for what it was, a few laughs here and there and Mary Walsh is always fun.

Vulgar as f&#k and hilarious
itrustyou-136-1031924 December 2017
If you can find this show on YouTube or a torrent somewhere, and you're not easily offended, I guarantee you will laugh. It makes Trailer Park Boys look like Downtown Abbey. Super-vulgar, but wonderfully inflected by a non-idiot-male, unique Newfoundland sensibility. I used to watch Codco and thought it was one of the funniest shows on TV. Mary Walsh is behind this one too, and it is OVER THE TOP.

I's the by who loves the show...
lofthouse9 February 2006
You have to appreciate the very off-kilter Newfoundland sense of humour to get this show (and if you're not used to the thick-as-molasses Newfoundland accent, turn on the captions on your TV). It helps if you're from the Rock or if you've been out there (though that's certainly not required).

Personally, I think this show is a work of genius--easily one of the best Canadian comedy creations in years. I actually have to tape it so that I can pause it every few minutes--otherwise, I miss entire sections of dialogue because I'm still laughing at something from the last scene! It's not easy to steal the show from Mary Walsh, but Susan Kent (Darlene) does it effortlessly. I personally think that Shawn Majumder (a funny, funny guy if you've ever seen him do stand-up) is underused in this show, but hey--its still early days, so who knows...

Great stuff, 'bys! More, more, more!!!

Dull
jennaspivac18 November 2008
I like Mary Walsh but this show was just really dull and boring I watched every episode and never laughed one time. Maybe I just didn't get the humour if it was regional humour or something but it just seemed like bad jokes and a lot of dirty jokes for no reason. I don't mind dirty jokes if they are good but the jokes were all just stupid and predictable with no reason for them. I am not surprised this show didn't last very long and the few friends I had who tried to watch it didn't like it in fact I am the only one I know who kept watching every week it's one of those shows where you want it to be funny and I kept watching it waiting for it to get good but it just never happened.

A very undervalued show
newatt-231 August 2007
I can't understand how undervalued this show is. It's got all sorts of elements of other popular shows (particularly HBO ones like "Six Feet Under" and "Trailer Park Boys") and is outrageously funny. Maybe it's the Newf accents, although they have been kept down to a dull roar. I did spend some educational years in Newfoundland, so perhaps this is why I think it's so brilliant, but it doesn't seem all that impenetrable to me.

Naughtiness was everywhere and it was hilarious. Cedric and the moose literally made my insides lose all air and go giddy with glee over something so disgusting being on our national broadcaster.

Except for Sean Majumder, Mary Walsh and Mark McKinney I wasn't all that familiar with any of the other actors, but they really did such a good job of portraying that dichotomy between expected reactions and actual reactions that kept me in hysterics throughout.

I've been really sorry that this show has disappeared.

Following the Newfoundland family of the Fureys who run the town's only bridal, ambulatory, and funeral services company. Mary Walsh stars as the series lead with Mark McKinney (kids in the hall, superstore), Shaun Majumder and Susan Kent (22 minutes) also appearing. It's honestly not that funny, I don't really think I laughed throughout any of the series hour long pilot nor any of its short 6 episode first season. Each episode is a mix of weddings, medical, or funeral troubles, with jokes around anything from alcoholism to infidelity to necrophilia. There's a weird amount of necrophilia jokes tbh. Overall wasn't for me. Interestingly the series pilot originally aired along with 2 other pilots with CBC going to produce whichever pilots performed the best. Apparently this did well enough to get a season (and a Christmas film special available on Gem), alongside Colin Mochrie's Getting Along Famously, an apparently even worse show (according to imdb) which has seemingly been erased from the internet. As for HM&D, too long of a name, too many ideas, not the right time.

Highly underrated, hilarious, Newfoundland comedy!
lisajohnson-5313520 January 2021
I've never written a review before, but after watching 'Hatching, Matching and Dispatching' on Amazon Prime I felt compelled to share my thoughts on this wonderful, Canadian gem! Mary Walsh is superb ,(as usual), and Susan Kent as 'Darlene' was excellent! If you're not averse to foul language, un-PC, and sometimes crude-humour, give this show a try. I had a lazy day, all by myself, and binge-watched on the weekend; I genuinely laughed right out-loud every episode.

One of the funniest shows I've ever watched!
strickrick8 March 2012
Can't believe that this show was cancelled, I couldn't wait to see the newest episode. I was also hoping to get this released on DVD or even find some poorly ripped video on the internet but I've yet to find it. Troy (Jonny Harris) for me made the show, just seen an episode of Comedy Now with him and all I could think of was getting all the episodes of HMD.

I also ran into Shaun Majumder one night and told him how much I loved the show. He was there with another bunch of the writers and he told me how much fun that they were having making it, it was nice to see how genuine he was.

Maybe I'm a little bias but I truly enjoyed every second of the show and would love to see it again.

Under rated yet greatly appreciated.

At the time of Hatching's tragically short lifespan of 1 season (after the pilot, later an Xmas Special) I greatly appreciated the dark and in your face comedy and the amazingly non-formulaic format of this gem (not to be confused with CBC's tragic netviewer) of a series.

After discovering the Trailer Park Boys I was craving some of that unmistakably gritty East Coast Canadian dark-comedy and Hatching, Matching scratched the itch in a totally unique way. As a non-Newfoundlander I was greatly relieved by it's style when compared to the other Canadian (and some non-Canadian) comedies of the era and missed the Fury families antics greatly until A Christmas Fury, starring the same cast, was released a couple of years ago, which gives me hope that maybe the CBC will make a good choice and give the series the real chance it deserves.

The show also marks the beginnings of not just Newfoundland's but now some of Canada's most prominent comedians; Johnny Harris, Sue Kent, Joel Hynes, Sherry White, Adriana Maggs, Steve Cochrane and of course Shawn Majumder, not to mention Mark McKinney and Mary Walsh who appears to be somewhat of a show-runner.

Bring back Walsh and her loveable gang!

Brilliant Newfoundland Comedy
NailToTheX18 January 2010
HMD is (was) one of the funniest shows I've had the pleasure of watching. Perhaps my view is a little distorted as I am from Newfoundland. Nevertheless I started watching this show with the expectation that it was going to be terrible as I generally do not enjoy the comedy of Mary Walsh. I was shocked at how outlandishly funny and refreshing the show was. It was clearly a distorted representation of what Newfoundland life is all about – and it is a monster hit in my opinion. This is hands down high tier (albeit low brow) Canadian comedy show compared to classics like Kids in the Hall and This Hour has 22 Minutes.

How can CBC cancel a show like this, but push on with the dribble such as Corner Gas?

I loved, loved, loved this show

I've looked for a copy of it for about 10 years. No luck, of course, in spite of it being the best Canadian show I have ever seen. (And pretty much one of the best TV comedy series I've ever seen, in 60+ years of TV viewing.)I have no idea why CBC would not release it on DVD, given its enormous popularity. All one can find online are little snippets - although the first episode did pop up very briefly online a few years ago, then was yanked within days. (Seriously, if the Trailer Park Boys can be sold via DVD, then why not Hatching, Matching and Dispatching?) Anyway, Mary Walsh recently did discuss doing a Christmas movie of it, but I don't know if anything ever came of it.

Priceless
Justachick4 February 2006
I stumbled on this show when spending an evening with my brother and his wife. It was truly hilarious. It is worth your while to watch. Friday isn't the best night for me to watch it but thanks to the miracle of PVR I don't miss a show. The Furey Family story is one I have been enjoying. There is a lot of talent in this show Mary Walsh is comedic genius. Shaun Majumder who has been on This Hour has 22 Minutes, "Royal Canadian Air Farce" "Cedric the Entertainer Presents" and he made an appearance in Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. When Troy (Jonny Harris) plays the 'air guitar' version of the chicken dance I almost died laughing. I hope that this show stays on the air.

Funniest show ever
Tweezerpants20 November 2017
Don't @ me. Gets canceled by the CBC and goes on to win the Gemini for writing in a comedy. A primetime broadcast that aired swearing that wasn't bleeped out, including the "c" word, to great comedic effect. All the cast members are funny af but Susan Kent's portrayal of Darlene is outstanding. Strong writing and likable characters. Best Canadian sitcom. Newfoundlanders know funny. I seriously recommend this series. (If you can find it anywhere.) Returns as a Xmas TV movie, December 2017.

Hidden gem

A hilarious mockumentary style series in the vein of The Office and Parks N Rec. Do yourself a favour, give it a chance. If you like the humour of Christopher Guest, this will be well up your alley.

Very good for a Canadian TV show AND Surprise Surprise, -Actually- funny.
therskybznuiss14 March 2021
To have a good Canadian Television show which is actually funny is very rare.

I don't like Corner Gas or any of that other 'safe' style Canadian Comedy which is just so boring.

I love everything that's come from the East Coast. In fact I think the only better Canadian Show's are all East Coast and all Mary Walsh associated with the exception of Trailer Park boy's, which has gone on too long (I cant stand the cartoon). I also like Codco more than Kids in The Hall, but it's a close one.

I want more Mary Walsh , more of this show. The Xmas special by Walsh and the gang brought me a lot of hope, and I really think more of that would work.

One of the funniest shows I've watched
karissa-0402713 September 2023
I put this on TV after reading a facebook status on "the funnest show they've seen". Most of these sort of recommendations I normally take with a grain of salt, but I thought I would try it nonetheless.

It delivered.

One episode in and my laugh tears were flowing. I may have just been in a fantastic mood, but I've never laughed so hard on a television show in my entire life. Not exaggerating in the slightest. I was weeping.

Being from Cape Breton, NS may have helped with the being able to understand the Newfie accent. I will surly recommend this show to everyone who will listen to me.

Just fantastic.
