Enjoyable horror short
8 July 2010 | by (The Last New Jersey Drive-In on the Left) – See all my reviews

Insensitive Sarah (a perfectly bratty Alissa Dean) and her wimpy brother Joey (solid Sean Whalin) are a couple of obnoxious kids who are out trick or treating on Halloween. The rude duo get more than they bargained for when they sneak into a sideshow attraction at a local carnival in order to check out the freaks inside. Writer/director Marcus Wagner does a sound job of creating and sustaining a suitably creepy ooga booga spookshow atmosphere while paying affectionate homage to Tod Browning's 1932 horror classic "Freaks." The freaks are a genuinely scary and grotesque bunch. Moreover, the nasty and macabre conclusion with Joey being turned into a human pumpkin is truly sick and upsetting. Eric Frandsen delivers a splendidly sinister performance as evil barker Mr. Fingers. Alice Cooper briefly pops up to bookend the short. Both Anthony Hardwick's shadowy cinematography and the shivery score by Jeremy Adelman and Mitch Davis further enhance the overall fleshcrawling mood. Good ghoulish fun.
