Storyline

Two brothers leave their home in Mexico in search of the 'American Dream', only to realize it was in front of them all the time. Angel is tired of living in his small Mexican town and has no interest in following in his father's footsteps. Instead he resolves to run away, across to cross the border and find his American dream. His older brother, Carlos, has plans of his own and they don't involve leaving home. When Angel tells his older brother of his grand scheme Carlos knows he won't be able to stop him, so he decides to tag along in order to watch over his headstrong little brother. Double-crossed by a smuggler, they find themselves alone in the desert. What follows is a strange and hilarious adventure filled with crazy characters and eye-opening truths until they finally realize the dream they were chasing was back home where they started. America 101
20 March 2005 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

When I watched America 101, I got a true feel about Arizona's border culture. The brothers share a bond I feel with my family and my brothers so I could easily relate to them. I caught a clip of Oprah the other day and she commented on the movie Diary of a Mad Black Woman(great movie!) saying something along the lines of how she appreciated the way it portrayed black people as genuine people in relationships sharing love and feelings with hugging and kissing showing that black people are just like everyone else, and not as stereotypical trouble makers as often portrayed. And this is how I feel about America 101 on how it shows Mexicans as hardworking and genuine. I felt a connection with the brothers on their journey to the U.S. And the bonus to it all was that it was a comedy that had my mom and me laughing the whole way through. I enjoyed the beautiful southwest landscape and my mom said she thought the music was great. There was light profanity in a couple of spots but other than that I would recommend it to the entire family.
