A new animated TV series is in the works inspired by a video game featured in “Boy Kills World,” the upcoming martial arts action film starring Bill Skarsgård as a deaf boy trained to enact vengeance on those who murdered his family.
“Super Dragon Punch Force 3,” the real-life action-packed fighter video game that appears in the film (and will launch day-and-date with the U.S. and global release of “Boy Kills World” on April 26), has had its own animated series greenlit. Now in development, the show, which is set to dive into the universe of the game, will follow a highly-skilled yet dysfunctional team of misfits as they fight to defend their world from sentient robots, an ancient network of cultists and other intergalactic threats.

Glen Powell has already played a hit man, so why not star as a running man?
The “Hit Man” actor/writer and “Anyone But You” star has officially been cast in Edgar Wright’s “Running Man” remake, as announced at CinemaCon 2024. The feature will be released by Paramount.
Writer/director Wright previously announced that he was adapting Stephen King’s 1982 novel “The Running Man” (published under pseudonym Richard Bachman) for another big screen iteration in 2021. Deadline reported at the time that Wright will be teaming with his “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” screenwriter Michael Bacall to be as faithful to the source material as possible. The project was hinted at since 2017 with Wright tweeting that it’s the one film he would want to remake.

Glen Powell is lacing up his sneakers.
The “Top Gun: Maverick” star will lead the cast of Edgar Wright’s “The Running Man,” taking on a role played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1987 cult favorite. The dystopian action film is based on a novel of the same name by horror maestro Stephen King, which he first published under a pseudonym, Richard Bachman.
Wright, best known for directing the satiric zombie film “Shaun of the Dead,” will also produce the picture along with Simon Kinberg and Nira Park. The filmmaker, whose work overflows with style and wit, most recently made the psychological horror film “Last Night in Soho.” His other credits include “Hot Fuzz,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “Baby Driver.”
Powell is on a hot streak lately and has found himself in demand by many studios who believe he has the kind of charisma that could make him a major star.

In a recent post on Twitter/X, fellow beloved game director, Sam Lake, of Remedy Entertainment posted a video of himself in the process of getting digitally scanned for inclusion in an upcoming video game for Kojima Productions.
Fans of both directors are now clamoring for more information on this exciting collaboration. Many fans have begun to speculate on what game this collaboration could relate to, with the consensus generally being that it is most likely for On the Beach.

After collaborating on the crime drama TV series Fargo, Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead extended their romantic relationship from the screen to real life. The couple joined the cast during season 3 of Noah Hawley’s series and played each other’s romantic interests. They first met on the set of the show in 2017.
Riley Stearns was Winstead’s ex-husband at the time, while McGregor was still married to Eve Mavrakis. The Fargo costars began dating shortly after their respective marriages ended. The Mercy Street actress may be a talented actress in her own right, but she could not resist the allure of her now-husband, Ewan McGregor.

Before their first on-set meeting, Winstead admitted in a recent interview that she had a serious crush on their son’s father.

Before Mary Elizabeth Winstead played the roles of comic book-based Ramona Flowers and John McClane’s daughter, she starred as Lee Montgomery in Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof. At the time, Winstead was making her mark in the horror slasher genre, even leading the ensemble cast of Final Destination 3. When she got the audition call for Death Proof, Winstead pulled off one little trick to get past the audition stage.

Winstead shared that she wore flip-flops to the audition to tap into the director’s alleged cinematic foot fetish. The Fargo actress managed to impress Tarantino with her take on Lee, rather than use her foot to get cast in the film.

Hollywood faces a significant imbalance when it comes to its stars. There are some actors like Adam Sandler who can’t separate the profession from real life and cast his friends and family as characters in movies. Then, there are others who vanish into a role for years, portraying their commitment to the art.
Actors like Dwayne Johnson and Adam Sandler often portray characters close to their real-life persona
While bringing their real-life persona into a character is not necessarily a bad thing, there are actors whom the audiences love for it and some whom they hate for the same. Here’s a look at actors who often portray characters close to their public image.

Brandon Routh and Mena Suvari will lead the cast of Grammy-winning director Joseph Kahn’s next film, “Ick.”
The film aims to evoke the timeless creature features of the 1980s with an ambitious arsenal of scares and comedy. Routh stars as Hank, a high school science teacher who still pines for his childhood sweetheart, played by Suvari. While discovering he may have a teenage daughter, portrayed by Malina Weissman (“Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events”), Hank must grapple with a terrifying alien anomaly (the titular “Ick”) invading their small town.
Interstellar Entertainment, co-founded by Udaya Sharma, D.C. Cassidy and Michael Fisk, is backing the project. The company is emerging as a powerhouse in the independent film space, currently in the midst of a $100 million fundraising effort.

Your scent. It's like a drug to me. You're like my own personal brand of heroin. Or perhaps it's just that Lionsgate simply refuses to let sleeping dogs (shape-shifters?) lie, even now that we're more than a decade removed from the peak of "Twilight" fever. The studio has already revealed its intention to reboot Stephenie Meyer's YA fantasy romance phenomenon for the small screen as a TV series, which begs the question: how exactly does it plan to go about trying to rebottle the "stupid lightning in a stupid bottle" that was the original movie adaptations of Meyer's books, to quote /Film's Bj Colangelo? We now have part of the answer and, incredibly enough, it's not at all a bad idea.

Founded by Maxwell Gaines in 1944, the Entertaining Comics brand (a.k.a. EC Comics) initially specialized in educational comics and stories aimed at children. But after Gaines died in a boating accident in ’47, his 25-year-old son William took control of the company and changed its direction, exploring the genres of horror, sci-fi, and satire while bringing us classic titles like Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, The Haunt of Fear, Weird Science, Weird Fantasy, and Mad. Sadly, EC Comics was at its peak when parents started to worry about the negative effects reading comic books could have on their children, leading to things like a Congressional hearing that blamed comic books for juvenile delinquency – a claim that was backed up by the book Seduction of the Innocent, written by psychiatrist Fredric Wertham. So by 1956, EC Comics ceased publishing all of their titles except for Mad. Those classic EC...

Founded by Max Gaines in 1944 and taken over by son William Gaines later that decade, EC Comics is one of the most legendary names in horror, known for their series’ Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, and The Haunt of Fear. Eighty years after the company came onto the scene, THR reports this afternoon that EC Comics is coming back from the dead.

In the early 1950s, EC Comics was the bad boy of comic publishers. Its comics such as Tales From the Crypt, Weird Science and Two-Fisted Tales sold millions in mid-century America. Unfortunately, its stories — at times shocking, horrifying, and even progressive — also drew scrutiny and backlash, and the company found itself in the cross hairs of censorship and regulation at the height of the McCarthy era. The company ultimately shuttered, with the last comic hitting newsstands and drug stores in 1956.
Now, seventy years after the creation of the self-regulatory body Comics Code Authority, the infamous comics company is blasting out of the crypt and returning with a brand new line of comics.

In addition to all of the Barbies and Kens who lived in Barbieland, there was also Allan, who happened to be Ken’s best friend, played by Michael Cera. Allan also had his moments, such as the scene where he battled the construction workers in Barbieland’s entrance. Curiously, though, Cera revealed that this was not the original concept for that particular fight scene.
Ben Affleck was supposed to make a cameo appearance in the movie and thus had to fight the construction workers, according to the 39-year-old Ontario-born actor. Unfortunately, the former couldn’t take on the role in Barbie due to his commitment to the biographical sports drama film Air.
This gave Cera’s Allan the opportunity to show off his fighting prowess. But had Affleck been available to play the role, the scene would have been drastically altered.

Michael Cera would be up for a Barbie spinoff focusing on his character, Allan.
The actor stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday, where he discussed Greta Gerwig’s eight-time Oscar-nominated film and his now-beloved take on Ken’s best friend.
“[It was an] amazing thing to be a part of,” he told Jimmy Fallon of being in the biggest film of 2023. “I mean, I couldn’t believe that I had a chance to be a part of it. It just came out of nowhere for me. I think I was like a last-minute replacement of someone, the person they actually wanted.”
Cera was right. Barbie casting directors Allison Jones and Lucy Bevan revealed that Jonathan Groff was the first person they approached to portray Allan in the film. The 2022 sexiest man alive broke millions of hearts when he got married to Portuguese actress Alba Baptista last year, the two dated for over a year and finally tied the knot last year in a private wedding in the presence of few friends and family members.
What’s interesting about their wedding was that they married on two separate occasions, one in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and the other in Alba’s hometown Portugal.
Post their second marriage, the newlyweds went on honeymoon and were spotted several times together in recent months.

There’s nothing so freaky about “Freaky Tales,” Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s sci-fi omnibus ode to ‘80s cinema nostalgia that takes the definition of “derivative,” packages a bunch of retro cinematic references smugly into winky “you get it, right?” pastiche, and stretches it to its furthest possible event horizon.
The problem with structuring your film around four interlocking chapters, each with its own segueing title card, is if you’re not down with the first, you’ll be counting down the passage of time groaningly until the next. Last time they were behind the camera, Boden and Fleck had decamped their indie roots, including the lovely “Half Nelson” and “Sugar” — films powered by real characters — for the irresistible Faust’s bargain of directing 2019’s “Captain Marvel.” It seems they have not stripped themselves of the MCU’s cheeky, self-reflexive DNA, here writing and directing a film that thinks...

[This story contains spoilers for Ahsoka and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.]
Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Mary Elizabeth Winstead had to let two exciting projects in Ahsoka and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off speak for themselves, but now she’s finally looking back on her rather significant 2023.
In early 2022, Winstead officially joined the Star Wars galaxy in order to bring the beloved animated character of General Hera Syndulla to live-action for the first time. When the offer originally came in from Ahsoka creator Dave Filoni, it allowed Winstead the opportunity to reunite with Rosario Dawson 16 years after they last shared the screen in Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof. It also presented her the chance to join the storied franchise that she already had a great deal of familiarity with, as her life partner, Ewan McGregor, has been playing Obi-Wan Kenobi since the late ‘90s and had just wrapped his own eponymously titled Star Wars Disney+ series.

It's been nearly 20 years since Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie lit up the screen as John and Jane Smith, a longtime couple whose love life has lost its fizzle when they discover they're both secretly spies/assassins from rival agencies that have been tasked with killing the other. Wisely, rather than trying to bottle sexy lightning twice, the creatives behind the upcoming "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" TV show have opted for an entirely different approach to the original.
Developed by Francesca Sloane and Donald Glover, the "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" series was initially set to reunite Glover with his "Solo: A Star Wars Story" co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge before creative differences led to the latter departing the project (but with the "Atlanta" and "Fleabag" creators still on friendly terms). However, as enticing -- and hot -- as the Glover-Waller-Bridge pairing read on paper, the show has found what appears to be...

There’s a moment early in Episode 2 of “The Brothers Sun” that goes way harder than it needs to. It’s not any of the bodily dismemberment as gangster Charlie (Justin Chien) breaks up the pieces of an assassin with the calm help of his mother, Eileen (Michelle Yeoh), while his estranged younger brother Bruce (Sam Song Li) looks on in horror. It’s not the ambush where Charlie and Bruce need to escape hitmen wearing inflatable dinosaur costumes. It’s not any of the machinations of the Taipei gangsters now gunning for the Sun family. It’s just this little beat of Yeoh sitting at a vanity, taking a moment amid the massive disruption to her life brought by Charlie’s arrival from Taipei and the failed hit on her husband Big Sun (Johnny Kou).

Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) goes on quite a journey to defeat Ramona Flowers’ (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) exes in the Scott Pilgrim franchise, which began as graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, was brought to the big screen by Edgar Wright in 2010 with Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, and most recently in Netflix‘s anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. The show brought to life the characters who inhabited the pages of O’Malley’s books with help from the film’s cast as Cera, Winstead, and many more reprised their live-action roles as voice actors this time around. For those less familiar with the IP, Scott is a twentysomething Canadian band member who finds himself obsessed with Ramona Flowers, a mysterious American with an ever-changing, brightly-hued hairdo. Linked to the younger Knives Chau (Ellen Wong), his draw to Ramona outweighs all else, even when he learns she has a league of...

George R.R. Martin ended 2023 with a big announcement. Not about his books — the new ones, anyway — but the author of “A Song of Ice and Fire” offered an update on the various projects in progress that will adapt his works, including animated series.
Martin posted to his blog on December 31, echoing popular sentiments about Peak TV and heaping praise on Netflix’s “Blue Eye Samurai,” a show that recently won him over. He noted that he has discussed multiple animated projects from the “A Song of Ice and Fire” and “Game of Thrones” universe in previous and ongoing conversations with HBO, including two which were shelved (he strongly preferes “shelved” to “killed”).
He then announced that “Nine Voyages,” a “House of the Dragon” tie-in about the adventures of Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint), had moved from live-action to animation, a move Martin says he wholeheartedly supports.

Timothée Chalamet is kicking off the holiday season with Wonka. The Candy Man’s origins is not the only recent land of pure imagination for the young actor as he also navigates the sandy terrains in Dune Part Two early next year. And while Chalamet has built quite a start to his blockbuster franchise resume, he started to gain acclaim in dramas including Lady Bird and Little Women, which were written and directed by Greta Gerwig. Gerwig would of course have a big year with the meta-comedy Barbie.
According to Variety, Chalamet was promoting Wonka on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon where he revealed that he was originally approached to make a cameo appearance in Barbie, but it wouldn’t work out due to his schedule. Chalamet explained, “There was an idea for Saoirse Ronan and I to do a cameo in it. I don’t know what the cameo would’ve been.

Edgar Wright is back in the limelight after producing “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off,” the critically adored anime expansion of “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” which reunites the entire cast of his beloved 2010 film. But the success of the Netflix series has many fans wondering when Wright will get back in the director’s chair for another movie.
In a new appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Wright offered some hints about what his first film since “Last Night in Soho” might be. The director gave an update on his planned reboot of “The Running Man,” Stephen King’s dystopian novel that inspired the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie of the same name. Wright explained that his film would not necessarily be a remake of the movie, but a more faithful adaptation of King’s novel, including parts that director Paul Michael Glaser omitted.

Anime has catapulted in popularity the past couple of decades, with movies big and small all adding Easter eggs and references to the biggest animated shows out of Japan. We've also seen streamers like Netflix invest heavily in anime, collaborating with anime studios to produce animated adaptations of known franchises like "The Witcher" and "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World." Even "Star Wars" has gotten into the anime game with "Star Wars: Visions."
The rise in popularity of anime in the West has also happened current with the rise of the "isekai" genre. This has become one of the biggest and most prominent genres within anime in the last 10 years. The isekai genre (literally "another world") involves a protagonist getting transported to a fantasy world where they gain big magical powers and face dangerous creatures. Think "Alice in Wonderland" or "The Chronicles of Narnia."

"They have a very cinematic approach to anime. They don't want to anything that is generic or cliched, and that's how I feel about my art as well." Netflix's new anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is already available to watch streaming. For one final promotion, Netflix has unveiled a 10 minute behind-the-scenes video taking us to Japan where the animation studio Science Saru is located. Based on the comic books by Canadian creator Bryan Lee O'Malley, the anime is inspired by Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs the World movie but is directly pulled from the comics themselves. They explain this video that the voice cast recorded first, then they animated the series with the voices already in place - the opposite of what usually happens in Japan. This anime series is also quite diverse - it's showrun by Canadian Bryan Lee O'Malley and American BenDavid Grabinski, directed by Spanish animation director Abel Gongora,...

While Edgar Wright has dabbled in action filmmaking before, a little with “Hot Fuzz” and ‘Scott Pilgrim,’ and much more with “Baby Driver,” he has yet to really do something that would be described as blockbuster filmmaking. However, back in the day, it appears Wright was offered the keys to one of the premier action franchises going today—the beloved “Mission: Impossible” film series—but he turned it down.

Edgar Wright appeared on the latest episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast and went on a reflective rant about the current state of Hollywood’s intellectual property addiction (via IndieWire). Without calling out any franchises in particular, the “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “Baby Driver” director expressed frustration over the lack of breathing room when it comes to studios needing to plan and date multiple franchise movies over the course of a few years. Wright didn’t name Marvel, for instance, but that studio proves his point as it released six movies in the last two years.
“One of the problems with film franchises is sometimes when they announce — I’m not mentioning any names or anything — when they announce like massive slates of films and TV shows […] there’s a danger of killing the golden goose,” Wright said. “It is a weird thing: If I could go...

Edgar Wright may be behind the Cornetto trilogy and the “Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World” universe, thanks to a new animated Netflix series, but the auteur is now speaking out on franchise fatigue as a whole.
While appearing on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, without calling out specific franchises, Wright stressed the importance of creating fresh material or new takes on beloved stories.

Every year — if you’re lucky, and TV fans usually are — there is a show that debuts to gasps, applause, and breathless wonder; a comedy that elicits tears and cackles; a genre piece that redefines world building and whose title becomes an adjective for future audiences.
For me, that show was “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” — existing IP, no question, but a reimagining that blew me away on every level. I remember watching “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” in a movie theater in 2010, wanting it to start over the second the credits finished rolling. I remember feeling the same when I finished Episode 8 of Netflix’s animated expansion, my heart full as I realized the bar for creativity had been punched to the moon and back.
And because TV fans are lucky, it wasn’t the only time that I or the rest of IndieWire’s TV team felt that way...

‘Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’ Creators On Season 2: “We’re Not Working On It. We Have No Official Ideas”
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off creators Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski are opening up about the possibilities of a second season for their animated series.
Although the Netflix show has received favorable reviews, O’Malley and Grabinski are not currently planning a sequel and have made this a one-and-done show — for now.
“It’s self-contained for now. We loved what we did. We put it all in there. We don’t have any ideas lying on the floor. We pretty much put them all in,” O’Malley told Rolling Stone in an interview. “I never say never, but right now, it seems like it would take about 50 different miracles simultaneously for another season to happen. So we’ll see.”
O’Malley added, “People are always complaining about how shows get canceled after one season. So we hedged our bets immediately, and tried to make a self-contained one season.”
