Watch: Red Band Trailer For The Coens Cannes Contender 'Inside Llewyn Davis'

8 May 2013 11:08 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

In just over a week, the Coens will present their latest "Inside Llewyn Davis" to the always fussy audiences at the Cannes Film Festival. While we'll have to wait until we actually see the thing, it's looking like another success from the sibling directors. CBS Films is already thinking Oscar, but if you're not going to France and can't wait until December, this red band trailer should hold over. Granted, it's more or less the same thing we saw at the beginning of the year, albeit with a few extra beats and some more cussin', but it's still mightily impressive. Oscar Isaac seems to live in the role as the title character, a folk singer in the '60s trying to find his path, in a relationship with an awesomely icy Carey Mulligan and... yes, indeed that's Justin Timberlake dropping the suit and tie for some more rustic threads. Visually, »

Carl Franklin To Direct Biopic About Soul Music Legend Sam Cooke

27 March 2013 8:24 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

As we've said before, music biopics tend to take a long time to develop. Music rights, pleasing various interests, getting the right talent in place can be tricky, and getting it all lined up at the right time even more difficult, but the wheels seem to be moving on a biopic on soul music legend Sam Cooke. Those of you with a good memory will recall that back in 2011, the project was first announced with veteran British writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais (the pair behind "The Commitments" and "Across The Universe") having delivered a screenplay, but not much has been heard since. Until now... Shadow & Act reports that Carl Franklin ("One False Move," "Devil In A Blue Dress," "House Of Cards") is now attached to direct the film. Abkco, the record company which owns most of Cooke's output, are independently producing the project which is based on the »

Exclusive: Carl Franklin Set To Write & Direct Sam Cooke Biopic; Casting Underway

26 March 2013 5:28 PM, PDT | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

It was in mid-2011 when we first announced that a Sam Cooke biopic was in the works.  At the time, a script had already been written (by the screenwriters who penned Julie Taymor's Across The Universe, and The Commitments - Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais), which was an adaptation of Peter Guralnick's 2005 bio, Dream Boogie: The Triumph of Sam Cooke.  The news came 4 years after author Guralnick produced the award-winning documentary Sam Cooke: Legend, said to be "the only authorized documentary on Cooke."  The film was to cover Cooke's entire life (born in 1931, died in 1964), and, apparently, all rights (music and »

Blu-ray Review: ‘Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away’ Renders Spectacle Incoherent

19 March 2013 6:42 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Contrary to what James Cameron may have you believe, a 3D movie theater is not the best venue to showcase the super-human physical feats of Cirque du Soleil. In fact, it’s a pretty awful substitute for the visceral thrill of a live performance. The audience experiences it like an English-speaking agnostic attending a Latin mass—there’s plenty of loud pageantry on display, but none of it makes any sense.

That’s because Andrew Adamson’s big-screen novelty, “Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away,” is a tonally disjointed highlight reel that stitches together a greatest hits catalogue of Cirque acts while presenting them with zero context. Attempting to describe any given moment of this picture would be as hopeless an effort as Matt Lauer’s bewildered commentary during Danny Boyle’s Opening Ceremony at last year’s Olympics. I could tell you that a hobo clown is lit on »

Video Interview: Jim Sturgess on 'Upside Down', 'Cloud Atlas' & More

18 March 2013 10:10 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Bursting onto the mainstream acting landscape in Across the Universe, actor Jim Sturgess has since succeeded in balancing blockbusters with smaller independent movies. His latest film, Upside Down, is a science fiction romance that fits both of those categories, wrapping a love story in a ton of often-impressive visual effects. I had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Sturgess recently about his experience working on the movie, his take on the cold reception and poor box office of Cloud Atlas (which was my favorite movie of last year), working with visionary directors, and much more. Watch the interview and let us know your thoughts. We were staged in pretty close quarters for this interview, so please forgive some of the brief framing issues that pop up as the video progresses. I think the conversation went well anyway and we covered a lot of ground in a short time, including his »

You Must Know: Joe Anderson

7 March 2013 9:19 AM, PST | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

Yes, this post is titled You Must Know, but in truth, you probably already Do Know Joe Anderson. However, the actor is such a cinematic chameleon, it's totally understandable why his name doesn't immediately conjure up memories of his amazing work in Across The Universe, The Ruins, The Crazies, The Grey or, even, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2.

Thanks to countless wigs, varying degrees of facial hair, an impressive mastery of accents and the ability to transform his physicality, Anderson tends to be nearly unrecognizable from one project to the next. A true skillset, but as he tells me, it can also be a detriment to an actor trying to gain a foothold in Hollywood.

ETonline: Given your propensity for smaller budget films, I was kind of surprised to see you in the final Twilight film.

Joe Anderson: It wasn't something I would expect myself to go after either. Especially knowing »

Love Defies Gravity In Upside Down Trailer

25 January 2013 4:17 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Argentinian filmmaker Juan Diego Solanas devises an original sci-fi romantic fantasy with his latest movie, Upside Down, starring Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess in the lead roles. The film toys with the concept of gravity, and involves two planets that are in close proximity with each other. The planet’s occupants are separated by class, with the upper class citizens at the top and the lower class at the bottom, experiencing their different gravitational laws.

Upside Down is particularly centered on two lovers who are kept apart by the dynamics of their planets and their societies. Their governments have banned any interaction between their two worlds. But the love between the two main characters, Adam and Eden, is strong. Thus, Adam finds a way to fight gravity in order to be with his love, despite the danger attached to his desires.

Upside Down’s storyline is based on a creative and intriguing premise, »
