Great Job, Internet!: Ian McKellen has some advice for Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway

3 March 2017 9:50 AM, PST | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

British thespian Ian McKellen is a man of practicality. Why complicate things with cocktail words and ambiguities when you can just, well, cut through all the bullshit? It’s like that scene in Extras, where he confides to Ricky Gervais’ Andy that the secret to acting is simply pretending to be the character you’re portraying.

After the Oscars screw-up heard ’round the world, McKellen reached out to Best Picture presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway via Twitter, where he gave them some simple and, well, practical advice.

Dear Faye and Warren:

Next time, do what I always do when presenting. Backstage, before you go on ... see image for more. pic.twitter.com/PxWHYVn8BR

Ian McKellen (@IanMcKellen) March 2, 2017

Sounds awfully simple, right? If it were, though, we wouldn’t have the hilarity that is Adele Dazeem, so maybe it’s advice best left ignored.

Film Review: ‘Table 19’

1 March 2017 7:00 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Table 19” is an under-imagined, overly-pleased-with-itself comedy about half a dozen “colorful characters” who meet while sharing a table at a wedding reception. The premise sounds like it has possibilities (Robert Altman, of course, set an entire movie at a wedding), but the strangers-at-a-table concept turns out to be a thin excuse to cobble together what might have been the pilot episode for a glibly forgettable TV series. This is the sort of movie in which the characters start off telling fibs and tossing off rim-shot jibes, but within 45 minutes they’ve become a makeshift “family” of eccentrics who’ve got each other’s backs. Almost everything that happens in “Table 19” rings cloyingly false. The movie wants to make you laugh and cry, but you may be too busy cringing.

In theory, it should be a redeeming feature that the movie stars Anna Kendrick, whose presence will certainly lend »

Ricky Gervais on Atheism, Donald Trump, and the Return of David Brent

1 February 2017 11:53 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

It’s been over 13 years since Ricky Gervais bade farewell to David Brent, the middling middle manager on the original U.K. version of “The Office” that launched his career. Since then, he’s had other successful series (“Extras,” “Derek”), dabbled in movies (“The Invention of Lying”), and sold out venues with his standup tour. Yet the character who considered himself “friend first, boss second…probably entertainer third” has never really gone away. “There wasn’t a day that went by where I wasn’t managing the estate of David Brent,” Gervais notes. “There were remakes around the world, I would get requests every day to show clips, or something would could up with licensing.”

After short appearances on the American version of “The Office” or at “Comic Relief,” Gervais has brought Brent back in full force with the release of “David Brent: Life on the Road.” Written and directed by Gervais, »

‘The Royal Tenenbaums’ Blu-ray Review

24 January 2017 2:01 AM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Stars: Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anjelica Huston, Luke Wilson | Written and Directed by Wes Anderson

The final part of Wes Anderson’s “Owen Wilson trilogy” (the last Wilson co-wrote) is a typically oddball family opera. From the opening scene we see the Anderson tropes: A muzaked cover of a classic rock tune (Hey Jude); an erudite narrator (Alec Baldwin) presenting a cast of quirky characters; meticulously stage-crafted framing; precision pans and zooms; and photography swathed in bold primary colours.

The Tenenbaum children were once destined for social excellence. Chas was a precocious business genius; Richie was a champion tennis player; and adopted daughter Margot was a promising playwright. Jump past their 20s, however, and we find that Chas (Ben Stiller) is a widower who’s so obsessed with his children’s safety that he’s forgotten how to live; Richie (Luke Wilson) threw away »

‘Pitch Perfect 3’ Comedy Contest: Elizabeth Banks Pulling Fans Into Movie Promos

9 January 2017 12:11 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Elizabeth Banks has launched a digital search for comical creators to help create marketing collateral for “Pitch Perfect 3.”

Banks’ WhoHaha female-focused internet comedy site has teamed with Universal Pictures on “Go Pitch Yourself,” a contest soliciting video submissions from digital creators who are aficionados of the “Pitch Perfect” franchise. This spring, five grand-prize winners will be flown to L.A. on an all-expenses-paid trip where they’ll participate in a weeklong “Digital Content Lab” about filmmaking and digital content strategy, with sessions led by Banks and execs from Universal and WhoHaha.

During the lab, the winners will produce a video with Banks tying into the “Pitch Perfect 3” marketing campaign — and, the studio says, those might be included with the Blu-ray and DVD releases of the film.

“Being a content creator is more than just finding views,” Banks said in announcing the initiative. “With ‘Go Pitch Yourself,’ we’re »
