Fox Mulder and Dana Scully both worked at the FBI as partners, a bond between them that led to their becoming lovers. But now they're out of the FBI and have begun new careers. Scully works as a staff physician at a Catholic hospital. Her focus these days is on a young boy with an incurable brain disease. Administration wants to give up on him. Scully, who feels a special bond with the boy, does not. Meanwhile, Mulder's focus is on clipping newspaper articles, throwing pencils into his ceiling and writing about the paranormal. Scully and Mulder are brought together as partners again when a special case requires Mulder's expertise and Scully is prevailed upon to convince him to help. The case involves a pedophile priest who claims he is having psychic visions regarding the whereabouts of a missing FBI agent. Written by

The two names above are Bowman and Gilligan, which can only be references to Rob Bowman (director of the first movie and several episodes) and Vince Gilligan (writer-producer of the show). Chris Carter thinks he can dump a trash script that was sitting in his TV-series-reject stockpile on die-hard XFile fans. There were at least 5 occasions during the film where I was questioning the logic of the story and by the end, was still waiting for explanations that never were delivered.
My opinions (no facts, just educated guesses!): 1) CC wanted to milk his cash cow without spending time crafting a new screenplay. 2) Because of the profit & success of the first film, either CC made sure his contract stated to leave him alone and not staunch his "creativity", or the studio gave CC carte blanche & never sent a "suit" (executive) to check on what he was doing. 3) Gillian & David D. got suckered into this - because they signed on to do a package deal (two or three films) and had no say on the script. 4) X-File fans will still turn out for another film, because they love the Mulder & Scully characters. I am very sorry to write such a diatribe, but it was extremely disappointing.
