Cool Video: Cinema 2009

25 December 2009 12:23 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Piggybacking a perhaps more spirited and tightly packed year in review video from about a week ago, here's a longer recap compilation that reaches wider and probably packs a bigger emotional wallop, which you might not expect from something like this.

One year, 342 movies. That's the thesis of Kees van Dijkhuizen's terrific high quality video, which includes movies you wouldn't expect to see here, like Killshot with Mickey Rourke and Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Coco Avant Chanel, but that is, after all, how a year in review should work. Hell, even Year One shows up.

I should also point out how well the music works together. There are a few songs providing the soundtrack here and they're all pretty good choices. It might not have been the best year for movies on the whole, but watching these seven minutes reminds me that a year with any movies is better than the alternative. »

The Hunt is On for Young Jack Ryan

5 December 2009 9:10 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

During a press conference for Invictus, producer Mace Neufeld spoke to the media about the next installment in Paramount's Jack Ryan franchise, which already consists of The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of All Fears.

Neufeld said that the new film will not be based on any of Tom Clancy's novels, but will instead be an original screenplay. Meanwhile, the hunt is on to find the actor who will play the next Jack Ryan...a young Jack Ryan; though the film will not be an origin story. Chris Pine is in talks for the role, though that's by no means finalized (it is a great choice, however).

"We pick [Ryan] up when he's on Wall Street," said Neufeld, "...[but] the Jack Ryan movies have never been action films. They're kind of 'thinking man's thrillers.' Jack is referred to as a 'water-walker' because »

'Shakespeare in Love' Helmer Circles 'My Fair Lady'

1 December 2009 7:50 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

There is still no solid agreement for Keira Knightley to take on one Miss Eliza Doolittle, but it looks like the remake of My Fair Lady may finally have found a director. One who is not Joe Wright. Variety reports that the helmer behind The Debt -- John Madden -- is currently in talks to direct the film. Seeing that The Debt hasn't come out yet, let's be more clear: The director behind Shakespeare in Love, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Proof, and Killshot is the guy circling this feature.

That should be pretty decent news for the film. While I can't say that his subsequent work has brought him the same acclaim, getting an Oscar nomination for Shakespeare proved that he's at his best when dealing with classic literary romance. And while I would've loved to see Baz Luhrmann take it on (he was previously linked to the shebang), I can't »

Chris Pine To Become Jack Ryan?

14 October 2009 8:11 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Apparently, I'm all about the Chris Pine news this week. It's been 7 years since we've seen CIA analyst Jack Ryan on the big screen, but our wait may finally be over.  Variety [1] is reporting that Paramount is in talks with Mr. James T. Kirk to reboot the franchise based on Tom Clancy's novels. Although talks have just started, it is expected that Pine will sign up.  The studio and producers are working with a new, original script by Hossein Amini (Four Feathers, Killshot). It's still pretty early and it's unsure if the franchise will get going before or after Pine stars in the next Star Trek film.  Pine would be the fourth actor to play Jack Ryan behind Ben Affleck, Harrison Ford and my personal favourite Alec Baldwin. Are you pining (hardy har har) for a new Jack Ryan film? [1] http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118009912.html?categoryid=13&cs=1

Paramount Pines for Jack Ryan

13 October 2009 9:45 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Actor Chris Pine (Star Trek) is presently in negotiations with Paramount Pictures to play CIA analyst Jack Ryan in a reboot of the franchise based on the successful Tom Clancy novels.

This effectively confirms that the new film will be a prequel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog, the studio and producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mace Neufeld are working with a script draft by Hossein Amini (Killshot), based on an original concept.

They are still deep in development and it is unclear whether Pine would make the Star Trek sequel before delving into the world of espionage as Jack Ryan.

If the deal is struck, Pine will be the fourth actor to play Ryan. Alec Baldwin originated the character in 1990's The Hunt for Red October, after which Harrison Ford took over the character in 1992's Patriot Games and 1994's Clear and Present Danger.

Mickey Rourke Will Play ‘The Ice Man’

24 September 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Mickey Rourke sure has enjoyed a great comeback, what with his Oscar-nominated (he should have won) performance in The Wrestler, his casting as the villain Whiplash in the highly-anticipated Iron Man 2, and his joining forces with Sly Stallone for the all-out macho man action pic, The Expendables (he also has a handful of other projects in the works).

And it looks like Rourke is adding yet another project to his schedule, as he’s reportedly landed the role of the infamous real-life mafia assassin known as The Ice Man. NYPost reports that Rourke will play the titular role of The Ice Man, in a film based on a book written by Philip Carlo. The book chronicles the life of the now deceased Richard Kuklinski, who was a notorious murderer and mafia contract killer who claimed to have killed over 200 people in a career spanning 30 years.

Sounds pretty dark, even for a badass like Rourke. »

Here comes another batch of bite-sized film review nuggets. This round-up of DVD reviews include analysis of immigration stories intersecting in ‘Crossing Over,’ a fantasy adventure called ‘Inkheart,’ girls and boys figuring each other out in ‘He’s Just Not That Into You,’ a Hollywood picture gone goofy, ergo ‘The Deal‘, a classic novel turned movie called ‘Killshot‘ all … in 140 characters or less.

Crossing Over Synopsis: Immigrants from around the world enter Los Angeles every day, with hopeful visions of a better life, but little notion of what that life may cost. Their desperate scenarios test the humanity of immigration enforcement officers.

Today We’re Totally Crushing On: Joseph Gordon-Levitt

6 August 2009 4:57 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The last time we were “Crushing On” someone, it was Ginny Weasley (Bonnie Wright) from the Harry Potter films. The “Crushing On” series focuses on one relatively unknown or underappreciated actor/actress that may not be popular with mainstream audiences (yet) but that we feel should get some exposure for their work. Today we continue our new semi-regular series “Crushing On” with a name that most people have heard but few people know anything about: Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

It’s really a shame that mainstream audiences haven’t had a chance to fully appreciate Jgl’s work. He has quite an extensive background in acting and is only 28 years old, but has been acting since he was 7 with his first TV debut, Stranger on My Land. For the next four years he played various roles in a gambit of TV shows: Family Ties, Murder She Wrote, China Beach, Quantum Leap and L.A. Law. »

(500) Days of Summer: A Smart Romantic Comedy

17 July 2009 1:44 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Believe or not there are some people in the world that Haven’T seen Transformers 2. Yes, I know it’s hard to believe - especially with TF2 raking in almost three quarters of a billion dollars worldwide - but it’s true! So what are these people willing watch if not the biggest blockbuster film of the summer? My guess is that they are part of the art house, indie-loving crowd and they were holding off for Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s new film, (500) Days of Summer.

We haven’t covered this film on Screen Rant yet, but better late than never. (500) Days of Summer looks to be a really good mid-summer date film, much like The Proposal last month, but with more subtle humor and insight, rather than the big laughs Green Lantern Deadpool Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock brought to the screen. Today we’ve got the trailer for (500) Days of Summer, »

Tom Clancy’s Next Movie: Rainbow Ghost Cell?

8 July 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

That headline is a total inside joke. If you haven’t played the Clancy video games, it probably doesn’t make much sense. “Rainbow Six,” “Ghost Recon” and “Splinter Cell” are all tremendously popular game franchises. They are also, as I argued earlier this week, a good reason why we can expect to see more Clancy on film in the near future.

The earlier post grew out of an Anne Thompson piece on Variety concerning the possibility of George Clooney stepping into Clancy’s Jack Ryan character, a role previously occupied by Alec Baldwin (”The Hunt for Red October”), Harrison Ford (”Patriot Games,” “Clear & Present Danger”) and Ben Affleck (”The Sum of All Fears”), respectively. Now Thompson is reporting that Paramount and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura are waiting on a script for something called “Untitled Tom Clancy Project,” a title which I imagine will change at some point.

Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan Update - New Script Almost Done

8 July 2009 11:50 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

With that story about George Clooney from last week, it seems as if Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan is back in the mainstream conscious once again. As we mentioned in that article, Paramount hired Killshot screenwriter Hossein Amini last year to write a new Jack Ryan screenplay for them to turn into a franchise. Anne Thompson (via Variety) provides a small update on the project, saying that Amini is due to turn in the first draft of an original screenplay currently called the Untitled Tom Clancy Project. Paramount is working with Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura to develop the feature but it's still very early on. We don't know much more about this, but I did hear from an anonymous tipster that Ryan Gosling has been Paramount's top choice for Jack Ryan for a few years now. However, Thompson did add that, "Yes, Clooney has been discussed for Jack Ryan." Obviously »

More Jack Ryan News: Untitled Reboot Script Due Soon

8 July 2009 10:30 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Just the other day there was a mention that George Clooney might be interested in taking up the mantle of Jack Ryan, the hero of Tom Clancy novels and films like The Hunt For Red October and Patriot Games. Now there's confirmation, via Anne Thompson, that Clooney's name is indeed in the mix. But more important, the Hossein Aimini script that was commissioned last year to reboot the franchise, currently just the Untitled Tom Clancy Project, should arrive shortly, and then Paramount will be able to make a decision about really moving forward. In December of last year, word came down that Killshot and Jude screenwriter Hossein Amini had been tasked by Paramount with scripting the revival of Jack Ryan's onscreen persona. As I mentioned the other day, this would be a full reboot, and the idea is to use an original plot rather than an adaptation of one of »

Cobra Commander Pops Up in a 'G.I. Joe' Trailer

6 July 2009 7:25 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Before we get to the good stuff, I have to say I've watched, I dunno, six or seven clips/trailers/commercials for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and am seriously unimpressed. At first it looked Ok, but how damn long is the Eiffel Tower scene going to last? It's in everything, so I gather it's a good 60% of the movie.

Now on to the highlight: We finally get to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who I never would have imagined as Cobra Commander. That might be a great bit of casting, although he was b-a-d playing evil for a good director in John Madden's Killshot, so maybe this goes the other way. Now, I say we get to see him, but that old saying about a picture lasting longer is true, which is why I've trapped Cobra Commander in his natural habitat for that image above.

Oh, the trailer is also in Japanese, »

DVD: Review: Killshot

2 June 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

The misbegotten Elmore Leonard adaptation Killshot slunk onto video-store shelves followed by an oily trail of bad press, toxic buzz, post-production tomfoolery, and abandoned theatrical release dates. Filming began in 2005, but after disastrous test screenings, the filmmakers went back to the drawing board. They cut out an entire subplot involving Johnny Knoxville as a corrupt deputy, and whittled the film down to a mere 84 minutes. It was all for naught: The film slipped in and out of a few theaters in early 2009 en route to a DVD burial.  A pre-Wrestler Mickey Rourke stars as a moody »

Killshot - DVD Review

2 June 2009 7:50 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Much was made of Mickey Rourke.s return with the Wrestler. However, Mick exercised his acting chops with this 2006 thriller where he played a hit man for hire from the Elmore Leonard novel. The Wrestler finally got the film out of the vault, but the acting is just as powerful. Blackbird (Mickey Rourke) is a hit man. He.s doing a job for the mob eliminating the elderly head of the family (Hal Holbrook in a cameo) for the younger Turks who want to takeover the organization. He plans on this being his last job and then retirement, but things have a way of not working out for Blackbird. He has a policy of killing everyone who has »

DVD Review: ‘Killshot’ With Mickey Rourke, Diane Lane Finally Gets Released

1 June 2009 6:30 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – How does a movie with Oscar-nominated leads, a prominent director, beloved source material, and an excellent supporting cast get delayed for so long that it inevitably gets quietly shuffled off to DVD? Well, if history tells us anything, having a complicated and troubled project in the Weinstein Company archives doesn’t help a movie like “Killshot,” an action thriller that has its flaws but none so big that it deserved such an unusual and lackluster fate.

DVD Rating: 1.0/5.0 Mickey Rourke, Diane Lane, Thomas Jane, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Rosario Dawson started shooting “Killshot” with director John Madden (“Shakespeare in Love”) in 2005. Then the dreaded Weinstein test audience process began. Entire characters (including one played by Johnny Knoxville) were excised from the film and “Killshot” had more release date delays than nearly any movie in history.

Of course, everyone moved on and Mickey Rourke became a star again with “The Wrestler”. So, »

Killshot

Sometimes a film comes with big names and notable filmmakers, but just can't get more than a barely-there release on the big screen. This is one of those films. An adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel about a couple embroiled in a mess with some sketchy types, this puppy comes from Shakespeare in Love director John Madden, and stars the likes of Diane Lane, Mickey Rourke, Thomas Jane, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Johnny Knoxville, and Rosario Dawson. EFilmCritic calls it "messy and unfocused." Skip it.

Now Jessica Biel might be lamenting her beauty and how that affects her career, but not so long ago she was taking it off for her work. This is that Christmas drama with the stripper (Biel), an ex-priest, an ex-con, and a mortician. It is, however, also (slightly) notable for being the film where Patrick Swayze plays »
