Storyline

Vince is a writer who suddenly decides to visit his old college friend Matt (who knows more than a bit about map-reading) to join him on an expedition. They both set off to walk the Roman road from Chichester to London, but it doesn't take long for it to become apparent that they're being chased by a mystery man in a fast car. It seems Vince has something in his backpack that someone wants very badly indeed. Written by Hemuset

funny, touching, well-acted; pure entertainment

Vince is a failed writer. he hasn't seen his friend Matt for years. suddenly, he turns up on Matt's doorstep in the hope of rekindling his friend's passion for roman roads. Matt is confused and suspicious when Vince offers to walk a roman road with him (Vince never used to be interested in Matt's roman obsession), but Vince says he is researching an article. Matt accepts the offer, little knowing that Vince has a more sinister motive for going on this trip.

initially, i only watched "roman road" because Alan Davies was in it. i had seen him in the comedy quiz-show; "QI", and that had prompted me to watch his stand-up tapes. he is hilarious, but i didn't get to see him doing any proper acting until i saw him in this. he really is quite good, despite Stephen fry's comments about his lack of ability in QI.

i recently saw john Gordon Sinclair as Leo bloom in the west end production of Mel brooks' "the producers". i have never laughed so much in my life. when i got back i rummaged around and dug out roman road, then i watched it again with "the producers" in mind. i saw Sinclair's performance in a completely new light. he is an amazingly versatile actor.

in conclusion, roman road is a great piece of work. it is witty, charming, funny, but also deals with some serious issues in society today. the score is also top notch, if a little overused. this comedy drama has it all, including a truly award-winning performance from john Gordon Sinclair, and a healthy measure of humour, ably provided by Alan Davies. the chemistry between these two actors is what makes this film what it is; pure entertainment.
