Ninja: Review

22 December 2009 5:06 PM, PST | 24framespersecond.net | See recent 24FramesPerSecond news »

Director: Isaac Florentine. Review: Tim Irwin. It’s hard to believe that two movies with the word Ninja in the title came out in the same year, and were both made in the same country. Indeed, while Ninja Assassin [reviewed here] went over the top with CGI blood and absurd violence, Ninja feels a little more credible in terms of story and characters. Granted, its primary ninja looks more like a cyborg assassin or Batman than a martial arts expert, but don’t let that detract from the experience. Scott Adkins stars as Casey Bowman, an American who has grown up in a dojo his whole life. I wasn’t familiar with Adkins either, but a quick glance at his filmography turns up small parts in blockbusters like X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Bourne Ultimatum, and the lesser-known Unleashed (starring Jet Li). Casey has spent his life studying martial arts, and as time »

The event was in aid of the Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation, a charity that helps people with disabilities to increase independence and improve life skills.

The event was named the Pinewood Legends evening for a reason. Invited along as guests of the Foundation were:

Lutz Wants In On Bourne Franchise

7 December 2009 11:21 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Twilight star Kellan Lutz is angling for a role alongside Matt Damon in the upcoming Bourne sequel, because he's desperate to show off his action skills.

The actor admits he's been an action man since he was a kid and was often caught playing with fire - literally.

He says, "When I was younger I was a pyromaniac, just lighting everything on fire. So before all the crazy reality (TV) shows came out, I'd make my own stuff and film it and have fun getting hurt."

Lutz is confident his daredevil past has prepared him well for a part in the fourth installment of the Bourne franchise, and he's appealing to casting directors to get in touch.

He adds, "The Bourne franchise, that'd be fun. Jason Bourne is a real action hero, he gets hurt, he gets cut up and shot up, so I think it would be cool to do one day. I've been saying it enough, so come on!"

The future of the next Bourne film has been left in limbo following the recent departure of filmmaker Paul Greengrass, who directed 2004's The Bourne Supremacy and its 2007 follow-up The Bourne Ultimatum.

But Lutz's fans won't have to wait too long to see him in action - the star recently wrapped filming on Twilight sequel Eclipse, in which he was allowed to perform his own stunts.

He explains, "After all my nagging in the first and the second movies, the Twilight producers let me do most of my own stunts in the third movie so that was fun."

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is due for release in June. »

Matt Damon, Morgan Freeman Interview, Invictus

6 December 2009 8:00 PM, PST | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

From director Clint Eastwood, “Invictus” tells the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) joined forces with the captain of South Africa’s rugby team, Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon), to help unite their country.

Newly elected President Mandela knows his nation remains racially and economically divided in the wake of apartheid. Believing he can bring his people together through the universal language of sport, Mandela rallies South Africa’s underdog rugby team as they make an unlikely run to the 1995 World Cup Championship match.

MoviesOnline sat down this weekend with Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman at the Los Angeles press day for “Invictus” to talk about their new film. Here’s what they had to tell us about how they researched their roles, what it was like working with Clint Eastwood, and why this was an important story to tell:

No More Bourne for Matt Damon Without Paul Greengrass

5 December 2009 2:23 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Only a few days ago, it was announced that Paul Greengrass, director of the second and third movies in the Bourne series, would not be returning to direct a fourth. It was unknown at that time how this would affect plans for another movie, but it now appears that Greengrass' permanent departure could mean the end of the Bourne franchise altogether.

In a recent interview with MTV, series star Matt Damon said, "I woldn't do it with anyone else." However, Damon was optimistic that Greengrass would return if they could find the right story.

I think it's gonna happen some day. We just got to get a script and we don't have one. So, embarking on something, you know, and aiming at a release date without any story would just be too risky. And, we don't wanna risk ... you know, we really love it! We love the character and we »

As millions of moviegoers have learned over the past decade, Jason Bourne is a lethal superspy with deadly hands and an empty memory. Recruited, trained and left for dead, he has spent three hit movies searching for the answers behind his true identity. These days, fans of the "Bourne" franchise are keeping their fingers crossed for a fourth installment — but recent developments have left them nearly as confused as their hero.

In an interview with MTV News on Friday (December 4), series star Matt Damon said he has no doubt that he'll one day be killing enemies with hardcover books and ballpoint pens again soon — as long as the studio agrees to a package deal.

"Yeah, I'm less nervous about it [than most people]," Damon told us. »

For years, we've been promised a big-budget movie about the Colombian drug baron Pablo Escobar. Various rival Escobar projects have been racing to complete their financing. Various other actors have also been linked with the role of notorious drugs boss, among them Javier Bardem. Paul Greengrass is Done with Bourne, Now What?

Rumors had been swirling since late last week, and this week Variety has confirmed that director Paul Greengrass is leaving the Bourne franchise. In the confirmation, the studio (Universal) released the following statement from the director: "I will always be grateful to have been the caretaker to Jason Bourne over the course of The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. I'm very proud of those films and feel they express everything I most passionately believe about the possibility of making quality movies in the mainstream. My decision to not return a third time as director is simply about feeling the call for a different challenge. There's been no disagreement with Universal Pictures. The opportunity to work with the Bourne family again is a difficult thing to pass up, but we have discussed this together and they have been incredibly understanding and supportive. The Naughts: The Actor of the '00s

3 December 2009 10:06 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Quietly and unexpectedly, Matt Damon has become the premier Hollywood actor of the past decade. He's lent his minutely constructed, surprisingly athletic performances to the films of directors Steven Soderbergh, Gus Van Sant, Paul Greengrass, Martin Scorsese and Clint Eastwood, a roster that's not coincidentally produced some of the most vital and successful films of the past ten years.

His remarkable career isn't simply a matter of a good agent. It's all in the manner in which he so carefully adapts his particular skills to the roles.

Damon's commitment is displayed on his body, which he relentlessly crafts to the specifications of each character -- he's almost the anti-movie star in his physical malleability. Take a look at how he changes from "The Bourne Identity" in 2002 to the Farrelly Brothers' "Stuck On You," a year later. In the former, he carved himself down to muscle and bone, a tightly packed »

Greengrass Confirms Bourne Exit

3 December 2009 8:16 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Director Paul Greengrass has confirmed he's walked away from the upcoming Bourne sequel, but has played down rumours the film is in trouble.

The moviemaker took charge of the action franchise with 2004's The Bourne Supremacy, returning with The Bourne Ultimatum in 2007.

He recently teamed up with the series' star Matt Damon to put together plans for a fourth film, but the project was reportedly thrown into chaos when Greengrass quit, amid whispers of a disagreement over the script.

Greengrass has now spoken out to dispel rumours of a fall out with bosses at Hollywood studio Universal, and allay fears the project has been put on ice.

He says in a statement, "You won't find a more devoted supporter of the Bourne franchise than me. I will always be grateful to have been the caretaker to Jason Bourne over the course of The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. I'm very proud of those films.

"My decision to not return a third time as director is simply about feeling the call for a different challenge. There's been no disagreement with Universal Pictures. The opportunity to work with the Bourne family again is a difficult thing to pass up, but we have discussed this together and they have been incredibly understanding and supportive.

"Jason Bourne existed before me and will continue, and I hope to remain involved in some capacity as the series moves on." »

Pass notes No 2,694: Jason Bourne

2 December 2009 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Director Paul Greengrass has pulled out of the next Bourne movie. Will star Matt Damon follow?

Age: 39.

Appearance: For the moment, he looks exactly like the actor Matt Damon.

What a tremendous coincidence. Not really. Damon has played the fictional former CIA assassin, the main character in a series of novels by Robert Ludlum, on screen in three films: The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum.

Didn't see them. Any good? All three were critically acclaimed and commercially successful, particularly the latter two, directed by Paul Greengrass. Jason Bourne was heralded as James Bond's successor.

Well, then – they should make some more. They are – a fourth film is due to be released in 2011 — but sadly Greengrass won't be directing.

How come? It's "simply about feeling the call for a different challenge", said Greengrass. "There's been no disagreement with Universal Pictures."

There has, though, hasn't there? I can »
