Re-inventing a classic Thai ghost story into a goofball comedy romance, seasoned director Banjong Pisanthanakun has scored a huge box office hit in his native Thailand. While unlikely to do the same kind of business outside South East Asia, Pee Mak Phrakanong is nevertheless an enjoyable and frequently laugh-out-loud crowd pleaser. Easily the most famous and successful horror filmmaker to emerge from Thailand in recent years, Banjong Pisanthanakun has scored a number of critical and commercial successes on the international stage with films such as Shutter and Alone. He recently directed a segment of Ant Timpson and Tim League's horror anthology The ABCs of Death (N is for Nuptials) and has now delivered the most successful Thai film of all time at the domestic box office. Pee Mak...

Director: Various. Review: Adam Wing. Stephen R. Covey once said, “Strength lies in differences, not in similarities.” That’s certainly the case with The ABCs of Death, a 2012 American anthology horror film produced by Ant Timpson and Tim League. Their plan was simple, one movie consisting of 26 short films, shot by up and coming directors from 15 countries. Each director was assigned a letter of the alphabet and given free rein in choosing a word to create a story involving death. While the individual chapters were always going to be a little hit and miss, depending on your taste in horror, the quality of filmmakers is undeniable. Marcel Sarmiento (Deadgirl), Noboru Iguchi (The Machine Girl), Yudai Yamaguchi (Tamami), Ti West (The Innkeepers), Banjong Pisanthanakun (Shutter), Adam Wingard (A Horrible Way to Die) and our very own Ben Wheatley (Kill List) lend their skills to a disjointed, occasionally offensive, often engaging and highly recommended movie going experience. »

Directed by Ben Wheatley, Simon Rumley, Jake West, Lee Hardcastle, Ti West, Jason Eisener, Kaare Andrews, Bruno Forzani, Noboru Iguchi, Jorge Michel Grau, Srdjan Spasojevic, Adam Wingard and many more…
The ABCs of Death is perhaps the most ambitious anthology film ever conceived with productions spanning fifteen countries and featuring segments directed by over two dozen of the world’s leading talents in contemporary genre film, including the directors of House of the Devil, Hobo with a Shotgun, A Serbian Film, Tokyo Gore Police, and You’re Next as well as four homegrown British directors – Ben Wheatley (Sightseers), Simon Rumley (Red, White & Blue), Jake West (Doghouse) and Leeds based Lee Hardcastle, who with his claymation short, won a competition to be the final director (and whose short is one of the highlights of the film).

Horror comedies such as Pee Mak Phrakanong could be hot exports for Thailand's rapidly improving film industry
The flood of Chinese domestic blockbusters since the turn of the year is the strongest hint yet that the country is capable of being a Hollywood for Asia, and setting the cinema agenda for the region. But it's not the sole player around. At the end of March Thai audiences flocked to see horror comedy Pee Mak Phrakanong – based on the Mae Nak folktale about a man who returns from war and unwittingly settles back in with the ghost of his wife, who has died in childbirth. It had the second biggest opening (21.2m baht/£478,000) ever for a Thai film, and with over 300m baht to date, it is closing on the all-time box-office record (550m baht) held by 2001's war epic The Legend of Suriyothai.

While the horror genre is definitely kicking ass here in the States, it's great to know that it's flourishing globally as well. Case in point: the Thai horror comedy Pee Mak Phra Khanong, aka Pee Mak, from Shutter and Phobia director Banjong Pisanthanakun.
According to 24 Frames Per Second, the flick has apparently just blown a big hole in Thai box office records since its release on March 28, 2013. Thus far the film has raked in over 300 million baht, which equates to around 10.3 million dollars Us. So what do you say we take a look at the trailer that comes complete with English subtitles? Mario Maurer and Davika Hoorne star.
Synopsis
In the Rattanakosin Kingdom, Mak (Mario Maurer) leaves his pregnant wife, Nak (Davika Hoorne), to join the war and meets four soldiers who become his best friends. During this time, his wife Nak struggles to give birth to their baby.

Banjong Pisanthanakun’s (who directed one of Thailand’s best ever and internationally successful horror films ‘Shutter’) latest foray in fright flicks aka Pee Mak Phrakanong has taken a different turn with very much a comedic theme, but that doesn’t seem to have put off local cinemas goers because its apparently just blown a big hole in Thai box office records. Seeing as it’s causing quite a stir, we thought we’d best take a look, and in our wanderings we’ve turned up the full trailer which some bright spark has very helpfully fan subbed. Pee Mak trailer »

Apparently the staff at Twitch aren't the only ones who have been awaiting Shutter and Alone co-director Banjong Pisanthanakun's horror comedy Pee Mak Phrakanong. Nope. Tucked away in a review at Wise Kwai is the note that Pee Mak has posted the second largest opening of a Thai film ever at the local box office, it's 21 million baht opening day take second only to the original Ong Bak, with the 100 million line crossed on the fourth day - meaning averages actually went up through the first week as word of mouth spread. So, yes, apparently the film is quite good though it sounds as though some of the comedy might be quite region-specific.Beyond the simple fact that we've been fans of Banjong here...

Director Banjong Pisanthanakun is responsible for putting together a number of quality motion pictures over the past few years. In addition to the “Phobia” films, the filmmaker crafted the genuinely creepy 2004 horror outing “Shutter.” Considering the latter is one of my favorite horror films, I’m always excited to see what Banjong does next. Enter “Pee Mak,” a horror/comedy that really doesn’t sound all that funny on paper. In fact, the international trailer embedded below isn’t altogether hilarious. However, I’ve been told the movie is supposed to have comedic elements, so I’m going to take these folks at their word. Here’s a ridiculously long synopsis: During the beginning of the Rattanakosin Dynasty, many Thai men were drafted to serve in the war. “Pee Mak” or “Mak” (Mario Maurer) was no exception and had to leave his pregnant wife to join the fight. Intrigued by the Thai trailers for the latest from Banjong Pisanthanakun (Shutter, Alone, Phobia, Phobia 2)but wish you could understand what the hell the were saying? Wish granted. The international teaser for the film has been released, English subtitles included. This one plays things largely straight, the only indication of the comedy element coming right at the end. You want an extended synopsis to chew on as well? You got it:During the beginning of the Rattanakosin Dynasty, many Thai men were drafted to serve in the war. "Pee Mak" or "Mak" (Mario Maurer) was no exception and had to leave his pregnant wife to join the fight. While at war, he met, saved, and formed a close bond with four fellow soldiers: "Ter" (Freud-Nattapong Chartpong),...

A young man goes to war and upon his return unwittingly weds a ghost. That's the setup for Banjong Pisanthanakun's Pee Mak Phrakanong, a comedic spin on the popular Thai Mae Nak ghost story. We've been following this one closely for a good while now - find links to posters and earlier teasers below - for good reason: As co-director of Shutter and Alone, Pisanthanakun is one of the leaders of Thai horror and he's making his return here to the genre that made his name, albeit throwing in a comic twist. With the Thai release edging up soon a full trailer - about twice the length of the previous teaser, and featuring a lot more of the story - has just arrived. Banjong is back! We brought the first posters for the new horror comedy from Banjong Pisanthanakun - the Thai director who built his name on the back of horror hits Shutter, Alone and Phobia - and the first trailer for his new horror comedy Pee Mak Phrakanong has just followed. An inversion of the popular Mae Nak ghost story - itself the subject of several films - fans will be glad to see the quartet of actors who anchored Pisanthanakun's Phobia shorts here as well. Thai director Banjong Pisanthanakun is getting back to his roots. The helmer first broke onto the scene as one half of the duo responsible for 2004 breakout horror hit Shutter, a success quickly followed by 2007 chiller Alone. Pisanthanakun and directing partner Parkpoom Wongpoom were the hottest things going in a generally boiling Asian horror scene at the time but, strangely, neither has directed a horror oriented feature since. Both halves of the duo turned in horror shorts in the Phobia and Phobia 2 horror anthologies, the latter of which is the last time Wongpoom appeared on screen at all. Pisanthanakun? He wrote and directed a hit romcom in 2010, and turned up this past year with a segment in The ABCs of Death but...
