Zlatina has grown up in an institution for abandoned children. So has Lechko, her younger follower. At a fun fair, at the age of twelve, she shows her talent for shooting. The same day a group of boys plans to rape her. Zlatina manages to avert the rape by offering herself to the boarding house supervisor. When she grows up and leaves the institution, her behavior abides by the conviction that one has to struggle daily for one's survival as animals do; that friendship, love, and other good things happen in soap operas only. The life of Zlatina takes a different turn when a former inmate from the boarding house, Nayden, now an instructor at a shooting gallery, is so impressed by her talent for shooting that he takes her under his guardianship. He trains her and educates her like Pygmalion. And falls in love with her. However, Zlatina is suspicious of his selflessness and fears the inequality of their relationship. A criminal accident confirms her scares. As she seeks to start life anew... Written by Georgi Djulgerov <georgidjul1943@gmail.com>

An outstanding East European film from a veteran Bulgarian film director Gyorgi Dyulgerov
12 January 2009 | by (FIPRESCI/Cinema of the world) – See all my reviews

Leydi Zi is a brilliant coming of age drama directed by one of the most creative Bulgarian film makers Gyorgi Dyulgerov. This film is different from his former works as most of his famous films of the past were made under the communist era.Leydi Zi can be termed as a mature cinematographic experience in the history of Bulgarian cinema especially in the context of post communist free market era of capitalist Bulgaria. The fact that it was made using ever growing digital video technique speaks a lot about its accessibility at various film festivals. This film succeeds as it is an altogether different Bulgarian film by being one of those rare East European films which probes the issue of what it is to be a Gypsy and be able to live with dignity in Bulgarian society.Leydi Zi is a multi layered auteur film which offers viewers glimpses of a hard to define love story, plight of orphans, boxing champions in Eastern Europe. All this is shown by making a good use of soothing music including many foot tapping songs from Bulgarian folklore.A truly great film to have been made in Eastern Europe.
