There are certain films that really capture a feeling and a moment in time and this is one of them. In this case it's the feeling of being in your twenties, knowing you have missed the boat that goes to where you always wanted to go, and having to accept it. And the fact it was shot in 2000 gives this even more poignancy. It is about a group of friends stuck in a town, which itself seems to be stuck in a time warp. Most of them have given up their dreams and have become content in their eventless lives, except for the two main characters played by Bell and Gordon. She has managed to grasp life and moved on. He wants to desperately but thinks he owes it to the memory of his dead dad to stay. What we end up with is a charming tale that effortlessly blends comedy with tragedy.
The film is stylishly and atmospherically shot on Super 8, with a relatively low budget. It is reminiscent of the early works of Jarmusch and Smith (Kevin), but manages to translate middle-America into the North of England with great results. It's like Dead Man meets Carry On Camping. And who wants more than that? Not me. No, not me.
