Red Sonja Will Have to Wait For Conan

31 December 2009 6:01 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Rose McGowan revealed in November that she thinks the adaptation of Red Sonja will "start filming again in maybe a year," but it looks like she and producer Robert Rodriguez will likely have to wait longer than that. In an interview with ComicBookResources, Luke Lieberman, a Red Sonja comic book writer and executive producer for the movie, revealed that the Conan reboot is shooting first.

There are a few things brewing, but it looks like they are going to shoot Conan first, in the early spring.

The Marcus Nispel-directed reboot of Conan has yet to choose its leading man, though the part is rumored to be between X2: X-Men United's Daniel Cudmore and Terminator Salvation's Arnold Schwarznegger-body double Roland Kickinger.

Sr Pick: Cool Illustrated Disney/Marvel Mash-Up

31 December 2009 3:49 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

One of the biggest stories of 2009 came our way back in August when Walt Disney announced it was acquring Marvel. Immediately after the story broke, we put together a comprehensive report on what the merger meant for our favorite superheroes and comic book icons.

While there was some initial fear that Disney might try to sanitize the darker content from Marvel’s properties, we (along with most of you readers) ultimately came to the agreement that Disney wouldn’t try to fix what wasn’t broken, and that the merger would be a great thing for Marvel and a good thing for comic-inspired movies overall.

Of course, after we dissected the nitty gritty business details and the potential ramifications of the acquisition, we spent some time sharing the fun stuff, like these amusing new takes on classic Disney and Marvel characters and this hilarious musical edition of “I’m a Marvel… »

Mad Man's Dinner with 2009: The List to End All Lists

Mad Man Dan And His Dinner With 2009

Editor’s Note:  To be honest, I’m not a list guy.  I think they’re trite, unimaginative, and when I look at the other horror sites, their lists are all generally the same.  Sure, there may be some movement between what’s #3 on one site’s list and #4 on another, but must I see the same 10 or 20 flicks from the last year or decade, best or worst, ad nauseam?  So when Mike and I sat down a few weeks back, we agreed not to do the same, humdrum lists.

And then Mad Man Dan came into the picture.

Bringing his uniquely psychotic perspective to the whole idea of lists, then blowing up that idea and subverting it brought a fresh angle to lists.  And so I proudly present Mad Man Dan Price’s Dinner with 2009.  We don’t censor the Mad Man »

Discuss: Your Favorite Movie Novelizations and Tie-ins

30 December 2009 5:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Wandering through bookstores with my parents as a child, I only ever picked up two things: Goosebumps and movie novelizations. And while nary a day goes by that doesn't find me devoting an hour or two to debating the literary merits of the illustrious R.L. Stine, my adult life has been largely movie novelization (and tie-in) free. Until recently, that is, when I got around to reading Greg Cox's Terminator Salvation tie-in novel Cold War.

His storyline, which expands the Terminator canon (as modified by Salvation) by alternating between the story of a Russian submarine captain who gave the command to launch the nukes on judgment day and a John Connor idolizing member of the resistance in 2018, was pretty much on par with my memory of novelizations from my childhood, until I got to a section that featured an early Terminator model fighting a bear, which I think we »

2009: The Truffles – The HeyUGuys Awards

30 December 2009 2:32 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

With the proliferation of Top Tens and Best Of lists on the internet at this time of year we wanted to try something a little different.

2009 was an important year for the business of cinema; games were changed with the acquiescence of audiences to the notion of 3D, low budgets met with large returns, old franchises spawned reboots and rebakes with varying success, the British film industry remained strong and gave us some bright new stars in our sky.

We asked our writers to come up with an alternative set of awards which would honour those films, directors and actors who made 2009 such an enjoyable year. Strong emotions are rendered in strong language, be warned if words offend.

So, here now, I present to you our awards for 2009 – The Truffles.

2009 meant, for me, the respectable return to sci-fi.  Star Trek, District 9, Moon and now Avatar showed that sci-fi »

The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond (review)

30 December 2009 8:47 AM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

There’s retro, and then there’s better left safely in the past. Or perhaps it’s just that the long forgotten and previously unproduced Tennessee Williams play this disjointed and ultimately histrionic drama is based on demanded a more subtle, more nuanced, more historically attentive approach. Bryce Dallas Howard (Terminator Salvation) is assured enough as a 1920s heiress trying to live down her landowner father’s terrible reputation amidst the catty rich folk of her Mississippi-and-Memphis society, but actress turned firsttime filmmaker Jodie Markell is at a loss as to how to properly contextualize her life. It seems like a deliberate joke, for instance, when Howard’s wannabe bohemian latches onto her father’s farmhand (the always appealing Chris Evans: Push) as an appropriate escort to the debutante parties she’s obligated to attend -- it sounds like she’s thumbing her nose at the snobs she’s »

Sam Worthington vs. Ryan Reynolds for Flash Gordon?

29 December 2009 5:07 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

News on a new Flash Gordon movie has been scarce and we’ve not heard of any official developments since nearly a year and a half ago when Neil Moritz acquired the rights to the film and Breck Eisner was picked to direct. That changes this week as rumors surface of who is being looked at to play the lead role. Hollyscoop is reporting that an insider of theirs informed them that Sam Worthington and Ryan Reynolds are up for the role of Flash against two others.

For those unfamiliar with the classic sci-fi tale, the story of Flash Gordon takes place when our planet is hit with a meteor strike. We find out through the story that these meteors are weapons from the planet Mongo sent by Ming the Merciless, their evil ruler. Flash Gordon and friends make their way to the planet and adventure ensues.

Congrats go out to those of you who painstakingly watched the New Moon trailer, like, 10,000 times in a row, because you helped it become the most watched trailer of 2009! Yahoo Movies has released their annual list of the most-watched trailers of the year, and coming in at number one is, not surprisingly, The Twilight Saga: New Moon. At a close second was Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, followed by 2012, Terminator Salvation, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Star Trek, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, Avatar and then Pixar’s Up. Nowhere to be found on this list was Where the Wild Things Are, which was probably the most critically celebrated trailer of the year, capped off by a magical remix of Arcade Fire’s “Wake...

I Previously revealed here on The Geek Files that the script for Captain America was done and filming would begin in summer 2010.

Director Joe Johnston is "readying for a June start", according to a new report on Fangoria.

We must now be getting closer to news on casting, with numerous rumours and suggestions, including a list of contenders here on The Geek Files.

Fans have come up with many names, recently including Ryan McPartlin (pictured below), who reportedly lost out on the lead role in Superman Returns to Brandon Routh and plays Devon 'Captain Awesome' Woodcomb in Chuck.

Meanwhile, Twilight actor Kellan Lutz and Chuck star Zachary Levi have each expressed an interest in the role of the supersoldier.

A popular choice has been Jensen Ackles, who won a poll on The Geek Files. The calls from fans turned into rumours he had been officially approached. But the actor said: »

Top 10 Science Fiction Films of 2009

This year was a pretty good year for Scifi films and despite some disappointments I must admit that 2009 was a pretty good year for scifi film fans young and old with a nice mix of films to suit all tastes.

Two films that did not make my list because they did not play anywhere near me were The Road and Moon.  Both films looked truly fantastic and were high on my list to watch but alas the distributors released the film very poorly so only the critics and a select group of film fans got to see both films. I am sure that they both would have made my top list if I had a chance to see them.

So with that said and done here are the 10 Best Scifi Films of 2009 as I see it.

I think James Cameron best described Terminator Salvation when he said that it was good, but it lacked a certain Je ne sais quoi. Yahoo Unveils the Top Ten Most-Viewed Trailers of 2009

Yahoo did this last year (get the list here) and it makes for a pretty good look back as well as shows just how powerful the Internet has become in terms of movie promotion.

Last year's #1 most viewed trailer was The Dark Knight, which is none-too-surprising. Again, this year's films aren't exactly all that surprising, but their places on the list may be. I laughed a little when I saw #8 and the trailer that took the #1 slot this year may surprise a few folks. According to Yahoo, the two most popular videos each nabbed over 20 million views. Can you guess which ones they were?

With that question in mind, all of the trailers on Yahoo's list have been included across the next four pages... Enjoy!

Yahoo! Movies Lists the 10 Most-Watched Trailers of 2009

28 December 2009 11:20 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Yahoo! Movies has listed the top 10 most streamed trailers from their site in the past year.  They’re all blockbuster movies except for one.  You’ll know which one it is and after you see the trailer, you should know that the movie is available on Netflix “Watch Instantly” and you should add it to your queue.

But since it’s mostly blockbuster movies, there aren’t a lot of surprises.  Of course, sometimes Yahoo! Movies gets an exclusive trailer and sometimes Apple.com gets it.  Since they’re tracking video streaming numbers, their list may not match Apple’s (if Apple ever released a list, which I doubt they will).  Also, keep in mind that this isn’t a list of the year’s best trailer, just the ones that got the most hits.  If you want a countdown of the best trailers, come back later today when I’ll list my top five. »

Top 25 Movies of 2009 Introduction, Honorable Mentions and Movies #21 - 25

What's your overall opinion of the movies of 2009? I ask because moving into December I would have called it a downer year, and if you base your opinion of a year's worth of movies on the blockbusters of the year you may be a bit mixed. While films such as Star Trek, District 9 and Avatar found fans all around the world, films such as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Terminator Salvation, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, Angels and Demons and Watchmen were met with mixed-to-highly-negative reviews from critics and filmgoers alike. A lot of money was made, but I think we all know money doesn't always translate to quality.

There were some out of the blue surprises such as The Hangover and Paranormal Activity and Pixar again impressed us all with Up. Personally, it's the smaller to mid-level films »
