When the police discover the body of a man frozen in a meat truck, they think they have a case of people smuggling. The man had a false British passport in his possession and his death had similarities to a previous smuggling operation gone wrong. However the autopsy reveals that he was actually strangled. They also find a page from a Koran that proves to be extremely valuable. The Immigration authorities show little interest in Lynley and Havers' murder investigation. Lynley is under a great deal of stress, particularly with respect to his failed marriage and he is accused of stepping over the line with the result that he faces a disciplinary hearing over his conduct. Lynley and Havers are called in when the body of a Jordanian man is found frozen in a meat truck. Originally it seems like human trafficking; the man has a phony British passport, and the crime fits a past smuggling crime. But according to the autopsy, the man was strangled, and he has a page from the Golden Koran, which is very valuable.

The case becomes one of not only murder, but tracking down this valuable Koran, which will lead them to the killer.

Interesting Lynley, which ends the season with a cliffhanger.

Lynley is in a pretty foul mood during a good deal of this as Havers tries to hold him together. He's hurting from his separation from Helen.

Good, and a good mystery.
