Disney's Pinocchio Live-Action Movie Targets James Bond Director

Sam Mendes is in talks to take on Disney's live-action adaptation of Pinocchio. The monster box office success of Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book is sure to have been a deciding factor to continue rehashing the animated stories for Disney. The live-action adaptation of The Lion King is in the works and now the long rumored live-action Pinocchio may have found a director. The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Mulan are rumored to be coming next from the Mouse House.

Deadline reports that Mendes (American Beauty, Spectre) is currently in very early talks to direct the live-action Pinocchio for Disney. We'll take this news with a grain of salt because about a year ago it was reported that Mendes was in early talks to direct a live-action remake of James and the Giant Peach, which has yet to come into fruition. But it will be pretty interesting to

James Bond Director Sam Mendes Stirs Franchise

James Bond Director Sam Mendes Stirs Franchise
Here’s a theory: If not for Sam Mendes, Universal never would’ve entrusted an indie greenhorn like Colin Trevorrow to direct “Jurassic World,” nor would George Lucas have dreamed of handing the reins of his “Star Wars” franchise to the likes of Rian Johnson (“Brick”).

While hardly your typical indie director by origin, British-born Mendes, who is receiving the John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Excellence in Directing, was a bold choice to tackle “Skyfall,” the 23rd film in the Eon-produced James Bond franchise — and one of the few to be overseen by a helmer selected on the strength of his dramatic directing chops — resulting in $1.1 billion worldwide box office, the Bond series’ highest-grossing film.

The tendency with such franchise assignments — from Bond to “Star Wars” to the “Jurassic Park” series — has long been to pick journeymen helmers, favoring those lacking an authorial imprimatur who excel at the technical side of things: specifically,

Alan Cumming Developing 1980s-Set Dark Comedy For Showtime

Alan Cumming Developing 1980s-Set Dark Comedy For Showtime
Showtime is developing a comedy project to star Alan Cumming as colorful New York City restaurateur Florent Morellet.

“Florent” is set in the mid-1980s against the backdrop of the AIDS crisis. Morellet rose to prominence in that era with the popular restaurant Florent that drew a broad range of clientele, from cops to foodies to literati. The eatery helped revitalize the city’s Meatpacking district and became a hub for gay rights and AIDS activists. Morellet was famously open about his own HIV-positive status, posting his T-cell counts on a board alongside the restaurant’s daily specials.

Cumming would be in second position on “Florent” to his gig on CBS’ “The Good Wife,” which this year earned him his third Emmy nomination for the role of political strategist Eli Gold.

Patricia Resnick (“Mad Men”) is writing the script and is exec producing with director Rosemary Rodriguez. Jonathan Baruch and
