The first of the American Pie spin-offs proves to be a rather enjoyable farce. Despite being dreaded by die hard fans of the original films (as most of the original cast would not be starring), it turns out to be better than expected and is a solid start to the spin-off series.
The film, titled American Pie Presents: Band Camp, follows one of Stifler's younger brothers, Matt, as he tries to follow in his brother's footsteps. Stifler Sr. has started a successful business by making 'girls gone wild' videos, and Matt is eager to join the 'family business'. After one of Matt's pranks on the school band goes wrong, he is sent to the guidance counsellor (who turns out to be a familiar face). Matt is punished and sent to Band Camp, the ultimate breeding ground for dorks and geeks.
Despite being upset about his punishment, Matt sees the opportunity to make his own video, filming the 'wild girls' at band camp. He brings a tonne of cameras and recording devices with him and heads for Band Camp in the hope of getting his older brother's attention and gaining employment in 'Stiffmeister Productions'.
American Pie 4 is not as bad as everybody predicted it would be. The cast lacks the charm, wit and chemistry of the original film's cast but they are still fun to watch. I say this in every one of my American Pie reviews, but it's hard not to acknowledge him: Eugene Levy once again provides the biggest laughs. In this film he plays the Band Camp's counsellor, and ultimately saves the film from being a disaster.
American Pie 4 has all of the usual sexual innuendo and nudity, as well as the numerous clichés in the plot. However, it is still an interesting film to watch and is recommended for any fans of the original. Just don't expect the same quality of comedy.
