Kudrow's 'Comeback' Canceled

22 September 2005 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Former Friends star Lisa Kudrow is disappointed after learning cable network HBO has canceled her comedy series The Comeback. After Friends ended last year, Kudrow signed a deal with HBO to write, executive produce and stars in the mockumentary comedy about former sitcom star Valerie Cherish, who is desperately trying to revive her career. Although HBO ordered 13 episodes of The Comeback, the show only managed to gain 1.5 million viewers and received mix reviews. A publicist for HBO confirms, "(Co-creator) Michael Patrick King and Lisa Kudrow developed a uniquely original series. However, we looked at our schedule, and, given our future commitments, we felt we would not be able to give the show the support it needed." »

'Six Feet' rises again to Sunday slot

27 June 2005 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

HBO has beat a hasty retreat on its new Monday programming strategy, moving Six Feet Under back to Sundays beginning July 10. The premium channel decided to open a second night of original programming for the fifth and final season of Six Feet Under, which premiered June 6. But HBO has seen underwhelming ratings on both Monday and Sunday, where hopes are that the 9-10 p.m. pairing of Entourage and The Comeback will perk up by moving to 10-11 p.m. -- with Six Feet Under as their lead-in at 9. An HBO spokesman indicated that the schedule shift was motivated by research findings. »

CBS' Tony Awards not in rhythm

6 June 2005 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Even a Broadway smash like Spamalot couldn't reverse the falling rating fortunes of the Tony Awards. After hitting all-time lows in total viewers and adults 18-49 last year, CBS' Sunday broadcast of the 59th annual Tony Awards drew 6.6 million viewers and a 1.5 rating/4 share among adults 18-49, according to preliminary Nielsen Media Research data. In total viewers, that was barely up from last year's 6.5 million viewers (up 2%), while among adults 18-49, the award show hit a new all-time low with a 1.4/4 (down from last year's 1.5/4) The Tonys faced less competition this time around from the second-season premiere of HBO's Entourage and the debut of Lisa Kudrow's new comedy The Comeback and original episodes of the animated comedies Family Guy and American Dad on Fox. Last year, the Broadway award broadcast ran against the season finale of The Sopranos and the NBA Finals. Fox and ABC shared the top spot among adults 18-49 on an overall slow, repeat-ridden Sunday night with a 2.6 rating/8 share, while NBC drew the largest audience (8 million). Fox's Family Guy (7.2 million, 3.7/10) was the highest-rated program for the night among adults 18-49. »

Bergman thickens plot at Storyline

8 April 2005 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Royce Bergman has been tapped as head of TV development and production for Craig Zadan and Neil Meron's Storyline Entertainment. In his new position, Bergman will spearhead Storyline's plan to ramp up series development next season and will oversee the company's successful longform TV business. Bergman replaces Dave Mace, who recently joined the new gay-themed cable channel Logo as vp original programming (HR 3/15). Bergman most recently served as an associate producer on HBO's comedy series project The Comeback, starring Lisa Kudrow. He also worked in production on the final two seasons of HBO's Sex and the City. "Royce brings us very special and unique skills, coming from a background of having worked on 'Sex and the City, ' " Zadan said. "We really feel like he's bringing fresh eyes to the table, and that's what we need in an ever-changing world where (buyers) are open to developing shows very differently than they have in the past." Royce began his career in the Endeavor Agency's television department under partner Ari Emanuel and Ari Greenburg. »

HBO's Albrecht has comeback for critics

14 January 2005 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

HBO chairman and CEO Chris Albrecht took exception with the perception that his channel's programming is overly focused on Hollywood in his opening comments Thursday at the Television Critics Assn. winter press tour. With the Lisa Kudrow showbiz satire Comeback the latest project slated to join a primetime schedule already filled with Hollywood-based series, including Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage and Unscripted, Albrecht said broader themes are being overlooked by television critics who have identified the trend. "I think when there's a strong point of view about an arena or an area that helps us to look through the microscope of the creator and their work and really shed some light on the human condition, those are the things we gravitate toward," he said. "Those are the things similar about the shows on our network. The show business part is completely coincidental." »
