A Royal Night Out review: The Queen in a rom-com? We are not amused

16 hours ago | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Director: Julian Jarrold; Screenwriter: Trevor De Silva; Starring: Sarah Gadon, Bel Powley , Emily Watson, Jack Reynor, Rupert Everett; Running time: 97 mins; Certificate: 12A

Her Majesty the Queen may very well be amused by A Royal Night Out, only because it deviates so far from what might plausibly have happened on Ve night, 1945, when she and Princess Margaret celebrated the end of the war in Europe among the commoners on the streets of London. Director Julian Jarrold makes no bones about the fact-less, fancy-freeness of it all, turning a royal anecdote into a screwball comedy of sorts, but where's the punchline?

Up-and-coming Canadian actress Sarah Gadon is a dead ringer for the future monarch "Lilibet" and she imbues her with the requisite youthful whimsy as she yearns to be among the people on this most special night - before the burden of having to rule over them. But Jarrold (Kinky Boots, »

This man is giving us Payless shoes, basics from H&M and he wears Kim heeled boots," someone wrote. "Fam, Kanye wearing the exact same boots that Rick James was grinding into Eddie Murphy's couch," another added. Meanwhile, someone wrote, "Kanye stepping out like he don't want no hateration holleration In this dancery." Watch: First Trailer For 'A Royal Night Out' Starring Sarah Gadon, Emily Watson, Jack Reynor, And More

A movie that for a long time seemed stuck in development with folks like Dakota Fanning, Juno Temple, Olivia Williams, Paddy Considine, and Jeremy Irvine attached at various points, "A Royal Night Out" eventually rolled in front of cameras with a no less promising ensemble of actors. And the result looks like a pretty frothy little period piece that's a bit of spirited fun. Julian Jarrold ("Kinky Boots," "Becoming Jane," "Red Riding: In the Year of Our Lord 1974") directs Sarah Gadon, Bel Powley, Emily Watson, Rupert Everett, and Jack Reynor in this comedy that takes place just at the close of World War II, and follows the teenage Princess Margaret and the future queen of England, Elizabeth II as they are granted one night from Buckingham Palace to join a celebrating London. And of course, comedic misadventure follows as they step out of the royal world they've always known »

Two Film Veterans Steering Documentary ‘Gotta Dance’ to Broadway

9 February 2015 10:02 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Filmmaker Dori Berinstein and former DreamWorks Animation executive Bill Damaschke have set a Chicago tryout for the musical adaptation of 2008 documentary “Gotta Dance,” with the production bowing late this year ahead of a Broadway run targeted for spring 2016.

Bill Damaschke, who left his post as chief creative office of Dwa in a shakeup last month, was among the lead producers of Broadway’s “Shrek the Musical” during his time at Dwa. He’d also begun work on “Gotta Dance” while he was with the company.

Berinstein, whose documentaries include “Carol Channing: Larger Than Life” and “Marvin Hamlisch: What He Did for Love,” directed and produced the doc “Gotta Dance,” about a senior-citizen dance team learning to dance hip-hop for a performance during a pro basketball game. She’s also been on the producing team of Broadway shows including “Legally Blonde” and “Thoroughly Modern Millie.”

A 'Mrs. Doubtfire' Musical Is Coming

23 January 2015 5:50 AM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, composer Alan Menken, who is probably most famous for working on Disney animated classics "The Little Mermaid," "Aladdin," and "Beauty and the Beast" (in addition to "Little Shop of Horrors," "Enchanted" and the recent, weirdly overlooked television series "Galavant"), admitted that he is turning "Mrs. Doubtfire" into a Broadway musical.

While Menken will be composing the score, David Zippel, who worked with Menken on Disney's "Hercules," will be writing the lyrics and Harvey Fierstein, who was in the movie and is something of a Broadway legend (having written books for "Kinky Boots" and "Newsies," among many others), will be writing the book. Otherwise, Menken was pretty cagey. "It's going very well, it's in its early stages, and that's probably all I can say," Menken told Entertainment Weekly. "We're really enjoying working on it."

The original "Mrs. Doubtfire," released in 1993 by 20th Century Fox, starred Robin Williams and Sally Field. »

As If: 10 year retrospective of the cult Channel 4 teen drama - part 2

Last year, As If celebrated 10 years since it came to an end on Channel 4. Digital Spy looks back on the cult series, speaking to several of the main cast about their memories of the show.

As If: 10 year retrospective of the cult Channel 4 teen drama - part 1

The sad fact with As If, is that it is almost impossible to track down today. The show has never been released on DVD, due to a copyright issue with the music. Without the music, it simply wouldn't be As If.

"Given the choice between no music so we can release the DVD, I'd choose the music," said Caroline Chikezie (Sasha). "They used to say the music was the seventh cast member, it was so important. It just took it to a whole new level. I guess it's worth not having a DVD release just to keep the music."

To: Rick Miramontez

Subject: From Harvey Weinstein

Dear Rick,

Thank you so much for the beautiful flowers. I totally understand, there is a lot of pressure out there. You are a terrific guy, but the world of Broadway is tough. I personally will miss you — you are courageous and smart and definitely impressed me.

All my best,

Harvey

With that e-mail, Harvey Weinstein and Finding Neverland executive producer Victoria Parker ended their relationship with veteran Broadway press agent Rick Miramontez. Until Tuesday, Miramontez and Weinstein were joined at the hip in navigating the new musical through more than two years of heavy rewrites, two tryouts, cast changes and a run-up to the show’s March 15 first preview at the Nederlander-owned Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. 'Guardians of the Galaxy' leads Makeup and Hairstylists Guild nominations

8 January 2015 9:51 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

This is the second year for the Makeup and Hairstylists Guild joining the awards game, and they've been a welcome addition to the circuit. They spread their nods thin across a number of categories, but it's a good window into what this branch digs, for sure. This year, the only two films on the Academy's bake-off list of finalists that didn't garner any recognition were "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Noah." Meaning "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Maleficent" and "The Theory of Everything" were each represented in one form or another. Meanwhile, "Guardians of the Galaxy" led with the most mentions at three, while "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods" each got a pair. As previously announced, Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker and Emmy-nominated hair stylist Kathryn Blondell will receive the Guild's Lifetime Achievement Awards.
