Sex & Nudity

  • A girl is shown in her underclothes, but not in a sexual way.
  • A man is surrounded by a couple of scantily clad women, but they are not focused upon.
  • In the second episode there is a possible mild reference. A group of men are asked by a girl If they are slave traders. One of them responds, "Yeah, you could say that" and he laughs. This possibly refers to human se trafficking. The men are not actually seen in this act, it is only referred to very briefly.

Violence & Gore

  • Violence and death is surprisingly infrequent. In fact, about half of the episodes don't have any violence in them at all. Those that do, usually keep it brief. However, when violence is present, the show doesn't shy away from showing blood or injury detail, but it's still short of being excessive or gory.
  • The aforementioned colosseum episodes are surprisingly mild, as there's almost no blood and few people die. This is partially due to the fact that the protagonist refuses to kill her opponents and spares their lives.
  • Parents must know there are guns in this series, and actual murder is shown using them besides animal hunting.
  • Violence is not central to the plot and is not present in every episode, but there are still a few instances. Kino occasionally gets into fights which result in some violent fights. None of them are graphic, but they tend to be intense and show at least some blood. since the series doesn't always contain these fights, they can be pretty surprising when they do appear.
  • A girl briefly shoots two rabbits for food, some blood is shown.
  • A girl kills three men, some blood is shown.
  • A man is stabbed, he is then shown on the ground in a pool of blood.
  • Two episodes are featured in a colosseum type area, some fights are seen, they are all bloodless up until a woman is shot with very brief blood seen. Later someone shoots a man outside the colosseum, his body is not shown but some blood is seen on the people around him.
  • Images of corpses are seen briefly in a later episode.

Profanity

  • Very infrequent mild language. Occasional use of "oh God". Three uses of "damn". And one use of "bastard" and "ass"

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Sometimes, the story of Kino's Journey can be slightly dark. The occasional violence may frighten or disturb younger children. The themes presented in the show are complex and may not appeal to a younger viewer. This show is very tame in comparison to many anime, or even any TV show currently airing in the U.S.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • In a dystopian society who's citizens are basically brainwashed, a father attempts to punish his daughter for simply questioning the society's rules by killing her with a kitchen knife. Fortunately, this doesn't actually happen and a man sacrifices himself to save her, but it's still an unnerving scene. Probably the darkest scene in the series.
