Irrfan Khan is one of India’s most visible film exports, striking a balance between the glitter of Bollywood and Hollywood. He’s starred in such Indian pics as mistaken-identity romancer “The Lunchbox,” cultural drama “The Namesake” and, most recently, alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone, in road movie “Piku” — which has scored more than 1 billion rupees ($15.6 million) worldwide, and counting. The New York Indian Film Festival (Nyiff), which opens next week on May 4th, will showcase a series of special screenings of Vishal Bhardwaj’s brilliant Shakespeare Trilogy Maqbool, Omkara, and Haider. If that wasn’t cool enough, after each screening there will be a discussion with Bhardwaj, who will not only talk about the film but take the audience on journey of his career in Hindi film and music.

He has played the good guy and the bad guy, but it’s not often that you get to see Irrfan Khan play a romantic lead in a film. But the actor has surprised everyone with Piku and he is glad that director Shoojit Sircar offered him the romantic role opposite Deepika Padukone as their love story is made up of endearing moments and gestures.
Irrfan plays the role of Rana Chaudhary, who runs a cab service in Delhi and that’s how he comes in Piku and her father’s life. Irrfan Khan says that he often spends more money than what he earns when working in Hollywood film projects.
Khan told Hindustan Times: "Whatever I earn in Hollywood gets finished there itself. A number of times, you end up spending extra from your own pocket, but I do it since I know I won't get opportunities to play such nuanced roles anywhere else."
The 48-year-old also spoke about the trend of Indian actors name dropping Hollywood projects to sound more successful in their home market.
"There might be a few actors - in need of some news - who use these roles as a gimmick," he said.
"The collaboration is growing. I feel that now, we will see a lot of people working abroad. »
