To keep up Samantha's continuous aggressiveness and hysterics, Anna Faris continually drank Red Bulls before filming.
It took 4 hours to put the 12-pound "face" on Ryan Reynolds. When Reynolds stepped outside in full fat make-up, a fan of his came up to him and asked if Ryan Reynolds was inside. He said yes and pretended he wasn't himself.
The little girl hockey player that wanted to fight Chris was actually played by a boy.
In the opening scene when Chris is leaving the party on his bike, he paraphrases a line from Bruce Springsteen's "Thunder Road": "It's a town full of losers, and I'm pulling out of here to win."
The movie was shot during winter in Regina and Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan when temperatures would go down as low as -34°C.
This was one of two films Anna Faris and Ryan Reynolds co-starred in. The other film was Waiting. Both films were released in 2005.
Since the movie was filmed in Canada, many of the minor characters (as well as lead actor Ryan Reynolds) are played by Canadians. Three of the supporting actors - "Fred Ewanuick", "Mike O'Brien" and "Cavan Cunningham" were regulars on the Canadian sitcom "Corner Gas".
In one of the photos of Chris from high school, a pennant from director Roger Kumble's alma mater (Northwestern University) can be seen hanging on the wall.
Ashley Scott who played Janice, the nurse Dusty was singing to at the medical center, and star Ryan Reynolds have both played DC Comics superheroes. Scott as Helena Wayne/Huntress in Birds of Prey and Reynolds as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern in The Green Lantern and Deadpool.
