Michael Keaton and J.K. Simmons depart Kong: Skull Island

2 July 2015 2:32 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Bad news for Legendary Pictures’ King Kong feature Kong: Skull Island, with Deadline reporting that both Michael Keaton (Birdman) and J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) have exited the project, with its lengthy shoot leading to scheduling commitments. However, Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers) remains attached.

Kong: Skull Island is set to be directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) from a script by Max Borenstein (Godzilla) and John Gatins (Real Steel). Thought to take place in the 1970s, Skull Island promises “to fully immerse audiences in the mysterious and dangerous home of the iconic ape as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island.”

Despite the departures of Keaton and Simmons, Legendary is still aiming to start principal photography later this year, ahead of a March 10th 2017 release.

Michael Keaton And J.K. Simmons Are No Longer Visiting ‘Kong: Skull Island’

1 July 2015 9:05 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Last fall, two of the biggest awards season narratives swirled around Michael Keaton and J.K. Simmons. The former turned heads with his meta performance in "Birdman," while the latter's absolutely blazing turn in "Whiplash" made it clear the respected character actor was more than worthy of leading man roles. And as follows being embraced by Hollywood, tentpoles came calling, and both actors signed up for "Kong: Skull Island." Ant-man Set Visit: Evangeline Lilly Talks Ambiguity, Script Changes, and More

22 June 2015 9:01 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Evangeline Lilly is no stranger to action roles. She broke through playing Kate Austen on Lost and has gone on to appear in blockbuster films like Real Steel and The Hobbit, and now she’s come over to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the launch of a new superhero origin film, Ant-Man. In the movie, she plays Hank Pym’s daughter, Hope Van Dyne (comic films will recognize that she’s taken the last name of her mother, Janet Van Dyne), which should tell you how the character feels towards her father. Last year, other movie journalists and I got to visit the set of Ant-Man and talk to Lilly about the film. She explained that her role had been beefed up from Edgar Wright’s original script and taken her from a supporting character to one who was on equal footing with Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Scott Lang »

Review: 'Marvel's Agents of Shield' - 'Love in the Time of Hydra': Shield vs. Shield

24 March 2015 7:00 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

A review of tonight's "Agents of Shield" coming up just as soon as it's a little early for Taco Tuesday... "Love in the Time of Hydra" doesn't explain exactly who is funding Real Shield (to the point where they have their own helicarrier, which Coulson's group would kill for), what kind of authority they have within the U.S. government, how neither Coulson nor Talbot seems to know they exist, or any other pesky details. It does, however, explain why this group, led by Edward James Olmos' Robert Gonzales(*), feels the need to have their own group independent of Nick Fury's desires. And it presents them as good guys who just differ on certain philosophical issues from our heroes. That's a change from the Hydra arc introduced in "Winter Soldier," and hero vs. hero conflicts can often be more interesting than hero vs. villain. (There's a reason one »

Wild Card movie review: hardboiled rotten egg

23 March 2015 5:47 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Piles of noirish exposition get the better of Jason Statham in this unpleasantly retrograde crime drama. What happened in Vegas should have stayed there. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): Simon West must be stopped

I have not read the source material

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

I understand why Jason Statham might want to expand his onscreen horizons. I don’t think he has it in him, but I get it. What I don’t get is: Why choose, for such a creative endeavor, this regressive throwback, which would have been unpleasantly backward-looking in the mid 1980s, when William Goldman published the novel it’s based on? (It was first adapted by Goldman himself for film in 1986, starring Burt Reynolds and titled Heat, and it wasn’t met with applause then, either.) Honestly, when I saw that Goldman was credited with the script here, »

Box Office Report: Chappie Has Crappy #1 Opening

8 March 2015 1:53 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

After one of the biggest winters in box office history, audiences unexcited by new releases left the movie theatres empty on one of the poorest March weekends in recent memory. Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi flick Chappie led the weekend with an estimated $13.3 million – mediocre by the genre’s standards and a far haul from the director’s two previous hits. Its opening was 55% lower than his 2013 flick Elysium ($29.8 million) while the Johannesburg-set film made less money in its first three days than District 9 made on its opening day ($14.1 million).

Despite recent news that Blomkamp would help to revitalize the Alien franchise, few were excited about the director’s latest. A muddled marketing campaign that failed to set a tone of whether Chappie was a sci-fi comedy or thriller, mixed with poor reviews, ensured that the genre’s fans hesitated to give this one a shot. Chappie

Written by Neill Blomkamp & Terri Tatchell

Directed by Neill Blomkamp

Mexico | USA, 2015

Oh, Chappie… you magnificent bastard. We love you so!

Writer-director Neill Blomkamp pushes all his chips onto the table with this fascinating sci-fi gamble that dares you not to be entertained. Derivative, ultra-violent, and completely baffling, Chappie also manages to be insightful and sweet at times. This technically-accomplished and thematically-suspect robot melodrama has something for everyone to love (and hate). Mostly, it offers the giddy exhilaration of a movie that’s determined to tell its story, no matter how bat-shit crazy it is.

You didn’t know that you wanted to hear Sigourney Weaver scream, “Destroy that robot!” or that you needed a mash-up of District 9, Short Circuit, RoboCop, and Real Steel about a robot gangbanger who talks and acts like Jar Jar Binks. Luckily, Chappie exists so you can see what you’ve been missing. »
