• Fergie (vocalist Stacy Ferguson of The Black Eyed Peas) was attached to play Stevie Wayne before a last minute conflict prevented her contract from closing.
  
  
• During early development, Julia Stiles expressed interest in the role of Elizabeth. The screenplay was subsequently tailored, the character matured, and the role expanded. When Stiles did not come aboard, Maggie Grace was immediately cast, and the character of Elizabeth was rewritten to be younger and more innocent than in previous drafts.
  
  
• The film was green lit by Revolution Studios before the script was written.

• Selma Blair did almost all of her own stunt work for the film, and spent 12 hours in a water tank (with only short surface breaks) for two straight days to shoot her underwater scenes.
  
  
• Before DeRay Davis auditioned and blew producers away, actors considered for Brett Spooner included Wilmer Valderrama, Eric Christian Olsen, Kenan Thompson, John Cho, Dominic Monaghan and 'Jon Heder (I)'.
  
  
• Tom Welling had three weeks left on "Smallville" (2001) season 4 when he began shooting The Fog (2005). Selma Blair often joked that the director kept two cameras running during his scenes - one for The Fog, and one for Smallville.
  
  
• Selma Blair was the studio's first choice for Stevie Wayne, but she was not offered the part because Julia Stiles was still attached to play Elizabeth. Blair and Stiles had acted together two times previously (in Down to You (2000), and most recently A Guy Thing (2003)). When the role of Elizabeth went to Maggie Grace, Blair was contacted and her contract closed with 48 hours. She started shooting less than two weeks later.

• When Elizabeth finds Father Malone in the cemetery, he is sitting next to a tomb which has been spray-painted with the words "MENE MENE TEKEL EUPHARIN". She asks what it means, and he simply says "It's from the Bible -- it's the "writing on the wall"". The words should read "MENE MENE TEKEL UPHARSIN", and are from the book of Daniel. The story is found in Chapter 5, and the words were originally written by fingers upon the wall of the palace of King of Babylon. Loosely translated, they were a pronouncement of judgment and coming retribution on the unjust King.
