Peter Berg to direct high-minded drug cartel story 'Hunt for El Chapo'

19 November 2014 9:11 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Patrick Radden Keefe's New Yorker story "The Hunt for El Chapo" is a terrifying, bizarre, and occasionally funny look at modern drug trafficking. Delving into the lavish world of Joaquín Guzmán Loera, the leader of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel, Keefe finds a quirky character pulling strings for a murderous bunch who love their Instagram. The DEA manhunt for Loera, that ended this past February, lasted a decade. The best kingpins can live a life of luxury and still avert paramilitary. Loera was the best of the best. Those are the types that get movies made about their lives. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Universal has picked up the rights to "El Chapo," for its "Lone Survivor" director Peter Berg to helm. After that gritty military war film earned more than franchise wannabe "Battleship," the studio is in a position to let Berg do whatever the heck he wants. He’ll »

Peter Berg Takes On The Hunt For El Chapo

19 November 2014 6:36 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Everybody loves a good cinematic man-hunt, and that’s exactly what is on the cards now that Universal has acquired the rights to The Hunt For El Chapo – a New Yorker article written by Patrick Radden Keefe, and published in May 2014. The article looks at the capture of legendary Mexican drug cartel boss, Joaquin Guzman, and is being adapted for the screen by Craig Borten (Dallas Buyers Club), with Peter Berg (The Kingdom, Lone Survivor) now attached to produce and direct.

Joaquin Guzman led the Sinaloa Cartel, and consequently became the most powerful drug kingpin in 2003, when his closest rival was arrested. In 2011, he was named by Forbes Magazine as the 10th richest man in Mexico, and was listed among the most powerful people in the world, having established a drug empire with distribution cells across the Us. These dubious achievements are all the more shocking given that Guzman allegedly »

Tarantino's 'Hateful Eight' Eyes Early 2015 Start and Reeves Targets 'Invisible Woman' after 'Apes 3'

Matt Reeves (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) will look to make The Invisible Woman after Planet of the Apes 3 which is set to hit theaters on July 29, 2016. Reeves told ComingSoon.net, "If I don't make The Invisible Woman right before Planet of the Apes 3, I'll make it right after the next ape film." Naomi Watts was once attached to star in the project, which Reeves has described as "a very intimate character story with a similar tone to 'Let Me In,' a Hitchcockian suspense style. It's an anatomy of this one woman's desperation. You follow her through ever step of what seems like extreme behavior, but at the end you hopefully see why every step was made." Coming Soon Kurt Russell recently suggested Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight might shoot near the beginning of 2015 telling CinemaBlend.com, "There's a Tarantino project called The Hateful Eight »

Deepwater Horizon Movie Finds Potential New Director in All Is Lost Helmer J.C. Chandor

11 July 2014 10:41 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura’s film Deepwater Horizon has been in development for quite some time.  About two years ago, we reported that director Ric Roman Waugh was in talks for the project.  But things never stay the same in Hollywood and, needless to say, at some point during the development process he fell off the project.  The new helmer in talks for the project is All ls Lost writer/director J.C. Chandor. I actually have yet to see All Is Lost, but I hear it’s a total knockout (some people I trust prefer it to the similarly structured Gravity), so on paper this seems like a wise decision.  Lionsgate/Summit and Participant are going to need someone who can craft a taut piece of work without coming across as disrespectful to the lives that were lost (and the environmental damage that ensued) that day.  Hit the jump for more on Deepwater Horizon. »

When Did Jennifer Garner Switch From Ass-Kicker to Maternal Figure?

11 April 2014 11:00 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

When did the switch happen for Jennifer Garner? The actress made her name as a formidable ass-kicker in the television show Alias (as well as films like Elektra and The Kingdom), but somewhere along the way, she turned into the first actress you'd cast as the warm significant other to a strong man who's calling the shots — in other words, the role she's playing opposite Kevin Costner in this weekend's Draft Day. She's become softer and more maternal as she ages; a perception aided, no doubt, by the countless Us Weekly spreads of Garner cavorting with her three children, or all those shots of her standing a supportive half-step behind husband Ben Affleck as he carried out his awards campaign for Argo.In Draft Day, Garner plays Costner's girlfriend, and her big plot point is that she's pregnant. Jennifer Garner, cast as a pregnant woman? You're not exactly shocked, are »

What Is Jason Bateman's Best Movie?

21 March 2014 8:40 AM, PDT | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

Since making his acting debut at age 12 on Little House on the Prairie, Jason Bateman has been primarily known as a TV star. He followed that show with main roles on Silver Spoons, Valerie (aka Valerie's Family and The Hogan Family) and a number of less successful series before resurrecting his career with Arrested Development.  But he's tried a few times to make the leap to the big screen. In the 1980s it was with the disappointing sequel Teen Wolf Too. In the 1990s there was the mediocre football comedy Necessary Roughness. And in the 2000s, he went for supporting roles in stuff as varied as Starsky & Hutch, Hancock, The Break-Up, The Kingdom and Juno. Now, with the new comedy Bad Words, Bateman is on track to finally become a true leading man at the...

Lone Survivor review

Review Ryan Lambie 31 Jan 2014 - 06:56

Mark Wahlberg stars in Peter Berg's war film, Lone Survivor. Here's Ryan's review of an intense and thrilling movie...

If the secret to good storytelling is, to paraphrase an old adage, to put characters up a tree and throw rocks at them, then Lone Survivor succeeds admirably. Based on the true story of four Us Navy SEALs and an Afghanistan mission gone violently awry, it’s an efficient and intense war film from director Peter Berg, who seems more at home here than he did in the more expensive, mainstream territory of Hancock and Battleship.

Led by Mark Wahlberg’s Marcus Luttrell, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch and Ben Foster star as the SEALs, whose attempt to assassinate a Taliban leader from a vantage point on Sawtalo Sar mountain is thwarted by anti-Coalition forces. Outgunned and out of communication with their superiors, the SEALs »

Kyle Chandler Heads To Netflix With A New TV Show

20 January 2014 3:17 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

As the unstoppable locomotive that is Netflix rolls on, popular actor Kyle Chandler is the latest to climb aboard with a brand new TV show from the creators of Damages.

During the past ten years, Chandler has very quietly and very steadily established himself as one of the most sought after actors in Hollywood. Since landing the lead role in Peter Berg’s TV show Friday Night Lights, he has methodically channelled positive reaction to that Emmy-winning performance into small roles in huge movies.

The Kingdom, The Day The Earth Stood Still and Super 8 all featured Chandler in supporting parts, while the Best Picture category of the Academy Awards has included one or more Kyle Chandler films each year for the past two years (Argo, Zero Dark Thirty and The Wolf Of Wall Street). Not bad for the guy from Early Edition.
