The Harvest | Review

Harvest Home: McNaughton’s Return Yields Blighted Crop

Fans of director John McNaughton, known for his gruesome cult classic Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1990), as well as that tawdry neo-noir Wild Things (1998), will be happy to realize he’s returned to filmmaking with The Harvest, his first feature film since 2001. An indie thriller written by first time screenwriter Stephen Lancellotti, it’s headlined by the likes of Michael Shannon and Samantha Morton. While there are several standout moments in the film, it’s constantly marred by an underwhelming screenplay that has a few too many inconsistencies to support the development of tension or believability. The insistent need for extravagant twists undermines the logic of the narrative, something unnecessary here considering the intensity of the performances.

Katherine (Morton) and Richard (Shannon) care for their son Andy (Charlie Tahan) in their isolated home in the countryside. Both working in the medical profession, »

'Ouija 2' Is Happening

19 January 2015 12:28 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Although it didn't fare well with the nation's critics, with just a 7% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, those who enjoyed last fall's Ouija will be getting a sequel, according to producer Bradley Fuller. While conducting an interview with Collider for Project Almanac, the producer confirmed that a Ouija sequel is in development, although he would not confirm any plot or casting details, only that, "Ouija 2 is coming." It isn't know if Bradley Fuller and his producing partner Andrew Form have hired a screenwriter to craft the story at this time.

While Ouija certainly wasn't a critical hit, the thriller did take in $90.6 million worldwide from just a $5 million production budget. Those numbers are similar to another Universal Pictures' low-budget hit, The Purge, which took in $89.3 million from a $3 million budget, and last year's follow-up The Purge: Anarchy, which bested its predecessor with $110 million worldwide from a $9 million budget. What the movies teach us about possession

3 January 2015 4:09 PM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

As Deliver Us From Evil lands on disc in the UK, we look back at key lessons the movies teach us about possession...

The idea of demonic possession goes back thousands of years, to before we had film. Most religions carry their own interpretation of what it means for a person to be 'possessed' by a demon or a spirit and it's a complicated, arcane subject shrouded in mystery and ritual.

The Sumerians, thousands of years before Christ, believed all diseases were caused by 'sickness demons' and had their sorcerers attempt early exorcisms as cures. The Quran talks extensively of Jinn (demons) that can drive people to insanity and may only be expelled via worship. In the Bible, Satan and his demons are very much at large using human beings as vessels for devilish deeds. Jesus casts a whole bunch of them out before he's accused of being demon-possessed himself »
