Comic Book Bites: Coward, Tintin 2, Red 2 and Akira

1 November 2011 7:18 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

For his work on such titles as Captain America and Daredevil, Ed Brubaker has won the Eisner Awards best writer prize for three of the past five years. Add to that the trophy for Best Comic Book Writer at the recent Spike TV Scream Awards.

Now he is adapting his crime-noir graphic novel Coward into a movie for Hunting Lane Films, with David Slade taking the director's chair.

Coward - the first book in the Criminal series by Brubaker and illustrator Sean Phillips - tells the story of Leo, a legendary thief who breaks his own life-saving set of rules when he is lured into a risky heist. On the run from cops and double-crossers, Leo must face the violence he's kept bottled up inside for 20 years.

Brubaker told Variety: "It's a good role for any actor; about a guy who's afraid to do things because of what's inside of him. »

Actors Got Trapped in Plummeting Elevator in New York

29 October 2011 5:05 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

After the New York premiere party of "Janie Jones," director David Rosenthal and actors Josh Charles (Four Brothers, Swat) and Alessandro Nivola (Jurassic Park 3, Face/Off) all stepped into an elevator on the sixteenth floor of the Gramercy Park Hotel. There were a total of twelve people inside the elevator, which stopped a few flights down to pick up more passengers. When the two additional people jumped in, the elevator started to plummet down. The door was still open and they could see the floors rushing by. "I think we fell eight stories before the emergency brake went off," said Rosenthal. "[The last passenger's] is lucky she didn't get killed because her foot was barely inside the door when the elevator dropped." The crowd of fourteen was stuck below the second floor. At first everyone was happy to be alive, but then started to panic as time passed. Eventually Alessandro's brother alerted »

John Singleton In Frame For Tupac Biopic?

18 October 2011 1:00 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

John Singleton blasted his way onto the cinematic landscape with his mightily impressive and rightly lauded debut feature, Boyz N The Hood. But that was a looong time ago and to be blunt, the intervening years have not been kind.

Higher Learning, Shaft, 2 Fast 2 Furious and Four Brothers all had their moments and were each serviceable enough in their own right, but there was none of the searing impact of his first outing.

His latest offering is the Taylor Lautner film, Abduction, which has not been terribly well received by the critical fraternity and there is a danger that Singleton will slip further and further into this sort of unambitious mediocrity.

It should be with some measure of cautious optimism therefore that we greet the news of a new project possibly in Singleton’s pipeline. A Tupac Shakur biopic has been knocking around for a while and was originally going »

Sofia Vergara Spanish Lessons with Elmo on Sesame Street

When it comes to actresses who are qualified to help Elmo give Spanish language lessons on Sesame Street, one may come to mind more quickly than the others. I hope that’s Sofia Vergara for you, because it was for me, and obviously for Sesame Street, too. The Modern Family star knows Elmo personally it looks like if today’s fun video is any proof. Check out the insanity below.

Vergara is gorgeous, but she’s also got fantastic comedic timing. Have you ever seen her on Ellen’s show? How great does her hair look in today’s video? Beware, there are penguins, well one at least, in our clip. There’s also a crazy chicken. Elmo will astound you with his detective skills. What else can you ask for? Are you a Vergara fan? Q&A: Tyrese Gibson on 'Fast Five' and Fast Cars

3 October 2011 5:00 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Tyrese Gibson is a formidable triple threat. The 32-year-old actor-rapper-author worked as a model and MTV VJ before he started putting out albums in 1998; from there he transitioned easily into films, where his chiseled features carved up the scenery in movies like "2 Fast 2 Furious," "Four Brothers," "Flight of the Phoenix," "Waist Deep," "Annapolis" and, more recently, "Death Race" and "Legion." He also starred in all three "Transformers" movies as Usaf Sgt. Robert Epps.

Gibson returned as Roman Pearce for this year's "Fast Five," the hit fourth sequel to "The Fast and the Furious" that arrives on DVD and Blu-ray October 4. We got the fast-moving multi-hyphenate to take five and give us the 411 on his return to the franchise, what he speeds around in off-screen, and what he can tell us about his new book and first album since 2006.

"2 Fast 2 Furious" was back in 2003. After almost eight years, did you ever »

Exclusive: Tyrese Gibson Talks Fast Five

Actor Tyrese Gibson talks Fast Five, shooting this and Transformers: Dark of the Moon at the same time, future projects, his new book and TV show, and much more

When actor Tyrese Gibson signed on to portray Roman Pierce in 2003's 2 Fast 2 Furious, it was only his second movie role after Baby Boy in 2001. Now the actor can't stop working with blockbuster movie roles, a best-selling book ("How To Get Out of Your Own Way"), and a new music album due out next month. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with the talented actor (and unabashed fan of MovieWeb) to discuss Fast Five, which hits the shelves on Blu-ray and DVD October 4. Here's what he had to say below.

After your involvement in the second movie, were you ever approached to appear in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift or Fast & Furious? Can you talk about how you »

DVD & Blu-ray News: Transformers – Dark of the Moon (UK/R2)

30 September 2011 11:25 AM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Paramount Pictures have released details on the UK DVD and Blu-ray release of this summers biggest blockbuster, Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Released in the Us today – an extra-special Friday release no less – the film doesn’t hit UK stores until November 28th 2011. And that will, like the Us release, be a bare-bones affair sans any extras, I hate to say it, but no doubt swiftly released to cash in on the Christmas market. Hopefully there will be a special edition next year for the real Transformers fans out there like myself (and yes, before you ask, I did like the third film).

From the press release:

Spectacular action, stunning visual effects, non-stop thrills and fan-favourite characters including Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and Sam Witwicky rocketed Transformers: Dark of the Moon into the stratosphere, with the latest instalment of the wildly popular Transformers franchise surpassing its predecessors to earn over $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office. »

Director John Singleton Interview for "Abduction!" How He Shaped Taylor Lautner as An Action Star!

22 September 2011 9:55 AM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

I've always wondered how John Singleton would be like in person. He's an intriguing director who started his path with the career-defining "Boyz n the Hood" in 1991. Since then, Singleton has mixed genres directing films like the unnecessary remake "Shaft" or the historical drama "Rosewood."

Singleton even found time to direct the sequel "2 Fast 2 Furious" and the crime drama "Four Brothers."

Now, the director is shaping "Twilight's" Taylor Lautner in his first leading man role in "Abduction." And I finally met Singleton. He's reserved but can be chatty, especially when talking about Lautner, the action star.

In this interview, we talked about:

*** How Lautner lassoed him to be the director of the film

*** Why he thinks the actor is an action star

*** The great cast!

*** The backstory of Lautner's Nathan

*** The two scenes I love the most

*** The biggest challenges in making the film

*** The film is about finding your own self, »

A-List Directors Circling Nwa Biopic

21 September 2011 3:48 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Once upon a time, gangsta rap was new and terrifying. Before starring in family comedies, Ice Cube‘s main vocation was  rapping about scaring the hell out of white people, fucking the police, ripping people off, drugs and murder, all as a founding member of the seminal rap group N.W.A. (Niggaz Wit Attitude, a moniker matched only by Wu-Tang Clan for sheer awesomeness). Now, a solid 20 years after the group split in 1991, we may see a biopic about maybe the most influential rap group to come straight outta Compton, California…just not with the director we thought we’d have.

John Singleton was attached to direct for quite a while, but Vulture brings us the not-so-sad news that Singleton may be out of the running. Ever since his blistering debut film Boyz N The Hood, (which co-starred Cube), Singleton’s career has been wildly uneven – from the slick, brain-dead Hollywood »

John Singleton on Abduction, PG-13 Love Scenes and Turning Twilight's Taylor Lautner Into an Action Hero

Ice Cube Still Planning NWA Biopic

19 September 2011 5:02 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

It's well over a year since Ice Cube announced he was planning to produce a biopic of his erstwhile NWA crew. In the meantime he's turned out for romantic drama New Year's Eve and played the Frank McRae angry captain role in 21 Jump Street. But Cube has continued to develop Straight Outta Compton, and now John Singleton has revealed he's in talks to direct. It's an obvious match of material and a director who previously worked with Cube on the epochal Boyz N the Hood. Since then the likes of Shaft, Four Brothers and 2 Fast 2 Furious have kept him afloat, and he's recently completed the Taylor Lautner vehicle Abduction, from the hot Black List script by Shawn Christensen. His Compton involvement isn't set in stone - "I can't talk too prematurely about it," he told The Playlist - but he does say that "the script is really, really good, so we're figuring it out. »

In the last 10 years, John Singleton has made some unexpected choices, and perhaps as a result, his career has taken some unusual turns. Earlier this morning, I had the pleasure of chatting with Tyrese Gibson about the Blu-ray and DVD release of Fast Five, which hits the shelves October 4. Even before the phenomenal success of Fast Five, Universal Pictures launched plans in mid-April for Fast & Furious 6, hiring Chris Morgan to once again write the script for this sequel (he wrote The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, and Fast Five). Here's what Tyrese Gibson had to say about how he would like to see his character, Roman Pierce, evolve in Fast & Furious 6.

"I just hope that they keep the concept of the heist going. I hope they allow me to be more a part of the decision-making, how we're going to get this mission accomplished, instead of having the mission thrown at us and we become disgruntled about the mission (Laughs).
