Next Factor: Garrett Hedlund

15 December 2010 2:45 PM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Despite roles in high-profile films ‘Troy’ and ‘Four Brothers,’ 26-year-old Garrett Hedlund says he still remains anonymous when walking the streets of L.A.

With a starring role in “Tron: Legacy” and co-starring spot in the upcoming “Country Strong,” Hedlund should prepare himself now for the stalkerazzi and inevitable clusterf**k that will now be his new life.

The Arizona-via-Minnesota native first gained notice as Patroclus, student of Brad Pitt’s Achilles in “Troy” before landing the role of Jack Mercer in John Singleton’s “Four Brothers.”

Hedlund has since graduated from support characters to Sam Flynn, the “Legacy” lead and son of original “Tron” protagonist Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges). “It was great to see that maniacal, young Jeff [Bridges] running around,” Hedlund said about his first time watching the 1982 original, at age 18. ”I so wish I could have hung out with that guy.”

The year 2010 has been a year chock-full of fresh, young (and not so young – we love you, Machete) faces vying to overthrow the Hollywood’s mainstays — and they’re playing to win. Right, Sam Flynn?

Whether it was the youngest billionaire in history taking over the internet (“The Social Network”), kids beating up adults (“Kick-Ass”) or kids beating up each other (“The Karate Kid”), it’s clear this new batch of rising stars is not a group to mess with.

So hide your kids, hide your wives: Here are our picks for 2010′s biggest breakout stars.

21. Brenda Song

Seen In: “The Social Network

NextFactor: Song’s been known for years to younger audiences as the Paris Hilton clone, London Tipton, on Disney’s “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.” But adult audiences will find her hard to forget as the less-than-wholesome/pyromaniacal girlfriend of Andrew Garfield in “The Social Network. »

About a year ago, not many people knew who Garrett Hedlund was. He had solid turns in unremarkable movies like Georgia Rule and Four Brothers. And then Disney cast him as the lead in one of their biggest films of the decade. And pretty soon everyone will know who Garrett Hedlund is. We caught up with the actor as he was still finishing up his Adr for the film and talked a little bit about his involvement in the blockbuster. Meet Joseph Kosinski, the maestro behind "Tron: Legacy," the highly anticipated sequel to 1982's "Tron." This 36-year-old first-time feature filmmaker studied mechanical engineering at Stanford and received his master's degree in architecture at Columbia. Kosinski worked less than a year as a commercial director, yet his campaigns for the Xbox 360 games Gears of War and Halo 3 earned him awards from the Association of Independent Commercial Producers. He was already well versed in all the latest special effects techniques—he got to use the 3-D fusion camera system James Cameron developed—and he assembled people from the automotive industry and the world of architecture to collaborate on this groundbreaking film opening Dec. 17."Tron: Legacy" marks a lot of firsts in cinematic history. It's the first film to integrate a fully digital head and body based upon an existing actor, creating the younger version of Kevin Flynn, Jeff Bridges' character; the »

The Notable Films of 2011: Part One

13 December 2010 7:39 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Back for its third year (see the 2010 edition) and bigger than ever, today kicks off the first in a fifteen-part look at the various cinematic releases hitting the U.S. in 2011. Each 'part' contains brief descriptions and editorial opinion/analysis of varying length covering twenty films. Expect the remaining ones to go up between now and the first major releases in mid-January.

Like all cinematic lists set within a timeframe, there's some overlap. Some films here have already opened worldwide but have yet to hit the U.S., some upcoming films you'd expect to be here aren't because they're either still in development or have already announced 2012 release dates, some were on last year's list but got delayed so have been included again (but with all new analysis).

I confined my list to films that have either set 2011 release dates or had begun/completed production, and only films that have »

Liam Hemsworth Starring in John Singleton's Thriller 'Broken Run'

1 December 2010 9:54 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

With his brother Chris Hemsworth making great strides after a small but pivotal role in Star Trek led him to the title role in Thor, actor Liam Hemsworth still has some work to do in order to catch up. Taking the romantic lead opposite Miley Cyrus in The Last Song helped his starpower a bit, but if he's going to be a star, he'll have to do much more than make out with an actress/pop star. He's on the right track by starring in Chuck Russell's remake of Arabian Nights, and now he's got another project lined up as The Wrap reports Hemsworth is attached to star in Broken Run, a political thriller which John Singleton (Four Brothers, Shaft) is set to direct. The story, set in Washington D.C., follows a recovering alcoholic who becomes addicted to the thrill of stalking strangers and discovers that her new »

Faster (Review)

20 November 2010 9:48 PM, PST | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

George Tillman Jr.’s Faster is a timid rush of adrenaline. A slow brew of Dwayne Johnson exiting his sentence to hop into a muscle car with beautiful orchestrated shots, and a well-controlled, well-esteemed attempt to capture the ferocious steam omitted from Johnson’s take of a Clint Eastwood man-with-no-name type.

The film is an exact take-off of a Western. With much of the films of today taking, not only page by page rips from the handbooks of these films, Faster follows the trend greatly. Sergio Leone is felt all throughout the piece, so much that when the three main characters are introduced, they have a credit appear for “Killer” and “Cop.” Much the same way that Leone used for his set up of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. It seems to be a trend these days – urbanized versions of the deserted town with a corrupt lawman theme, »

Synopsis for Taylor Lautner’s Abduction

8 November 2010 3:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Set to hit theaters at some point in 2011, Taylor Lautner’s new thriller, Abduction, is finally making some fresh moves with the release of its officially synopsis.  Yesterday, Collider revealed the synopsis along with the first image for the film but unfortunately they were asked to take it down.

The film, which is directed by John Singleton (Four Brothers, 2 Fast 2 Furious), stars Alfred Molina, Maria Bello, Lily Collins and Sigourney Weaver in supporting roles.

While I am personally not a fan of Lauter, the idea behind the film seems pretty cool and very promising given the supporting cast.  Check out the synopsis below:

What would you do if you found your own picture on a missing persons website?  Teen Nathan Harper (Taylor Lautner) finds himself facing this very dilemma. Setting out to uncover his real identity, Nathan quickly learns his parents are far from who they say they are. When the police, »

Taylor Lautner Gets Tense in First Photo From 'Abduction'

5 November 2010 10:46 PM, PDT | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

A first look at "Abduction" has featured a tense-looking Taylor Lautner. The "Twilight Saga" hunk portrays a teen in dilemma in the upcoming thriller and is featured in the image putting on his brave face, while covering for co-star Lily Collins, who is looking terrified and taking a cover beside him.

This first picture from the movie has come from the 2010 American Film Market (Afm). It was first brought into attention by Collider, which has since been asked to remove the photo by the studio. Still, a look at the image can still be found on other sites.

The 17-year-old actor takes on the role of Nathan Harper, a teen who finds his picture on a missing persons website. Setting out to uncover his real identity, he quickly learns his parents are far from who they say they are. When the police, government agents and shadowy figures start to pursue him, »

Tom Clancy's Without Remorse to Become a Movie

21 October 2010 4:07 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

NY Mag is reporting that "The Shield" creator Shawn Ryan has signed on to adapt Tom Clancy's 1993 best-selling "Without Remorse" for Paramount Pictures. "Star Trek" writers/producers Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci are on board to produce. The book follows one of Clancy's recurring characters, John Kelly (who later assumes the alias of John Clark, and appears in the Jack Ryan novels like "Patriot Games" and "Rainbow Six"), as he seeks revenge against the Baltimore drug ring responsible for the death of his girlfriend. While the book is set in the 1970s during the Vietnam War, insiders tell us there's no definitive plan to make the film a "period" piece. The last time we heard about this project was back in 2006, when John Singleton (Four Brothers) was rumored to direct and Joaquin Phoenix to star. »
