'Deadpool' Set for Another #1 Finish; 'Race', 'Risen' & 'The Witch' Hit Theaters

'Deadpool' Set for Another #1 Finish; 'Race', 'Risen' & 'The Witch' Hit Theaters
Deadpool's monster, $132.4 million three-day opening last weekend was the earliest a movie has ever opened with over $100 million by almost a month. Previously, Alice in Wonderland's $116.1 million opening in the first weekend of March 2010 held that distinction. Prior to that, film's didn't cross the century mark in their opening weekend until the beginning of summer. It certainly is a new era as studios are redefining release patterns every month. This weekend Deadpool doesn't face much competition in the way of new releases and will retain the number one spot handily. The weekend's three new wide releases vying for a spot below Deadpool include Sony's faith-based feature Risen, Focus' Jesse Owens biopic Race and A24's period horror The Witch. Beginning with number one, history shows that when a film opens with over $100 million it tends to drop, on average, around 54.3% in its second weekend. Films that score an "A" CinemaScore or higher,

Getaway – review | Mark Kermode

Familiarity breeds contempt in this derivative auto-chase thriller

Reading on mobile? Click here to watch the trailer

This slice of stripped-down automotive porn from the director of An American Haunting takes the narrative chassis of Nick of Time (we've kidnapped a loved one, now do what we say or she dies), bolts it on to the body of a Fast and the Furious knock-off (muscle cars driving ridiculously and relentlessly fast through crowded streets), and then films it all in the manner of End of Watch (surveillance cameras lending a "gritty" vérité edge to the increasingly daft action). Ethan Hawke is the steering-wheel spinner whose wife has been Taken (another nod) and who must put the pedal to the metal with a wanton disregard for everyone around him, including accidental passenger Selena Gomez. With its smashy-crashy aesthetic and endless scenes of hyperbolic car-nage, Getaway exhausts the viewer's patience long before the finishing line approaches.

Getaway Review

Director: Courtney Solomon.

Starring: Ethan Hawke, Selena Gomez, Jon Voight, Rebecca Budig, Paul Freeman, Bruce Payne.

Certificate: 15.

Running Time: 90 minutes.

Synopsis: Former race car driver Brent Magna (Ethan Hawke) is pitted against the clock when his wife is kidnapped by a mysterious villain. He commandeers a young woman’s car and takes her on a high-speed race against time.

Since his awful directorial debut Dungeons And Dragons, Courtney Solomon has only one directing effort to his name prior to Getaway – the equally woeful horror An American Haunting. Instead, for the majority of his film career he’s chosen to stay in the background, producing independent straight-to-dvd genre sequels in the likes of The Butterfly Effect and Universal Soldier franchises, which perhaps speaks volumes.

Being released at this time of year may seem perfect with its Christmas setting and Getaway feels very much like a ripoff Die Hard entry, without the intricacies and enjoyment.
