Storyline

Set in the present, the four ordinary men in this story find themselves at crossroads in their lives. Karel, Tomas, Milan, and Vinc were once seduced by the possibility of making money in Ostrava's cosmopolitan melting pot. But times are changing - the company has offered their jobs to foreign workers. The friends try to solve their job loss by going into business themselves. But instead of the success they expected, they only sink deeper into debt and go through a number of unpleasant events that testify to their inexperience and naivety. Even their private lives become complicated. Personal crises and an inability to adapt to new conditions are the hallmarks of life in the real world, an environment scarred by existential uncertainty in a once rich industrial city... technically outstanding and sometimes tragic testimony about life in Ostrava
18 June 2006 | by (Czech Republic) – See all my reviews

There are many positives on this movie, otherwise seen only rarely in Czech or Slovak movie production. I am mainly speaking about how masterfully the "Sun State" is handled from a technical point of view. Movies from around here can seldom boast such an action-packed direction of photography, dynamic editing, cool music, let alone a combination of all of these. Moreover, most of the characters and dialogues seem actually really "real". However, as realistic and down-to-earth the script might be, I was kind of bored by the series of extremely unfortunate events, that has befallen our "labour class heroes". Everything that can get screwed, gets screwed in the worst possible way, which, in my opinion, harms the otherwise highly realistic tone of the narrative.
