As a history teacher, I was thrilled to see that this film talked about something that is seldom talked about concerning the US Civil War. While many in the South saw this war as a war to preserve slavery, very few Northerners cared at all about the plight of Black slaves. In essence, they were not fighting to free anyone and it was only later in the war that the government changed its goals to include freeing slaves. So, the fact that this short film shows so much distrust and hatred of Black soldiers is pretty accurate historically speaking.
The film is set just after one of the battles in the war. The Union (Northern) soldiers are routed and flee the field. Three men (one Black, two White) meet and band together--even though one of them absolutely hates the Black man and the sergeant isn't exactly thrilled with the presence of the Black soldier either. Eventually, the degenerate to bickering--resulting in a tragedy.
Overall, a very good film that I have only one reservation about, and that is the epilogue. While up until then the film had been very good, the clothing worn in the epilogue was completely inaccurate and looked like 21st century clothing. Perhaps this was intended, but it didn't seem to fit the rest of the short movie. Still, it can be overlooked--particularly since this is a production by newcomers in the film business.
