High score for Activision in latest quarter

NEW YORK -- Video game firm Activision Inc. on Monday posted fiscal third-quarter earnings that blew past the company's own raised expectations and the most optimistic analyst estimates on strong holiday sales trends across its franchises. Such games as Call of Duty: Finest Hour, Tony Hawk's Underground 2 and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events were among the quarter's best sellers, and management said business trends in the last two weeks of December in particular were stronger than anticipated. The better results also were driven by continued international expansion. "We have been benefiting from the consistent introduction of very high-quality games," Activision chairman and CEO Robert Kotick said in a telephone interview, predicting that his firm will keep growing. "In fiscal 2006, we will have the strongest game-release slate in our history." »
