Storyline

This is a story of a music prodigy. Lyla is a renowned and beautiful cellist and Louis is a guitar player and vocalist at a club. Lyla and Louis fall in love once they meet each other following the music. Since they have different lives, they have to separate without seeing each other again. However, Lyla has had their baby - Evan, a prodigy born to music. Lyla has an accident and bears the baby but Lyla's father gives the baby to an orphanage without telling her, for fear of affecting her career. After that, both Louis and Lyla give up their music careers. Eleven years later, poor little Evan believes that his parents are waiting for him and goes to New York to find them. In New York, his musical gift leads him to success but also gives him some trouble. A monger uses Evan to make money and prevents him from achieving success. He escapes and runs into a church and people there are surprised by his gift and send him to the best music school, Juilliard. There he receives an education ... Written by Dennis

Trivia

Evan's hurried and disorganized writing of sheet music closely parallels the working style of Gioachino Rossini, best known for "William Tell" and "The Thieving Magpie", who is known to have written pieces mere hours before they were to be performed. See more »

Goofs

Evan (August) goes missing in February of 2006 (according to the missing poster), and mentions to Louis that he has been playing for six months. This isn't clear whether he means only his time at Juilliard, or the time up to and including his time at the school. It is possible to have him missing in February, be on the streets, study at Juilliard, and have the spring concert in Central Park, depending on how long August was on the streets. This is borne out by a scene (while August was in Julliard) of Louis sitting in the park in the snow; August must have entered Juilliard in the fall, and had his concert in the spring. See more »

Quotes

Richard Jeffries: Why is it so important that you want him now?
Lyla Novacek: I've ALWAYS wanted him!
Lyla Novacek: [in tears] I've waited eleven years, two months, and fifteen days just to find out that he's alive!
[Jeffries stares at Lyla]
Lyla Novacek: [she chuckles a little] I've been counting.

"August Rush" touched something buried deep inside my soul seventy six years ago.
9 December 2007 | by (Puerto Rico) – See all my reviews

This movie "August Rush" really touched my soul. I was an orphan and identified with this child's yearning and searching for his parents. Near the end of the movie, I started to cry like a baby. "August Rush" touched something tender buried deep inside my soul seventy-six years ago.

My father was killed in a car accident three days before I would have celebrated my third birthday. My father was also Irish and looked a lot like August Rush's father. It was during the Great Depression and my mother gave me up to the county's foster care agency.

I am now seventy-nine years of age. How I yearned down through the years for my parents, especially my Irish father. My mother was French. I met her many years later in New York City when I was in my early twenties. She was cold and rejecting towards me. I could not understand why. I was abandoned a second time by one of my parents.

The movie "August Rush" was healing to my soul wounded since early childhood;and again, in my early twenties. I knew where he was coming from as he longed for his parents. Instead of music, I used my talent of writing to deal with the lost of my parents.

"August Rush" made me fantasize during the movie that my yearning and searching for my parents were like this remarkable child.
