Chinese point of view
20 February 2007 | by (China) – See all my reviews

I flatter myself to be an expert in this movie, for I live in china. Actually,I don't believe this either. Especially the end,it's kinda ridiculous.I can hardly convince myself to believe this.At least,I never heard of "lesbian" when I was a little girl.Although there are always gays,in history books,in some classical works. But Chinese people really have little understanding of homosexuality.Even the heroines in the movie do have some impulsive emotion to each other, they probably could never find what is that.Even if they know they are lesbians, they probably don't know what to do about this~I mean~sex. So,I found the "maidenhead" scene unrealistic.ANAN is a girl that grew up in a limited arboretum,I don't think she would know how to make love with a man without seeing any erotic movies or being taught by anyone, much lesser with another woman, especially in 80s' china.People are traditional and don't feel comfortable to express their passion directly at that time, even between relatives.Orelse it would be against the centuries-old culture. In 1980s,Gay theme is not only a taboo in China, but also a theme that neglected by the majority. It seems that people never want to talk about this, they probably think gays don't exist as long as no one talk about this.Once they hear about that one of their neighbours is a gay, they would be panicked and amazingly astonished. That was the truth. But,I don't think they would kill someone who is a lesbian, they would spit to her, swear her, cheat her on something......death penalty is really extravagant anyhow.Chinese people always do mind their own business. They may feel uncomfortable about living in a gay neighbourhood, but they really would not do anything to "correct" the others' life style. At present, people's attitudes towards gays are much more tolerant in China.Amazingly, more and more people really think that they are gay. I think the movie is used as a tool to make more and more people to accept lesbian love. From this aspect,I appreciate what the director has done.Anyhow, the movie is fairly unrealistic. That's why I gave it 7 points. By the way,the actresses are wordless, that's good.
