For the song "Dil Ki Baat" R.D.Burman got inspiration from a unknown source. Possibly at Latin tune. The same tune was used in the film "Dil Tujhko Diya" The tune was recreated during the scene when Kumar Gaurav is training with Amrish Puri.
Vijayta Pandit was signed for the film but later dropped once she broke up with Kumar Gaurav.
Shabana Azmi had originally been signed to play the role of Kumar Gaurav's sister. She was at her busiest best during 82-83 in art, commercial and middle road cinema, and opted out citing date issues. Ranjeeta replaced her though she was way too young to be cast opposite a 45 year old Karnad.
At one point Rati Agnihothri was in the running for the lead role. But the producer Tony Juneja saw Rati on the sets of their other film Ek Aur Sikander , playing the role of a mature doctor. He felt she would look older than Gaurav. Later on he regretted his of not signing her.
