Elizabeth Masterson, a dedicated doctor in San Francisco, had almost no time for anything. When her sister with two kids set her up on a date, she gets into a tragic car crash and goes into a coma. Meanwhile, a landscape architect named David Abbott moves to San Francisco and, coincidentally, into Elizabeth's apartment for rent. While at the apartment, Elizabeth's spirit haunts him. She doesn't remember who she is, who her family is or what she did - All that she remembered was her apartment and where everything was. To settle the arguments, David agrees to figure out who Elizabeth really is. When they get close to figuring out who she is, they eventually find love with one another and as they finally know who she really is, they learn that fate really has put them both together. During some scenes and rehearsals, Director Mark Waters had Mark Ruffalo wear an earpiece to receive his lines from Reese Witherspoon, who was not on the set, replicating the situation depicted in the film, where David has to relay Elizabeth's messages to the others who cannot see or hear her. When David and Elizabeth are sitting together and she's revealing she doesn't want to waste what could be her final night, a large light box is visible hanging outside the window behind them and as the scene plays out, the fixture gives off harsh daylight, during a night scene. See more »
I rated this movie a nine because I feel that it has really accomplished what movies like this should accomplish. It IS a chic flick, and it is not going to be nominated for any academy awards, but it is has a very solid story with a great cast and great chemistry. Unbelievable as it may be, the story is one that should be told, and was told well.
This is a movie that everyone can enjoy from beginning to end. It is entertaining, genuine, and original, bringing a fresh and worthwhile love story to life in a way that many others have tried and failed.
I would compare this movie more to films like 50 First Dates and A Walk to Remember than I would others such as Maid in Manhattan or Wedding Date...
