Voltron Movie Revving Up

20 July 2009 11:06 PM, PDT | From TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news

The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Biz Blog is reporting the live-action Voltron movie which has failed to get off the ground for several years might be back on the tracks. Charles Roven, Richard Suckle and Steve Alexander of Atlas Entertainment, the producing trio behind The International and Get Smart, have acquired the rights to the project with the full intent of moving it towards production. They've brought on board Wanted producer Jason Netter and Ted Koplar to help produce Voltron. Voltron aired in the Us as a cartoon in 1984 and 1985 but never fully reached its potential and was cancelled. Since then, the story about five robotic lions with human pilots who combine to form a massive robot has become a part of pop culture and maintained a strong following. There's no word on whether the Justin Marks Voltron script floating around will be used for the film or if a completely new premise will exist.

Voltron flick given new boost

20 July 2009 11:58 AM, PDT | From Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news

It's been languishing in development hell but today the proposed live-action Voltron movie got a recharge of creative energy as a new group of producers came onboard to try and make the movie a reality. The producers are Charles Roven (The Dark Knight), Richard Suckle and Steve Alexander (Get Smart), Jason Netter (Wanted) and Ted Koplar and are hoping to do what the movie's former producer, Mark Gordon, couldn't. Maybe the staggering success of the Transformers sequel has something to do with the new surge of interest in Voltron.

Gordon had been trying to develop Voltron for several years and got a screenplay written by Justin Marks (Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li) but no financiers were willing to step up and fund the expensive project. But that was before Transformers and Hollywood discovering what Japanese people have known for decades: that giant fighting robots are very much in style and

Voltron Movie Back on Track

20 July 2009 10:45 AM, PDT | From FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news

It's been a while since we've heard anything about the live action Voltron feature film, which was originally being set up over at New Line in the months leading up to the release of Michael Bay's Transformers. Last summer [1] there was speculation that Queer Eye for the Straight Guy director Max Makowski had been chosen to direct from a script by the "legendary" Justin Marks, but it was never officially confirmed as far as I know. Now this week it looks like the rights have changed hands and things are moving forward once again. The Risky Biz Blog [2] reports that producers Charles Roven (The Dark Knight, Get Smart), Richard Suckle (The International, Scooby Doo) and Steve Alexander have acquired the rights to Voltron from Mark Gordon Productions and may be looking to set it up at Warner Brothers. It seems inevitable that a Voltron movie will happen, it's just

Voltron Movie Resurrected

19 July 2009 8:58 PM, PDT | From cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news

After the first Transformers movie made a bajillion dollars everyone rushed to snatch up similar 80s cartoon franchises and of course, Voltron was at the top of the list. A script was written by Justin Marks, the movie was ready to go, and then it fell straight into development hell. Now the second Transformers movie had made 10 bajillion dollars and there.s yet another rush to snatch up even more similar 80s cartoon franchises and of course, Voltron is back at the top of the list again. Riskey Biz reports that the producers of Get Smart at Atlas Entertainment have picked the stalled project up from the Mark Gordon Company for development. It.s unclear whether the Justin Marks script which we reviewed here will still be used as a basis for the film. Actually it seems more likely to me that the Transformers cash-in fever will eventually die down,

The Game to Play B.A. Baracus in 'A-Team'?

2 July 2009 2:02 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

Set the bar low enough, and it can only be exceeded. That's how I feel about the upcoming big-screen version of The A-Team, a 80s television series entirely beholden to the staid formula of the day and ripe for reinvention. I didn't hate the series so much as I found it routinely mediocre. My colleague Monika Bartyzel loved the series as a kid, yet still questioned the casting choices that were being entertained: Liam Neeson as Hannibal? Bradley Cooper as Face? Adding fuel to the fire, rapper The Game is being considered to play the role of B.A. Baracus, according to blackfilm.com, which quotes "a very highly reliable source in the entertainment industry."

For me, the only thing that made The A-Team watchable was the bantering between the characters, and the choices so far all indicate that director Joe Carnahan is aiming for a more straightforward action picture,

Regarding Lousy Movies & ‘Snob’ Critics

29 June 2009 8:18 PM, PDT | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

Well. I’ve taken some heat for reviews in the past, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen such… interesting reactions to one of my reviews as I have for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Of course I don’t really care - back in the day it used to bother me when someone flamed me for a movie review, but now I actually get a kick out of it.

Of course I’m not alone - go to any site that gathers up an aggregate of movie critics’ opinions and you’ll see similar numbers when it comes to Transformer 2. The number of positive reviews for the sequel to the highly successful first film is abysmally low:

RottenTomatoes.com: 20%

MetaCritic.org: 35%

TopTenREVIEWS.com: 1.7 out of 4

Even over at IMDb.com, where it’s mainly “regular people” voting for films, it’s only getting 6.7/10 - not bad, but

Columbia Pictures is in Uncharted PS3 waters

26 June 2009 3:02 PM, PDT | From Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news

Columbia Pictures has picked up the film rights to Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, a Sony Computer Entertainment video game released in 2007 for that company PlayStation 3 console. Kyle Ward, who just landed another gamerflick assignment earlier this week by writing the screenplay for Hitman 2, will also pen the adaptation for Uncharted.

Producing are former Marvel Studios president Avi Arad, his brother Ari, Charles Roven (The Dark Knight, Get Smart) and Alex Gartner (Indecent Propsal, Get Smart).

The game is an action-adventure about a treasure hunter who's a modern day descendant of legendary explorer Sir Francis Drake who's after the lost city of El Dorado. Chasing after the hero is another treasure hunter and a journalist. Mysterious mutants, jungle dangers and deadly gunplay follow. Sony sold 1 million copies of the game within three months of its November 2007 launch and many critics gave Uncharted great review scores, comparing the game's production level and storyline to a big-budget Hollywood movie.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune Movie in Development

26 June 2009 6:21 AM, PDT | From FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news

Looks like Sony is bringing another one of their successful video game franchises to the big screen, and in this case, it's one that could potentially make for a solid action/adventure flick. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, developed exclusively for the Playstation 3 by Naughty Dog, is a swashbuckling treasure hunting story in the vein of Indiana Jones focusing on Nathan Drake, a descendant of the explorer Sir Francis Drake, who is in search of the lost treasure of El Dorado. From what I've seen, one of the things that makes the game so good is the dialogue and the voice acting, which is of exceptional quality. These are definitely great characters I'd love to see brought to life by established Hollywood actors. Columbia Pictures has hired Kyle Ward to write the script, who seems to be the next Justin Marks since he is quickly carving out a career doing video game adaptations.

'Proposal' Pops, 'Year One' Lacks Stones

20 June 2009 1:37 PM, PDT | From Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news

The Proposal engaged enough moviegoers to lead the weekend box office and deliver by far the biggest opening of star Sandra Bullock's career. Couple that with strong holds for The Hangover and Up and an okay start for Year One, and overall business rose three percent over the same weekend last year, when Get Smart opened in first. On approximately 4,100 screens at 3,056 sites, The Proposal rang up an estimated $34.1 million, which was on the high end for a romantic comedy and a career best not only for Ms. Bullock (beating the Speed movies adjusted for ticket price inflation) but for co-star Ryan Reynolds (in a leading role) as well. Distributor Walt Disney Pictures' exit polling indicated that 63 percent of moviegoers were ...

Box-Office Oracle: Jun. 12 - Jun. 14, 2009

11 June 2009 4:12 PM, PDT | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

#1 movie predicted correctly: 0 Weeks in a Row 1. Up In a photo finish, I ended up losing last weekend as Hangover slipped past Up. So I'm taking Up again, if only to prove I'm stubborn. Estimate: $30.2 million 2. The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 I've put it right smack dab in the middle of John Q and Inside Man (per theater). It's not doing well on Rt, which means it probably won't win the word of mouth battle either. Estimate: $27.7 million 3. The Hangover Simple math is going to get it, even it's a solid film. It's in 550 less theaters (than Up), and people already came out in droves last weekend. So I'm giving it a 40% bleed, which is fantastic, but not enough to win the weekend. Estimate: $27.0 million 4. Land of the Lost A $100m dollar budget, and it's made $24m so far. So no, not ideal. Estimate: $9.0 million 5. Night at the Museum: Battle of

DreamWorks Picks Up The Defenders

7 June 2009 10:22 PM, PDT | From TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news

DreamWorks has acquired The Defenders, a family adventure project conceived by Heroes actor Masi Oka to be produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. D.J. Caruso (Disturbia, Eagle Eye) is in negotiations to direct, and Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) is on board to write the script. The story centers on a group of mostly teenagers from around the world who are involved in a multiplayer video game, each unaware of who they really are behind the cover of their consoles and avatars. They are forced to come together for a real adventure, becoming inadvertent heroes in the process. Oka, who will exec produce, came up with idea while playing MMORPGs -- massively multiplayer online role-playing games. DreamWorks will develop a video game simultaneously with the feature. Oka has honed the concept for the past year, collaborating with Kurtzman and Orci as they worked on Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Forbes 100: On Actresses and "Power"

5 June 2009 10:49 AM, PDT | From FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news

As you may know, the annual Forbes 100 is out. This 'Celebrity 100' list is also referred to as "World's Most Powerful Celebrities". Which... well, I wonder. The list ranks the celebrities based on their media visibility and earning power. Media + income = power. All lists are subjective but it seems strange to assume that visibility equals power. It can but I doubt it automatically does. Is Lindsay Lohan a powerful person because the paparazzi follow her around? If so, what does she hold sway over... legging trends? Can she get movies greenlit? She didn't make the list but it's just an example.

Another funny/strange thing: It only goes to show you that becoming enormously popular at one time in history can keep you on these lists in perpetuity. Witness the staying power of Sandra Bullock and Harrison Ford on lists such as these.

Here are Forbes top movie actresses...

No Surprise: ‘Twilight’ Wins at MTV Movie Awards

1 June 2009 9:08 AM, PDT | From newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news

There are awards shows that mean something, and then there’s the MTV Movie Awards.  The Oscars and the Globes recognize talent, while events like the Teen Choice Awards and the redundant MTV show go for stunts and heartthrobs.

This year was no exception as the predictable ceremony unfolded live yet so obviously scripted.  The only mildly interesting moments were categories that somehow didn’t include Twilight or High School Musical 3.  Even Sacha Baron Cohen’s bare ass swooping in on Eminem looked staged.  Somehow sillier was Zac Efron’s heartfelt acceptance of the golden bucket of popcorn after a half-naked man flew into the theater, or Ashley Tisdale gushing over her “Breakthrough Female Performance” win like it meant something.

Twilight picked up five statues, including “Best Movie” (over The Dark Knight), “Best Kiss,” and “Best Fight.”  Kristen Stewart won “Best Female Performance.”  Robert Pattinson won “Breakthrough Male Performance” (no

Twilight Sweeps The 2009 MTV Movie Awards

1 June 2009 9:04 AM, PDT | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

Maybe I’m just out of touch with today’s youth culture, but as I look over this “winners list” from the 2009 MTV Movie Awards, I can’t help but feel like a crotchety old man who complains about the kids today with their loud music and funny ways of talking. The Twilight Saga wiped the floor with the competition, proving that vampire romance is the current king of pop culture, for better or worse.

In the interest of fairness, Screen Rant presents the complete list of winners from the 2009 MTV Movie Awards. Be wary, though: your head may explode as you read which actors and films lost to Twilight.

Here are the nominees listed by category (winners are highlighted in red). Shout-out to Slash Film for once again compiling an easy list for yours truly to copy and paste:

On top of winning an Oscar, the late Heath Ledger was awarded the best villain trophy at the MTV Movie Awards for his role as the Joker in "The Dark Knight." Although, he didn't win for Best Fight. Ledger beat out another nominee from a comic book movie, Luke Goss (Prince Nuada in "Hellboy II: The Golden Army"), as well as Derek Mears (Friday the 13th), Dwayne Johnson (Get Smart) and Johnathon Schaech (Prom Night). Ledger winning the award comes as no surprise for Goss, who previously revealed: "The late, great Heath Ledger! That's beyond tough competition. It's fun just to be nominated. He did a God-given performance. He will get it. He should win given his performance. I think he's got everyone in his camp. I hope he wins it."
