Public Enemies (Universal) Johnny Depp portrays legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger in co- writer/director Michael Mann’s take on America’s first “Public Enemy Number One.” Like many big studio releases today, Public Enemies has it all: A-list talent before and behind the camera, but lacks a heart or soul that allows its audience to connect with it. Film plays out like a “true crime” TV show with re-enactments of famous events cast with top actors and shot by the best technicians in the business, with little, if any, character or story development to hold it together in between. A real disappointment from one of our finest filmmakers and finest actors. The lone standout: the great character actor Stephen Lang as a hard-eyed lawman who’s seen a lot, but manages to retain a tiny piece of his heart. For a better take on the same subject,

Oscar-talk: Best Actress contenders! Is it too early for Saoirse Ronan to win an Oscar?

There is something to be said about Kate Winslet's acceptance speech at the Academy Awards. After five nominations, Winslet finally won Best Actress! It's really about time. When she mentioned Meryl Streep, I took notice of the generations of actresses in attendance and that both Streep and Winslet belong differently.

This year, will someone from a much younger generation takes home the Oscar? I wonder will it be Saoirse Ronan for The Lovely Bones? Many are probably rooting for Carey Mulligan (An Education) to win and there are also many Oscarwatchers pinning their hopes on the older generation - will it be Dame Helen Mirren for The Last Station or will it be Meryl Streep's year yet again for Julie and Julia?

The Australian actress, who starred with the late Ledger in the drama about drugs, said that they decided to research for the film by talking to heroin users. Cornish told Total Film magazine: "For the first two days, we were sitting around a table, talking about scenes and dialogue with writer and director Neil Armfield. She told Total Film magazine: "For the first two days, we were sitting around a table, talking about scenes and dialogue with writer and director Neil Armfield. Abbie Cornish has made her mark in edgy, unconventional films such "Candy" and "Stop-Loss," but the 27-year-old Aussie is finding 2009 is turning into her biggest year yet. She's already drawing raves for her work in Jane Campion's "Bright Star" (more on that later), but she's currently spending her days playing Sweatpea in Zack Snyder's highly anticipated new epic "Sucker Punch." Cornish jumped on the phone earlier today to discuss "Bright Star," but it was her enthusiasm for "Punch" which was most apparent. Shooting began in Vancouver last month and Cornish says Snyder's latest is "seriously, six films in one

Bright Star
Directed by: Jane Campion
Cast: Abbie Cornish, Ben Whishaw, Paul Schneider
Running Time: 2 hrs
Rating: PG
Release Date: September 25, 2009
Plot: Romantic poet John Keats (Whishaw) meets and falls in love with Fanny Brawne (Cornish). But their love comes under fire from friends and family concerned about their disparity in wealth.
Who’S It For? You don’t have to be a fan of poetry to enjoy this film. But you should enjoy well written, well acted dramas.
Expectations: Advance word has been very positive. I always look forward to Campion films.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Abbie Cornish as Fanny Brawne: Aussie Cornish has been acquiring critical raves over the last few years for films like Candy and Stop-Loss. In Bright Star she plays a fashion obsessed young woman with strong opinions. But when she meets Keats she finds an immense capacity for love. The development of the romance between

We never venture into gossip, but we certainly like to tackle controversies - and while critics and a certain type of movie goers are praising Jane Campion's latest film - Bright Star - and its lead cast, Abbie Cornish (currently ranked #2 at the Top 50 Hitlist) and Ben Whishaw (coincidentally also ranked #2 at the Top 50 Hitlist), Cornish has to endure a certain 'backlash' as a result of a relationship. Unlike Fanny Brawne, who gets to recite poetry and is the heroine in the movie, Cornish is being branded by certain people as a real-life 'villainess'.

MoviesOnline sat down with Ben Whishaw to talk about his new film, Bright Star, directed by Jane Campion. One of the most highly praised films at this year's Cannes Film Festival, Bright Star is a portrait of love and loss between the 19th-century Romantic poet John Keats and the 18-year-old muse-next-door, Fanny Brawne. The film's title comes from a love poem for Brawne, which Keats wrote in the flyleaf of his copy of the works of Shakespeare.

This would be the first time for tMF to dive into uncharted waters and dwell into the Awards season and launch its very own OscarWatch. But we shall focus on what we've been known for - the often unheralded young talents!
In our first OscarWatch: Best Actress Contenders, we put the spotlight on two relatively newcomers- Carey Mulligan and Abbie Cornish. Abbie Cornish, is praised for her role in Jane Campion's Bright Star and we believe she ought to be recognized for her lead performance as Fanny Brawne.
Says Katya Foreman: The 26-year-old Australian actress has received rave reviews for her performance, which is in competition at the Cannes International Film Festival and traces the ill-fated romance between Brawne and her neighbor, the 19th-century poet John Keats (played by Ben Whishaw).
