Conrad Black is a now disgraced Canadian newspaper mogul who had managed to become a member of the House of Lords. He wheeled and dealt his way into ownership of numerous papers in Canada and Great Britain while imposing his unique flavor of conservative politics on the publications. Charming, very eloquent and a walking dictionary of esoteric verbiage, Conrad Black makes a great subject. He is very willing to talk even as his world crumbles around him. The documentary chronicles his downfall from financial improprieties which were discovered as they were filming.
Entertaining, well edited and filled with good interviews, this documentary sustained my interest in a man I was completely unfamiliar with. The weakest point is the filmmaker's insertion of herself in the film in the style of Michael Moore or Nick Broomfield, who is interviewed here. It doesn't really make sense here. The Terry Gilliam inspired animations don't work very well but aren't too intrusive. Good documentary work. Worth watching.
