★★★★☆ Having bagged the Grand Jury Prize for Oldboy in 2003, Park Chan-wook returns to Cannes with a film that has a good chance of winning the Palme d'Or. A masterful adaptation of Sarah Waters' novel Fingersmith, The Handmaiden transplants the action from Victorian England to Korea and Japan, but the sense of Gothic sexual hypocrisy and feminist fightback remains firmly in place. Sookee (Kim Tae-ri) is a Korean artful dodger, a famed pickpocket whose mother was hanged. She lives with a gang of thieves who run a profitable sideline in babies for Japanese adoption.

Following his Hollywood foray Stoker, Park Chan-wook returns to (mostly) home soil for his sumptuous and sensual adaptation of Sarah Waters' Fingersmith. Transposing the novel's setting from Victorian England to 1930s Korea and Japan, when the former was a colony of the latter, The Handmaiden is a deeply engrossing, highly sexual and at times darkly humorous tale of female sexuality brought to life in spectacular fashion. The Handmaiden begins when a conman who goes by Count Fujiwara employs the help of Sook-hee, a lowly pickpocket, to swindle a wealthy, lonely heiress. The plan is for Sook-hee to become the woman's maid and slowly convince her to marry Fujiwara so that he may elope with her and subsequently make away with her fortune. Split into three...

Back in 2003, South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-Wook shocked the world with his impressive thriller Old Boy, a film that put him firmly on the map, and since then he has coninued to delight with the likes of the impressive Lady Vengeance, Thirst and his English language debut Stoker. Old Boy won the Grand Prix here in Cannes in 2013, and Thirst was awarded the Jury prize ten years later. In 2016, Chan-Wook returns with The Handmaiden (Agassi as it is known in its native tongue, and Mademoiselle here in France). Can he make it a hat-trick of gongs in the south of France.

Boasting more tangled plots and bodies than an octopus has tentacles, South Korean auteur Park Chan-wook’s “The Handmaiden” is a bodice-ripper about a pickpocket who poses as a maid to swindle a sequestered heiress. His first Korean-language fiction feature since 2009’s “Thirst,” it’s sybaritic, cruel and luridly mesmerizing.

Freely transposing Welsh novelist Sarah Waters’ Victorian-set romantic thriller “Fingersmith” to 1930s Korea under Japanese colonialism, Park initially takes the tale of calculation, seduction and betrayal to heady narrative heights. Park Chan-wook has often iterated his conviction that vengeance is a topic ripe for infinite cinematic treatments. Following the conclusion of his trilogy dedicated to the subject – Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance – he largely moved on. (Although Stoker did use elements of revenge to drive the narrative along, it didn’t constitute the film’s central preoccupation.) But now he’s back and his thematic ambition is greater than ever. In The Handmaiden, an adaptation of Sarah Waters’ novel Fingersmith, the target of his heroines’ vengeance is none other than the patriarchy. Those familiar with Park’s earlier work will know that he’s hardly the most subtle of filmmakers, and his approach to gender politics here is risible, even self-contradictory. His customary prowess as a stylist and knack for constructing and navigating intricate plots, on the other hand, is once again put to good use. »

Cannes: Is Park Chan-wook Playing Games When He Calls ‘Handmaiden’ Cute?

When the director of “Oldboy” and “Stoker” calls his new movie “cute” it is time to ask whether the Korean maestro has lost his mind or is playing some kind of elaborate parlor game.

The parlor setting would be eminently appropriate for Park Chan-wook’s “The Handmaiden,” which plays this weekend in Cannes’ main competition. The film is an adaptation of sorts of British novelist Sarah Waters’ Victoria era “Fingersmith.” Park has relocated the film both temporarily and geographically, to early 20th century Japanese-occupied Korea, a period of decadence and turmoil.

It had to be a time where the hierarchical society still exists, when wealthy people owned personal servants; and a time where psychiatric hospitals, one of the major settings of the film, existed. 'Handmaiden' heads to Benelux with Cineart

Exclusive: Distribution outfit has picked up Park Chan-Wook’s latest, which is in Competition at Cannes.

Benelux distribution outfit Cineart has taken rights to Cannes Competition entry The Handmaiden (Agassi), directed by South Korean auteur Park Chan-Wook.

The deal was confirmed by Cineart managing director Marc Smit on the eve of Cannes.

The acquisition sees Cineart back in business with a director whose work (including Old Boy) they have released in the past. The new film is adapted from Fingersmith, the novel by Welsh writer Sarah Waters.

Cineart already has multiple other titles in official selection.

These include The Salesman from Asghar Farhadi, The Neon Demon from Nicolas Winding Refn, The Unknown Girl from the Dardennes, Slack Bay by Bruno Dumont, Julieta by Pedro Almodovar (just for the Netherlands), I, Daniel Blake by Ken Loach and American Honey by Andrea Arnold.

While we’ve already received a few trailers for Park Chan-wook‘s The Handmaiden, the best one yet has arrived today. Featuring a rapid, rhythmic pace as we witness a myriad of evocative scenes, it’s a fantastic tease without spoiling much. The story follows a young Korean female pickpocket from the slums who is hired by a charming con man to join an elaborate scam: she becomes the personal servant of a wealthy Japanese heiress and seduces her.

“The film will provide subtle pleasures here and there, because it is a very talkative and charming film with witty lines. It is the most unusual [film] out of my filmography,” Park Chan-wook tells Korea Times.” I chose this piece after Stoker because I was completely taken with the plot. I read the original English novel Fingersmith by Sarah Waters and it was mesmerizing. The characters were so real and the plot had a shocking reversal. »

Three weeks before its world premiere at Cannes, and a week after the first teaser was posted, there's a new, longer trailer for Park Chan-wook's The Handmaiden. While there aren't english subtitles, there is more information to be gleaned as to the story, and more gorgeous imagery to behold. Loosely based on the novel Fingersmith by Sarah Waters, and set in Japanese-occupies Korea of the early 20th century, The Handmaiden stars Kim Tai-ri as a pickpocket from the slums, who is enlisted by a conman (Ha Jung-woo of The Yellow Sea) in an elaborate scheme to rob a wealthy heiress (Kim Min-hee). One of the joys outside of just poring over the fantastic-looking Cannes line-up is the amount of footage and images we get from some of our most-anticipated films of the year. Near the top of the list for what we can’t wait to see is Park Chan-wook‘s follow-up to his English-language debut Stoker, The Handmaiden, which will hopefully be released by the end of the year by Amazon Studios.

Just a few hours after it was officially announced for the Cannes Film Festival's main competition, Cj Entertainment has dropped the first teaser for Park Chan-wook's The Handmaiden. Starring Ha Jung-woo, Kim Min-hee and newcomer Kim Tae-ri, the lush period thriller is set during the Japanese occupation of Korea and is based on Sarah Waters' novel Fingersmith. The Handmaiden is Park's first Korean film since Thirst (2009), and we here at Twitch are dying to see it. The film will bow in Cannes next month with a Korean release to follow in June....

Cannes 2016: critic's take

2016 looks like a good vintage: Screen’s chief critic and reviews editor Fionnuala Halligan dissects this year’s Competition lineup…

Advance word on the Cannes Competition line-up was muted this year, and smoke signals from Paris indicated that the selection was running very close to the line. Thierry Fremaux talked at the launch press conference about “loyalty” and “risk-taking” in the same breath. While these aren’t two words which tend to mix well at Cannes, the festival’s 2016 line-up certainly promises to deliver fresh film-making. “We know the risks we are taking,” said Fremaux.

There’s little doubt that Cannes 2016 looks like a good vintage. Typically of a festival which always surprises, there’s no way to tell if this will be a good, bad, or - worst of all - indifferent mix until we taste. One note we won’t apparently be savouring in the Competition, however, is a sense of France and its relationship »

Amazon Studios Buys Us Rights To Park Chan-wook's The Handmaiden

Amazon Studios has continued to exert itself in the distribution market with its acquisition of the Us rights for The Handmaiden, the new film by Korean director Park Chan-wook. Cj Entertainment sold the Us rights, as well as rights to the film in numerous territories including Australia, Japan, Turkey, France, and Germany, at the European Film Market this past week. Loosely based on the novel Fingersmith by Sarah Waters, The Handmaiden stars Kim Tai-ri as a pickpocket from the slums, who is enlisted by a conman (Ha Jung-woo of The Yellow Sea) in an elaborate scheme to rob a wealthy heiress (Kim Min-hee).
