Natpe: HBO Latin America Launches Direct Distribution Operation for International Markets

Seeking a bigger distribution punch for its high-end lineup, HBO Latin America has launched its own direct international sales and distribution operation, HBO Latin America Licensing, which will present at Natpe its lineup, including some of the most praised and prized high-end TV series from Latin America.

Featuring Intl. Emmy Award winner “Sr. Avila,” “The Bronze Garden,” HBO Latin America’s biggest 2017 ratings hit, and classic “Profugos,” showrun by Pablo Larraín (“Neruda,” “Jackie”), the HBO Miami-based unit is headed by Xavier Aristimuño, HBO Latin America vice-president, licensing. He reports to Francisco Smith, HBO Latin America president of distribution and media development.

Santiago De Compostela, Spain — A higgledy-piggledy maze of cobbled streets, granite-stoned convents and white veranda towns houses, Santiago seems suspended in time. Over June 20-23, it bore witness at Conecta Fiction, an inaugural TV forum, to a revolution: That of scripted TV and nascent Latin America-Europe co-production. HBO Latin America Ramps up Original Content

Faced with a young demographic audience with short attention spans and a growing penchant for TV everywhere, anytime, HBO Latin America is ramping up and revamping its original production in terms of content and length.

The 25-year old premium channel service was the first to introduce original limited series with higher-than-average budgets in the region, starting with “Epitafios” 15 years ago. Since then it has produced more than 500 hours of content, of which more than 300 hours are original productions, and more than 200 are co-productions. It has become a creative hub for some of the best producers in the biz, with powerhouse shingles such as Chile’s Fabula, which produced the action-packed fugitive drama “Profugos,” Mexico’s Argos which made female prison drama “Capadocia”, and Lemon Films of Mexico for the channel’s top-rated “Sr. Avila” where Tony Dalton plays an insurance salesman who moonlights as a hitman.

Latin American TV Titans Team Up for Drama Series Production

Faced with a feeding frenzy for higher-end dramas — punctuated by the Netflix-led OTTs mounting forays into original productions — Latin America’s most prominent players are forging alliances in a bid to cement their hold on a fracturing television market. Such collaborations allow both parties to work with higher budgets, and tap the cachet, expertise and multiplatform distribution channels of their partners.

Among the key players, Mexican TV giant Televisa made an agreement with Sony Pictures Television (Spt) to co-produce “Blue Demon,” a 65-episode TV drama series based on the true-life story of iconic Mexican wrestler Alejandro Munoz Moreno. Now in production, “Blue Demon” will air in Latin America on multiple Televisa platforms, with Spt and Televisa jointly distributing the series across the world.

Shows about tracking down serial killers can make for some exciting television as almost anything can happen and even main characters have a guarantee that they’ll see the end of the season. Epitafios spent its first season tracking down a killer who escaped from a hostage situation and then transitioned to double-twist plot where the protagonist is assigned to investigate crimes she had a hand in (a la Dexter). The first season was so packed with twists, that the second had a lot to live up to, but it never really captures the same gruesome spirit.
