Maggie Gyllenhaal has been justifiably praised for her role as a single mom with a troubled history of drug addiction and petty crime who transitions from prison to parole and tries to reconnect with her daughter, now raised by her brother and sister-in-law (Brad William Henke and Bridget Barkan). Though the film was not widely seen, Gyllenhaal was nominated for a Golden Globe for her discomforting performance as a woman who wants to go straight but still operates on the instincts of a drug addict and thief, and uses sex for affirmation, and she is an underdog favorite for an Oscar nomination. Sam Bottoms, Kate Burton, Giancarlo Esposito, and Danny Trejo co-star and Laurie Collyer writes and directs.
