Set in the rural, often unexplored areas of Acapulco, Pelea de Gallos shows Chava and his wife Dolores enjoying a typical day. Well aware of his wife's disgust at the cock-fighting world, he desperately blends Sirenito with the other chickens to avoid a confrontation with his approaching wife. After a wonderful night of passionate love-making, Chava wakes up to a delicious pot of chicken soup. As he savors his wife's masterpiece, Sirenito's unmistakable leg floats to the soup's surface, and with this unexpected life-threatening tragedy Chava plummets even deeper into the macho society he was so eager to be a part of.Saturnino, an old and senile neighbor with a grudge against Chava, points him in the right but dangerous direction in Chava's desperate attempt to find an exact replacement for Sirenito. User Reviews

I usually look favorably upon most expressionism.

This was a quite enjoyable short. I had heard that 'Pelea De Gallos' had won some awards, but I was still skeptical, foreign films and all. I had no idea of the budget that the crew worked with. For an extremely low budget student short this movie was excellent. I found it to be comical and dramatic with a few action sequences. The story was so well written that it could have been made into a full length feature. I look forward to seeing more Joel Juarez Sanchez films, he is extremely talented. Take the effort to search this film out and watch it with your buddies. It has a contemporary feel to it. There are Quentin Tarantino like sequences. Very high quality film, not choppy or grainy look or feel. Sanchez has taken the best of everyone and incorporated their styles into his own. Very cool.
