Cannes: New Films From Todd Haynes, Sofia Coppola Expected; Will Brad Pitt Return to the Croisette?

22 March 2017 4:02 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Sofia Coppola’s “The Beguiled,” Todd Haynes’ “Wonderstruck,” Bong Joon-ho’s “Okja” with Jake Gyllenhaal, and John Cameron Mitchell’s “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” with Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning are strongly tipped to world premiere as official selections of the 70th edition of Cannes Film Festival.

Although Netflix has acquired films from Cannes in the past (including 2016 Camera d’Or winner “Divines”), “Okja” could be the first project produced by the company to bow in Cannes. “Okja” also attracted the support of Brad Pitt’s Plan B as a producer. Korean stylist Joon-ho’s film “Mother” premiered in Cannes in 2009.

In terms of pedigree and timing, “The Beguiled” couldn’t be better situated. Coppola is a Cannes vet after premiering “The Bling Ring” in 2013 and “Marie Antoinette” in 2006, and Focus plans to release the Civil War-set film June 23 in the U.S. A re-adaptation of Thomas Cullen »

Fifty Shades Darker movie review: where is the fantasy?

14 February 2017 3:13 AM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

MaryAnn’s quick take… Thank god this insult of a movie doesn’t try to fool us into believing that the controlling Christian Grey is appealing. That would be even more horrific… I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): appalled by the popularity of this series

I have read the source material (and I loathe it)

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Happy Valentine’s Day! Feels more like Groundhog Day, though, what with demure idiot Ana Steele jumping right back onto the horrific merry-go-round of her “relationship” with Seattle billionaire Christian Grey. It’s more of the same in Fifty Shades Darker that we saw in the first movie, Fifty Shades of Grey: He does something utterly inappropriate to violate her boundaries as a person, she bites her lip and unconvincingly murmurs “Go away,” he gets even more unpleasantly aggressive, and she gives in to him. »

Colin Farrell Is a Distressed Union Soldier in Trailer for Sofia Coppola's 'The Beguiled'

8 February 2017 5:16 PM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Oscar winner Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) is back with her adaptation of Thomas Cullinan's 1966 novel, The Beguiled.

Coppola's movie, the second film version of the story of a Union soldier (Colin Farrell) who charms his way into a Confederate girls boarding school, reunites the filmmaker with stars Kirsten Dunst — who portrayed the eponymous Marie Antoinette in Coppola's 2006 period drama and 1999's The Virgin Suicides — and Elle Fanning, who starred alongside Stephen Dorff in 2010's Somewhere. Oscar nominee Nicole Kidman also stars as the school's headmaster.

An earlier adaptation of the story was made in 1971 and »

New trailer released for Sofia Coppola's western thriller Beguiled

8 February 2017 12:27 PM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

I'd say I'm a fan of Sofia Coppola. While I can't say I've seen all her films, the ones that I have (like Virgin Suicides, Lost In Translation, and Marie Antoinette) each had singular visions and a unique voice. So I'm always at least curious when her newest films arrive, and her western thriller Beguiled is no exception. Here's the official... Read More »

Coming Distractions: Colin Farrell meets some “vengeful bitches” in the trailer for Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled

8 February 2017 11:23 AM, PST | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

The first trailer for Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled, a remake of the 1971 Don Siegel drama starring Clint Eastwood and Coppola’s first feature film since 2013’s The Bling Ring, has arrived. As expected, it’s thick with sensual atmosphere—we’d expect nothing less from Sofia Coppola—as Elle Fanning suggests that she and the rest of the students at a Southern girls’ boarding school during the Civil War show injured Union soldier Colin Farrell “some real Southern hospitality.” (Sex. She’s talking about sex.) The trailer also appears to be more faithful to the 19th-century period setting than Coppola has been in the past (Marie Antoinette, anyone?) lighting dim nighttime scenes with nothing but candlelight a la Barry Lyndon or The Witch.

The Beguiled co-stars Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst, and opens in select cities on June 23, with an expansion the following week.

Sofia Coppola’s Eagerly Anticipated The Beguiled Gets a Trailer

With a June release date, it looks like The Beguiled is probably going to the Cannes Film Festival in May. Coppola is, I believe, one of the most underrated female auteurs currently working. »

He shot to worldwide fame as Christian Grey in the erotic Fifty Shades of Grey film franchise, but Jamie Dornan admits that he’s not into S&M and wouldn’t get along with his big screen alter-ego.

“He’s not the sort of bloke I’d get along with,” the 34-year-old actor told GQ Australia of his character. “All my mates are easy going and quick to laugh -- I wouldn’t imagine myself sat in a pub with him. I don’t think he would be my type, when it comes to choosing mates.”
