Willie Maxine Perry, the inspiration behind one of the most iconic film characters of the past decade and the mother of Hollywood heavyweight Tyler Perry, has passed away. She was 64 years old.

Tyler Perry announced the news on his Web site Tuesday afternoon, in a message of very few words. "Willie Maxine Perry, February 12, 1945 to December 8, 2009," he wrote in a picture next to himself posing with her on the red carper at the "Madea's Family Reunion" premiere. "Thank you for all your prayers."

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Perry has said in the past that he based his most popular creation — a sassy, gun-toting, endearingly wise old lady named Madea — on his mother. The 40-year-old writer/director/producer has spent the last decade portraying the character in drag and inserting her into such »

Tyler Perry to write and direct a feature film version of "For Colored Girls"

A few months ago I wrote about Jasmine Guy directing a stage version of Ntozake Shange's famous 1976 play For Girls Who Have Committed Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf in Atlanta this summer.

Now Lionsgate has announced a feature film version of the play to be adapted, directed and produced by Tyler Perry.

Tyler Perry plans to tell us about black women's experiences

Yes, that Tyler Perry — the man who made $125 million last year by bringing us movies like Madea Goes to Jail, the latest in his popular franchise of wacky-grandma movies he has written, produced, and starred in.

Because there's nothing funnier than movies starring a black man in a dress — especially to all the talented black actresses who can't get good roles if their names aren't Halle Berry, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, or Beyoncé.

Heder Playing With Buddy Holly

12 August 2009 11:39 PM, PDT | HollywoodNorthReport.com | See recent HollywoodNorthReport.com news »

Actor Jon "Napoleon Dynamite" Heder will star in an adaptation of author Bradley Denton's sci fi novel, Buddy Holly Is Alive and Well on Ganymede, from a screenplay by Robert "Superfad" Rugan, who will also direct. Molly "Diary Of A Mad Black Woman" Mayeux will produce through her Dahlia Street Films alongside producing partner Michael "Trailer Park Of Terror" Hennessy. Brian Bullock of Caspian Pictures will executive produce the project. Premise of the book follows 'Oliver Vale', an average 'geek' whose life changes when singer 'Buddy Holly' appears on every TV channel, declaring Vale is the only one who understands why this occurs, as he is pursued by 'disfigured' aliens. "Years later, we would look back with longing and say that the music had died. We should have known better." Sneak Peek a TV performance of singer Buddy Holly and the Crickets from 1957 »
